Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-23-2014

Toledo News-Bee, May 23, 1914:

Steve Evans, the comedian of the Brooklyn Feds is unique in his humor. During the baseball trip around the world Steve had fun with a lot of people, some of whom do not know yet what he was doing.

In a London hotel lobby two English gentlemen of the most pronounced type occupied a sofa, earnestly discussing some business or political question. Steve..strolled over…and remarked:

“I beg pardon, gentlemen. Am I intruding upon a private conversation?”

“Not at all, not at all,” one of them politely lied.

“In that event,” remarked Steve calmly, as he arose, “I don’t care to hear it.” And he strolled away.

Retroactive high five, Steve. Well played.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 2-25-2014

Toledo News-Bee, February 25, 1914:

The White Sox and Giants were aboard the Orontes, nearing the equator. Half the party had been summoned on deck to watch the crossing of the line. Joe Benz thought he saw it in the distance, but Steve Evans declared it was high water and the equator was submerged.

An argument arose and the matter was appealed to Umpire Klem.

“Is it in or out at this season?” demanded Steve.

“I cannot make a decision,” replied Klem; “I didn’t see it.”

This has to be apocryphal, right? I bought the story until the umpire said he didn’t see it.
