The Shelby Miller trade that almost was

Some Arizona Diamondbacks people thought they nearly had Shelby Miller traded last year, and it was potentially a deal that would have bailed them at least partly out of one of the most-criticized trades of the last decade.

Sources say the old regime was in serious talks on a deal that would have sent Miller to the Marlins last summer for multiple young pitchers, with Luis Castillo and Jose Urena main pieces, and Dillon Peters and Austin Brice also believed to have been discussed. Some recall the talk centering on two of those pitchers, and others thought it could have been three or four.

However, the deal Dave Stewart and Co. were working on and appeared to some to be close was nixed by owner Ken Kendrick, according to sources. (Though a team source, without addressing the Kendrick role, says now, “It was never close.”

Diamondbacks’ Shelby Miller opts for elbow surgery, ending season

Shelby Miller’s season is over after the Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander announced Saturday he will have Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow.

Miller, injured last Sunday during his start against the Los Angeles Dodgers, was diagnosed with right elbow inflammation and placed on the 60-day disabled list on April 27. He sought second opinions on his elbow during the week before ultimately deciding on major surgery.

Miller said he hopes to return to throwing next spring.

“It’s the best decision I think we could make,” Miller said before Saturday’s Diamondbacks-Colorado Rockies game.

Shelby Miller leaves with forearm tightness | MLB.com

“These are tough things for me to address,” said D-backs manager Torey Lovullo. “It’s really unfortunate. Shelby’s been throwing the ball extremely well. Numbers aside, you just hate to have something like his pop up. We’re going to be optimistic.”

Miller says he has never experienced this type of issue before, but a forearm injury sometimes is a precursor to elbow problems and ultimately Tommy John (ligament-replacement) surgery.
“Personally, I feel like I’ll probably feel better tomorrow,” Miller said. “I don’t think it’s that big of an issue. I think it’s more just one of those things that flare up when you’re out there. Physically, I don’t think it’s damaging at all. It’s just what it is, a little tight.

“Their plan is just to give me an MRI to see where it’s at. It’s just a safe bet.”
