MLB roundup: A’s win 10th straight

The Oakland Athletics rode three home runs and stellar relief pitching to a 10th consecutive victory Monday afternoon, 8-5 over the visiting Los Angeles Angels.

Jurickson Profar rallied the A’s from an early deficit with a two-run homer, Josh Phegley broke a tie with a solo shot, and Matt Chapman gave his bullpen some breathing room with another solo homer, allowing Oakland to win its fourth straight game to open its nine-game homestand.

Albert Pujols hit his ninth home run of the season for the Angels.

Oakland’s Chris Bassitt (3-1) got the win despite giving up five runs and six hits in five-plus innings. He walked two and struck out three. Blake Treinen worked a one-hit ninth for his 11th save.

Padres set MLB record as no-hitter drought reaches 8,020 games

When the San Diego Padres took the field for the first time on April 8, 1969, no one could have imagined this moment would come.

Yet here we are, 50 years, one month and eight days later, still waiting on the franchise’s first no-hitter.

It wasn’t to be again on Thursday.

Left-hander Eric Lauer couldn’t get anywhere near the elusive finish line. When he allowed a third-inning single to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Adam Frazier, the Padres’ streak without a no-hitter reached 8,020 games.

Somewhere, one can hear Mets fans popping corks- they might not have a better excuse anytime soon….

Surging Cardinals dump slumping Nationals

Adam Wainwright gave up just two runs in 6 1/3 innings and the St. Louis Cardinals used a big fourth inning to beat the Washington Nationals for the second night in a row, prevailing 3-2 on Tuesday in the nation’s capital.

The Cardinals have won nine of their last 10 games while the Nationals have lost eight of 11. Washington is 4-6 in one-run games while St. Louis is 5-3.

Wasn’t Surging Cardinals, Slumping Nationals a major cross-over hit close to twenty years ago?

Dodgers homer in record 33 straight home games, beat Pirates

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cody Bellinger’s one mighty swing of the bat was loaded with historical significance.

Bellinger hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the Dodgers set a major league record with homers in 33 consecutive home games in a 6-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night.

Bellinger’s blast was noteworthy for other reasons, too. He moved into a tie for the major league lead for home runs with the Milwaukee Brewers’ Christian Yelich at 13 and set the major league record for total bases in the months of March-April with 88. He also set a Dodgers’ record for home runs in March-April, moving past Matt Kemp.

Your periodic reminder that home runs are cheaper than they used to be…..

O’ Yeah! Chris Davis Ends Record Hitless Streak, Smacks First Hit Of Season

BOSTON (WJZ) — Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis’ historic streak is finally behind him.  The struggling slugger smacked a two-RBI single off of Red Sox pitcher Rick Porcello in the top of the first inning of Saturday’s game at Fenway Park,  ending a brutal string of 54 hitless at-bats that stretched back to September 14th of last season.

Players in the Orioles dugout gave Davis a rousing ovation after the hit as he stood smiling on first base, and the Boston crowd also gave him a warm reception. To celebrate the moment himself, he even asked to keep the baseball.

Davis had surpassed the record held by former Los Angeles Dodgers utilityman Eugenio Velez (46 ABs) set back in 2011.

It isn’t all sunshine for Davis quite yet though as he now must work to get on base with his bat more frequently, particularly if he wants to win back the support of frustrated Orioles fans. He’s certainly on his way though. Davis led all batters in the game, going 3 for 5, including two doubles, and knocking in four runs. The breakout game lifted his average for the season to .079.

So, how do we celebrate the end of this streak?

Now that Jacob deGrom’s historic streak is over, where does it rank among MLB’s best?

New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom is human after all.

After allowing six runs over four innings in Tuesday’s 14-8 loss to the Minnesota Twins, his historic streak of quality starts came to an abrupt and unceremonious end.

A quality start requires a pitcher to throw at least six innings, while allowing no more than three runs. There’s no wiggle room there either. Four runs, regardless of the innings pitched, or less than six innings, regardless of the run total allowed, does not qualify as a quality start.

With that in mind, deGrom’s streak was a run of consistent brilliance matched by few in MLB history. DeGrom’s streak ends at 26, which equaled the all-time record set by St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer Bob Gibson between the 1967 and 1968 seasons.

A consideration of various streaks in MLB pitching.

Tommy Pham sets Rays record, reaches base in 39th consecutive game

Rays outfielder Tommy Pham set a new Rays record on Wednesday afternoon with a first-inning single against the Rockies. It marked his 39th consecutive game reaching base, dating back to last season. According to Baseball Reference, that broke a tie with Johnny Damon for the Rays record. Damon reached base in 38 consecutive games between May 3 and June 14, 2011.

Pham’s streak began on August 21 last year. Entering Wednesday’s action, he was batting .366/.462/.641 for the duration of the streak with seven home runs, 23 RBI, and eight stolen bases across 142 at-bats. Pham went 2-for-4 in the Rays’ 1-0, 11-inning loss to the Rockies.
