How a Baseball-Obsessed Programmer Is Helping Us Live Our Hardball Fantasies | Motherboard

I’ve played a lot of baseball games. This is one of my favorites.

“I haven’t watched a baseball game in years,” said Chris Flora, a tax consultant in Florida who has played OOTP since 2004. “But I read Baseball Prospectus before each season starts, and then I get lost in these Out of the Park universes, thirty or forty seasons in a row, that are always better than the real thing—whatever ‘real’ means.”

Flora compared his experience to that of J. Henry Waugh in Robert Coover’s The Universal Baseball Association, a novel in which the protagonist, who leads a boring life, immerses himself in the dice-based imaginary baseball association he runs. “I guess for some people it’s about the money, they’re identifying with the management or the capitalists or whatever, but for me, once the current players retire, it’s about getting lost in the narrative my mind makes up along the way. It’s always real to me.”

Those who can’t do, “Strat-O-Gize”. - Hoffman Files

From the photo in the article, it’s clear some Strat players fondle bigger dice than others.

Strat-O-Matic: Dungeons & Dragons For The Rotisserie Set

I play Dynasty League Baseball now but played Strat for years. I even made the trek to Glen Head more than once.

League Ownership Compliance in League Recruiting Forum

Although I understand the company’s desire to limit piracy, this is the wrong way to do it. If I used DMB for my sim league, I’d rather switch games than be put in a position of snitching on my league members.

In order to help incentivize leagues to make sure that all of their members own the DMB software, DMB is beginning a new policy to help insure compliance. Actually, this is not new, it was started by “Pat” several years ago.  Here is how it will work.

The League commissioner sends DMB a list of manager names and email addresses for members of their league.  If all members own the DMB game and season software, then DMB will award the winner of the league with a gift certificate in the amount of the cost of the season database being used. League commissioners can send their league information for verification to:  dmb_info@imaginesports.com.

Strat-O-Matic Celebrity Q & A with Ben Bernanke

Question: Do you think playing Strat-O-Matic improved your math skills at all? If so, how?

Ben Bernanke:  Yes. For example, I “reverse engineered” Strat-O-Matic to figure out the relationship between the cards and the players’ statistics.  I also got good at figuring batting averages in my head.
