LEADING OFF: Scherzer returns, Red Sox protest, Gallo out

A look at what’s happening around the majors Thursday:

BACK TO MAX

Nationals ace Max Scherzer is set to start against Colorado after recovering from inflammation under his right shoulder. The 34-year-old right-hander threw a bullpen Monday and felt ready to go.

An All-Star for the seventh straight season, Scherzer is 9-5 with a 2.30 ERA but has not pitched since July 6. He was 7-0 with a 0.87 ERA in his last seven starts.

I don’t know- if he threw the entire bullpen, that’s got to either do damage to his arm, or demonstrate that it is so strong he doesn’t need the time off….

Yankees’ bad luck continues as new injury delays Giancarlo Stanton’s return

For every piece of good news the New York Yankees have received on the injury front this season, it seems they’ve been hit with at least two tough breaks in response.

That was the case again on Wednesday. Shortly after catcher Gary Sanchez was activated from the injured list, manager Aaron Boone revealed that Giancarlo Stanton’s return will be delayed by a new injury.

The Yankees designated hitter has fully healed from the biceps strain that sent him to the injured list on April 1. While that’s encouraging, the bad news is that Stanton’s left shoulder is now sore. The new ailment required a cortisone shot, which guarantees he won’t return on the team’s current road trip.

To make matters worse, there’s a clump of dirt waiting outside Stanton’s house- it claims to be from Pittsburgh….

Cubs give Kris Bryant a day off but maintain he’s in a ‘good place’

No, Kris Bryant is not hurt. His absence from the lineup Saturday afternoon has nothing to do with his left shoulder.

“This was part of the three-day in advance lineups and today was his day,” Joe Maddon said. “That’s it.”

OK, so…story over?

Not quite. Bryant isn’t hurt, but he is slumping and it’s understandable fans go straight to freaking out after the way 2018 went, when the former NL MVP battled the shoulder injury all season that kept him out of the lineup and made him look off at the plate even when he was on the field.

So, he’s at The Newberry, in other words?

Pirates put OF Dickerson on injured list for shoulder strain

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have put outfielder Corey Dickerson on the 10-day injured list because of a strained right shoulder.

The Pirates made the move Thursday and reinstated right-hander Jordan Lyles from the injured list.

Dickerson said the injury didn’t happen on any particular play and instead was something that had built up over time. He will be shut down from throwing for an indefinite amount of time, but will be able to swing and run while rehabilitating his shoulder and is not expected to require surgery.

Is it just me, or is this start to the season more destructive than most?
