ShutDownInning/Kelly: Twice: Darvish Flirts with History

Nice detailed analysis of the differences between Yu Darvish at his best and at his worst:

In looking further at his slider, during the two best starts, it was extraordinarily effective. The table below illustrates the effectiveness of his slider during the April 2 and August 12 starts.

Compare that table to the same information from the bad starts on July 6 and September 4, and it becomes clear that when Yu’s slider is off, hitters are jumping on it.

Another interesting difference between the two sets of games shows up in Darvish’s sinker. He threw a sinker just five times during the April 2 start in Houston, and it was very effective. Batters took the bait on 80% of those pitches, and 60% resulted in foul balls. However, in the start against Houston in July, he threw his sinker twenty times, and it was not effective. Of the twenty he threw in July, 65% were called Balls, and batters only swung at 15% of them.  The velocity was about the same in each outing, but the difference in ball movement was dramatic. There was a 4” difference in horizontal movement between the two games, and 4” variance in vertical movement. The sinker he threw in April was not the same sinker he threw in July.
