NYDN: Todd Frazier hopes to talk to Paul O’Neill about wearing No. 21 with Yankees

Still too soon?

The last guy who wore “The Warrior’s” old number got booed.

Now, Todd Frazier wants his shot at wearing Paul O’Neill’s No. 21.

“I was a big Paul O’Neill fan (growing up), that’s why I wear the No. 21,” said Frazier, who also reportedly grew up rooting for the Red Sox at the same time. “Hopefully I can talk to him, and maybe I can get the number before I get home.”

LaTroy Hawkins briefly wore No. 21 in 2008 before getting booed by Yankees fans and switching to No. 22. No. 21 is not retired by the Yankees.

Likely destinations for all the top stars on the block

The Brewers may be the most aggressive team pursuing Gray, who pitched three years for Brewers pitching coach Derek Johnson at Vanderbilt. The Brewers, whose rebuild has suddenly been accelerated by their first-place status in the NL Central, not only have the prospects, but also a fiery owner wanting to land him….

The Astros, 62-30, actually may be the team that most needs Gray. Sure, they’ll cruise to the AL West title with or without him, but with the way the Astros have dominated this year, anything short of a World Series berth will be a disappointment.

The Astros would prefer to land Detroit Tigers All-Star Michael Fulmer, and likely would include No. 1 prospect Francis Martes for him, but they inquired, just like the Cubs, and came up empty. If Fulmer is traded, the Tigers say, it won’t be until this winter when everyone can make a bid.

The Astros realize that Gray is the ideal front-line starter in this market to make a run for their first World Series title in franchise history, giving them a dynamic rotation with All-Stars Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers Jr.

Prediction: Gray goes to the Astros for starter Joe Musgrove, prized pitching prospect Forrest Whitley and outfield prospect Teoscar Hernandez.

Weighing Yankees’ 1st-base trades, which are crucial for Matt Holliday

In theory, they could acquire someone such as Atlanta’s Matt Adams, Texas’ Mike Napoli or Toronto’s Kendrys Morales with the idea that they are the first basemen the rest of this year and then become the DH next year, providing also a better security blanket for Bird, who so far has shown a penchant for both injuries and slow healing. But that would mean not bringing back Matt Holliday, who has proven an asset as both a hitter and a clubhouse sage, particularly for Aaron Judge.

Anyway, some thoughts on which way the Yankees could go:

1. Alonso: Oakland VP of baseball operations Billy Beane is one of Cashman’s best friends, yet they have made one minor trade (involving Jeff Francis) in the past 14 years. Alonso has had a breakout season, and the Yankees could obtain him and use this as a cameo to decide whether they want to sign him long-term — though keep in mind the Yanks have so many prospects coming and, thus, might want to keep the DH spot as a revolving door.

Are Red Sox bidding against themselves for Todd Frazier? | WEEI

I don’t see the Red Sox giving up a really good prospect for him. Their prospect depth isn’t fantastic right now.
