Blue Jays Nation: Why Rogers Could Sell the Blue Jays

Buon Natale?

Why do I bring this all up? Because new Rogers CEO Joe Natale has just passed the six month mark on the job, and apparently there are rumblings that the former Telus honcho — who from the beginning was thought to maybe not be enamored with his new company’s diverse array of divisions — might be getting set to move the company’s focus back to its core assets. Or so says a report this week from Andrew Willis of the Globe’s Report on Business…..

We’re later told that “speculation on Rogers’s plans for the Jays and the Cogeco stake has swirled for years. But the arrival of a new CEO with a reputation for a laser focus on wireless and cable operations and the steady drumbeat for asset sales from the analysts has got the hedge-fund crowd sniffing around.”

Such a sale might impact badly the chances of an expansion team in Montréal. But it’s all just the speculation of Denis Healey’s ‘teenage scribblers’ so far.

Dade County Wants Its Cut of Marlins Sale

Accountants: sharpen your pencils!

Loria’s 2008 deal with Miami and Miami-Dade included payout provisions if he sold the team within six years of the 2012 opening of a county-owned ballpark built with more than $400 million in public dollars and about $150 million from the team. The deal requires the Marlins to pay the two governments 5 percent of the proceeds of a sale.

Five years and six months later, the bill may be coming due. But with Loria able to deduct both debt and taxes paid on the sale, it’s not known whether he plans on notifying local governments that they’re entitled to any dollars from the transaction.

Ties to Cuba Enhance and Entangle Jorge Mas’s Marlins Bid

MIAMI — Throughout his life, Jorge Mas Santos has had a passion for Cuba, family, business and sports.

Now, as one of the wealthiest people in Miami and a serious contender to buy the Miami Marlins, Mas may be able to combine his interests in a way that would have an impact on baseball and, perhaps, the larger world of politics.

In Mas — who inherited his family’s business from his father, Jorge Mas Canosa, who died in 1997 — baseball sees a deep-pocketed investor with strong local roots. As a Cuban-American, Mas, 54, would also give Major League Baseball its second owner of Latino background. (Arte Moreno of the Los Angeles Angels is Mexican-American.)

Heyman | Marlins Sale Moving Towards Finish Line

Sources say they still hope there’s a deal for at least a negotiating window by next Tuesday’s All-Star Game. The Jorge Mas group has the financing and is a threat to win the team, while the Tagg Romney-Wayne Rothbaum group is at least close and even the Derek Jeter group, which had been well behind, is said to have come up with close to $1 billion in backers and isn’t completely out of the running, according to a source close to the talks.

Mas is the wealthiest of the interested parties, so that could give him an inside track for the deal for the team, which is expected to come in at close to $1.2 billion, plus cash on hand to fund expected losses in the next couple years (the Marlins are said to be in line to lose as much as $70 million this year).

While there’s no proof any deadline has been set, it certainly seems that MLB believes it’s time for a change of ownership, and folks involved believe there will be more clarity by next Tuesday, or shortly thereafter.
