LEADING OFF: Wainwright streak, Snell starts, Freeman out

WRIGHT CALL

After completing its first four-game sweep at Wrigley Field since 1921, NL Central-leading St. Louis sends Adam Wainwright to the mound for the opener of a three-game series at Arizona. The 38-year-old Wainwright is 4-0 in September, allowing one earned run in 27 innings. The 6-foot-7 right-hander pitched seven sparkling innings in a 5-1 victory over Max Scherzer and Washington on Wednesday.

The Cardinals lead Milwaukee by three games for the division, and their magic number is one to eliminate the third-place Cubs from NL Central contention after four straight one-run victories against Chicago over the weekend.

Numerous items to ponder here, should you be interested in doing so….

LEADING OFF: Braves streaking, Harper hurting, Arizona rolls

HOME OF THE BRAVES

Josh Donaldson and the Atlanta Braves have won nine in a row, their best string since 2014. The NL East leaders also have taken 13 straight at SunTrust Park.

Donaldson hit his 36th home run in a 5-4 win over Washington on Saturday night. He has 28 homers since June 11. The Nationals have lost four in a row and lead the NL wild-card race by two games over the Cubs.

Nationals ace Max Scherzer (9-5, 2.60 ERA) tries to end Atlanta’s streaks. He makes his fourth straight start since returning from back trouble — the three-time Cy Young Award winner has no decisions and a 4.66 ERA in his last four outings.

Well, here’s as good a place as any to discuss the current shape of the playoff hunt- how do we expect it will shake out?

LEADING OFF: A’s winning streak on line in suspended game

SO, WHERE WERE WE?

Before their regularly scheduled matchup in Oakland, the Tigers and Athletics will resume a game that was suspended May 19 at Detroit with the A’s leading 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Back then, the A’s were in the middle of putting together their first 10-game winning streak since 2006. But that could get wiped away if Oakland can’t close out the May 19 game against Detroit. If the A’s hang on, the winning streak will go to 11 games. If the Tigers rally to win, Oakland’s streak from that stretch will only be considered a seven-gamer. Center fielder Ramon Laureano is expected to come off the injured list for the A’s and play in the second game.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

Minnesota has a chance to widen its 6½-game lead in the AL Central over Cleveland and perhaps all but salt away the division title when the Indians come to town for a three-game series. Michael Pineda (11-5, 4.11 ERA) pitches the opener for the Twins, back home from an 8-2 road trip. Adam Plutko (6-4, 4.53) goes for Cleveland.

Presumably, this suspended game won’t be over in a few minutes, unlike the last one.

MLB roundup: A’s win 10th straight

The Oakland Athletics rode three home runs and stellar relief pitching to a 10th consecutive victory Monday afternoon, 8-5 over the visiting Los Angeles Angels.

Jurickson Profar rallied the A’s from an early deficit with a two-run homer, Josh Phegley broke a tie with a solo shot, and Matt Chapman gave his bullpen some breathing room with another solo homer, allowing Oakland to win its fourth straight game to open its nine-game homestand.

Albert Pujols hit his ninth home run of the season for the Angels.

Oakland’s Chris Bassitt (3-1) got the win despite giving up five runs and six hits in five-plus innings. He walked two and struck out three. Blake Treinen worked a one-hit ninth for his 11th save.

Padres set MLB record as no-hitter drought reaches 8,020 games

When the San Diego Padres took the field for the first time on April 8, 1969, no one could have imagined this moment would come.

Yet here we are, 50 years, one month and eight days later, still waiting on the franchise’s first no-hitter.

It wasn’t to be again on Thursday.

Left-hander Eric Lauer couldn’t get anywhere near the elusive finish line. When he allowed a third-inning single to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Adam Frazier, the Padres’ streak without a no-hitter reached 8,020 games.

Somewhere, one can hear Mets fans popping corks- they might not have a better excuse anytime soon….

Surging Cardinals dump slumping Nationals

Adam Wainwright gave up just two runs in 6 1/3 innings and the St. Louis Cardinals used a big fourth inning to beat the Washington Nationals for the second night in a row, prevailing 3-2 on Tuesday in the nation’s capital.

The Cardinals have won nine of their last 10 games while the Nationals have lost eight of 11. Washington is 4-6 in one-run games while St. Louis is 5-3.

Wasn’t Surging Cardinals, Slumping Nationals a major cross-over hit close to twenty years ago?

Dodgers homer in record 33 straight home games, beat Pirates

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cody Bellinger’s one mighty swing of the bat was loaded with historical significance.

Bellinger hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the Dodgers set a major league record with homers in 33 consecutive home games in a 6-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night.

Bellinger’s blast was noteworthy for other reasons, too. He moved into a tie for the major league lead for home runs with the Milwaukee Brewers’ Christian Yelich at 13 and set the major league record for total bases in the months of March-April with 88. He also set a Dodgers’ record for home runs in March-April, moving past Matt Kemp.

Your periodic reminder that home runs are cheaper than they used to be…..
