Baseball union chief says tanking talk damaging sport - HoustonChronicle.com

This is from 2016.

To Clark, who visited Astros camp Friday on his annual tour around spring training, the sustained discussion around tanking is damaging to the sport - regardless of semantics.

“(Tanking is) a nice catchphrase that grabs the headlines, but the truth is as a union, as a part of the industry, we can appreciate as much as anything a club having flexibility to make what decisions it needs to make in order to be successful - we get that,” Clark said. “There are some sensitivities that exist obviously based on how certain clubs function and why and how they use certain revenue sharing dollars.

“All of those things are all wrapped into what we pay attention to as much as the other side (the league) pays attention. But it doesn’t help the industry to have dialogue where the heading, or the headline, says tanking. It doesn’t help the individual club, it doesn’t help the industry as a whole.”

Clark: Some teams make little effort to justify ticket costs

NEW YORK (AP) — Players’ union head Tony Clark took the extraordinary step of saying baseball fans should question whether it makes sense to purchase tickets for some teams, responding to Commissioner Rob Manfred’s assertion that free-agent players have failed to adjust their economic demands in a market upended by analytics.

Top free agents Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, Craig Kimbrel and Dallas Keuchel remain unsigned with spring training under way, creating tension during negotiations on management’s proposals for a pitch clock and new limitations on relief pitchers. The union responded with a wider list of plans that include economic initiatives such as expanding the designated hitter to the National League and altering the amateur draft to make rebuilding less appealing.

“Markets change,” Manfred said Sunday. “We’ve had a lot of change in the game. People think about players differently. They analyze players differently. They negotiate differently.”

Tony Clark, as we all know, is an expert on the subject of things that get a large amount of money that they don’t deserve….

MLB PLAYERS UNION HEAD TONY CLARK BLASTS SLOW FREE AGENCY

For the second consecutive year, prominent free agents remain unsigned with very little time remaining before spring training. And MLBPA head Tony Clark is not happy about it.

Clark ripped the slow process, comparing it to the pace of play arguments that have permeated through baseball in recent years.

When asked if his incompetence had helped to create this situation, Clark said “Look over there!” and ran out a side door.

MLB players concerned about retooling teams, attendance drop

NEW YORK (AP) — Baseball players are concerned the Seattle Mariners have become yet another rebuilding team and may be joined by others following a season of steep attendance drops among clubs that faded early and never contended for the playoffs.

Union head Tony Clark and new collective bargaining director Bruce Meyer said Wednesday their members also are concerned about rapid change in the way games are played, such as the increased use of relief pitchers, and are willing to speak with management this offseason about whether counteracting changes are needed.

Altering the amateur draft to include an NBA-style lottery for the top picks, the 10-day disabled list and the 10-day minimum for the recall of players optioned to the minors are among the topics the union is prepared to talk about as part of a wider discussion. So are possible rules to counter offense-suffocating defensive shifts.

A reminder that a lot of players are as alarmed by tanking as those of us who watch it from the stands….
