Holding Separate Elections For Player and Non-Player Candidates Would Greatly Improve the Hall of Fame’s Era Ballot Vote Process

By holding separate elections for players and non-players, the Committee would be able to continue to add candidates who lasted 15 years in BBWAA voting while also having enough room on the ballot for candidates such as Grich, Evans, Hernandez, and Whitaker whose Hall of Fame cases are strengthened by advanced metrics but were too quickly dismissed by BBWAA voters.  In addition, putting the non-players on their own ballot would not only give the Committee space to select a solid candidate like Piniella but could also allow for intriguing non-managerial candidates such as Johnny Sain, Dave Duncan, and Leo Mazzone—each of whom made their mark as pitching coaches—to make their way onto their respective Era ballot.

March Sadness: Understanding the True Cost of the Spring Tommy John Surge

March, more than any other, is the month pitchers fall apart. And while April is the next riskiest, it’s also a distant second, so a team whose staff escapes spring training unscathed has reason to celebrate.

Spring training, formerly dismissed as insignificant in analytical circles, is enjoying a revival in 2015. And now we have strong evidence that March is a make-or-break month for team health, the origin of more than a quarter of the cases of a dreaded type of season-ending surgery. How training staffs handle the transition from winter to spring is only one skirmish in a larger war against injuries, but in some seasons, those skirmishes have a decisive effect on the standings. Mess with March, and you run the risk of being DOA on Opening Day.

Harvey-Fernandez could be historic rivalry in the making | New York Post

So, Fernandez’s timetable is 13-14 months.

Fernandez was due to throw 24 hours later. But only 30 pitches (no breaking stuff) from a bullpen mound. His surgery was May 16. Marlins general manager Dan Jennings mentioned he has never seen anyone in his 28 years in pro ball attack rehab like Fernandez has, and the blueprint has Fernandez back in the majors sometime from mid-June to mid-July.

Keri: The Tommy John Epidemic: What’s Behind the Rapid Increase of Pitchers Undergoing Elbow Surgery?

Dr. Glenn Fleisig has made a career out of examining arm injuries and looking for ways to curb them. The research director at the American Sports Medicine Institute and adviser to Little League, USA Baseball, and Major League Baseball has studied everything from pitch counts to injury rates from youth to pro levels. He and Stan Conte of the Los Angeles Dodgers conducted the study that found how many major and minor leaguers have undergone the procedure. So, after his presentation at the recent MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, I sat down with Fleisig to discuss the Tommy John epidemic, why it’s happening, and what (if anything) can be done about it.
