Tom Seaver on how Mets are mishandling their ‘stud muffins’ | New York Post

Stupid fight-winning computer!!

The right-hander with 311 victories over 20 major league seasons and the leader of the world champion 1969 Mets also is keeping a close eye on the pitching renaissance going on at Citi Field. He is doing that the old-fashioned way, looking at box scores every morning.

He loves what he sees of the Mets young staff, which includes All-Star Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard and the injured Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler.

He wants to see one number increase as he looks through those box scores. He thinks it will make the staff better and more capable as a whole.

Seaver wants to see innings increase for these Mets pitchers. Hear him out — this is not just an old-timer saying it was better in his day. He believes the deeper in games these pitchers go, the better they will be and so will the Mets.

“I follow across the game and I am critical,’’ Seaver said. “When I’m looking at the numbers of innings pitched and they’ve taken these guys out too quickly, that’s the worst thing. It is so obvious. The computer has won this fight.

“If you are going to build a stud muffin, you leave him out there. You want to get 100 percent of him, you don’t want to get 80 percent of him. You want to get the guy who charges ahead. I understand you have to protect your money. But you are not taking that athlete to a higher plane, which he deserves. He deserves the opportunity.’’

You don’t leave him on the vine to die, but you do increase his workload.

“It wouldn’t have happened to me that way,’’ Seaver said.
