Alex Cora Laments Demolition of Caguas Criollos P.R. Stadium Post-Maria

Solá Morales, home for nearly seven decades to the Criollos—one of Puerto Rico’s most storied winter league franchise that rostered more than a dozen MLB Hall of Famers—was among the island’s most damaged sports facilities in the wake of devastating Hurricane Maria, to the point where government officials deemed the stadium unusable. The venue turns 70 on Nov. 7. But celebrations and baseball games will instead give way to padlocks and rubble, as dozens of trucks employed by a company have been taking over the site and working to re-establish power lines to affected areas.

Caguas mayor William Miranda Torres announced a few weeks ago that because of the high cost of repairs, the damaged stadium will instead be demolished to make room for housing and commercial developments. A new, smaller stadium will be built on the city’s east side to house the Criollos.

As Companies Lose Tax Deduction for Tickets, Baseball May Pay the Price

One point not mentioned in the article: Much involving the rush for new facilities (in baseball and other sports) in the last few decades has involved trying to increase luxury boxes, and to otherwise appeal to this corporate audience. If they stop buying tickets, does the demand for new facilities decline?

Also as a side-note: I’ve used the print version of the headline rather than the online one- felt it was a lot clearer, and it didn’t violate Betteridge’s Law.

Tyler Graffeo, the president of Interstate Truck Center, generated a lot of business while entertaining clients in luxury suites at Royals baseball and Chiefs football games in Kansas City, Mo., the past three years.

But on Jan. 1, something changed that helped push Graffeo to give up at least one of those suites. Built into the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which went into effect this year, was a provision stripping out the 50 percent deduction for business entertainment expenses from the tax code.

Until this year, the $200,000 spent on the seats in a suite at the Royals’ Kauffman Stadium effectively cost the business $100,000, and a concern like Interstate Truck Center saw the expense as an investment in happy clients. The team, of course, funneled that money toward its profit margin, general expenses and player payroll.

Report: Mariners won’t sign Safeco Field lease unless they get $180 million in taxpayer funds

An understatement, to put it mildly:

In May, the Seattle Mariners proudly announced that they had agreed to terms on a new 25-year lease that would have kept them in Safeco Field through the 2049 season. The team had an ambition vision for the stadium’s place in Seattle.

“We want this ballpark to be our home for the next 100 years. Safeco Field should be to Seattle and to the Mariners what Wrigley Field is to Chicago and the Cubs and Fenway Park is to Boston and the Red Sox,” Mariners chairman and managing partner John Stanton said in a statement at the time.

Apparently, that plan has hit a rather large snag.
