Feinstein: Don’t Buy The Sabre-Metricians « CBS Sports Radio

How many different ways can sabermetrics be spelled?

Sam also had one quibble—and it was not about my politics. Or maybe it was: my baseball politics. Early in his career, while dealing with an injury, Sam had worked at STATS, a Chicago-based sabre-metrics group and was an absolute believer in sabre-metrics. I’m not. I found it ridiculous four years ago when the sabre-metrics guys were trying to claim that Mike Trout should win the American League MVP even though Miguel Cabrera had become the first player in 45 years to win the Triple Crown. Trout is a wonderful player and he certainly played better defense than Cabrera and that had to be factored in, but the guy won the TRIPLE CROWN. I didn’t care what his WAR was or what any of the other numbers said.

Fuld, no doubt would have disagreed. He said that the only problem he had with the book was my use of, “old-fashioned,” statistics like home runs, RBI and batting average (I DO take on-base-percentage into account because I think that IS important) to illustrate a player’s value. He was right. I did—and I do.
