Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-5-2016

Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger, October 5, 1916:

If the baseball magnates, and the National Commission in particular, want to help baseball and restore the confidence of the fans, let them abolish the world’s series.
The mad desire of magnates to have pennant-winning teams in order to get a slice of the world’s series melon does a lot of good for a few teams and satisfies the fans of a few cities, but the fans and players of the teams in seven cities in each league are bitterly disappointed year after year.

This is an excellent idea. Also, let’s stop keeping score.

Townsend (BLS): Report: MLB nearing changes to strike zone and intentional walks

So all this time the four-pitch free pass has been what’s responsible for preventing schoolchildren from seeing the final out of games? Who knew?

As for intentional walks, Stark wrote the following:

“The change in the intentional-walk rule would end the traditional practice of requiring the pitcher to lob four balls outside the strike zone. Instead, a team could signify it wants to issue an intentional walk, and the hitter would be immediately sent to first base, sources said.”

This is a change that’s been talked about and debated for years. On one hand, a purist might argue that the game needs to be played all the way through, because throwing the pitches could lead to a mistake that alters the game. We’ve seen wild pitches on intentional walks before, so it’s a valid point.

Others would then argue that it doesn’t happen nearly enough to matter or justify wasting another 30-60 seconds. Apparently, the competition committee agrees with the latter opinion, thus meaning the intentional walk as we know it will soon be extinct.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-29-2016

Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger, April 29, 1916:

Charles Wagner laid down his tools in the riveting department of the Hale & Kilburn plant and munched an apple. The proximity of the Athletics’ ball park stirred him to action.

“Play ball,” he said to a fellow-workman, Daniel Dougherty, as the latter assumed a Ty Cobbesque pose with a hammer as a bat.

He threw the core of the apple toward Dougherty, who, in attempting to single to right, let the hammer slip from his hands. It struck Wagner in the head, necessitating his removal to the Samaritan Hospital, where he was found to have a fractured skull.

Let that be a lesson to you. Don’t play baseball with an apple and a hammer. It may seem like a good idea, but I assure you it is not.
