Source: Phillies have indeed had trade talks with Marlins regarding J.T. Realmuto

The Phillies have engaged in recent conversations with the Miami Marlins regarding a trade for All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto, a baseball source confirmed. The talks were initially reported by several national outlets on Tuesday.

The Phillies were linked to Realmuto during the winter meetings two months ago. At the time, a member of the Marlins organization said the Phillies didn’t have the prospects to pull off a deal. But after months of trying to move Realmuto for top value, the Marlins’ price tag is believed to have come down and that has put the Phillies in the hunt.

Realmuto turns 28 in March and won’t be a free agent until after the 2020 season. He hit .277 with 30 doubles, 21 homers, 74 RBIs and a .825 OPS for the Marlins last season. Realmuto has seen young stars and former teammates such as Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna get shipped out by the rebuilding Marlins and he is eager to be the next guy to go.

So, what among the Phillies’ collection of magic beans do we suppose Captain Intangibles will accept?

MLB rumors: Red Sox didn’t find Jackie Bradley Jr. trade to their liking

The Boston Red Sox need to figure out which of their upcoming free agents in 2019 and 2020 to pay long-term, and that’s going to create a lot of tough decisions.

The Sox could get ahead of those decisions by trading one or more of their veterans who are up for free agency in the near future. One of those players with free agency on the horizon is outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr., and The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported Saturday that Boston looked at trading the 2018 American League Championship Series MVP but didn’t find a package that made sense.

It appears that talks truly broke down when he refused to talk to management about his Jackpot Wad.

Duane Kuiper: Giants will trade a pitcher but not Madison Bumgarner

It’s been a relatively quiet offseason for Bay Area baseball teams. And unless you’re the Mets or Mariners, you more than likely had a still offseason as well.

But as far as the Giants go, the question remains whether or not the team will trade Madison Bumgarner.

Well, despite multiple reports that this unicorn of a trade may not happen, the discussion has never gone away—especially for Duane Kuiper. In an interview with KNBR on Wednesday, the Giants broadcaster said he believes MadBum isn’t the pitcher that will be dealt away.

Why Madison Bumgarner trade now seems more likely at July deadline

LAS VEGAS — When the Giants arrived here on Sunday, Madison Bumgarner was their Opening Day starter. After four days of circulated casino air, room service, $7 cups of coffee, a few rumors and one minor transaction, Madison Bumgarner is still their Opening Day starter.

That still could change, though.

While the Giants are not close to any deals and have not gotten close, multiple sources familiar with their discussions said this week that the front office is still fully ready to trade the franchise’s ace if the right deal comes along. The Giants have come to grips with the reality of making such a move, but also believe at this point that if they are to trade Bumgarner, the best deal likely will come before the July 31 trade deadline.

An interesting point to ponder, especially as it ties so heavily with both how the Giants view themselves and how the paths they can take could lead them to very different trajectories.

Pros and Cons: Should the Mets trade for Yasiel Puig?

The Mets are looking for an outfielder to pair with Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo. As they search, Yasiel Puig is reportedly “disgruntled” in Los Angeles and could get traded during the Winter Meetings that kick off Sunday in Las Vegas.

Mind you, is Yasiel Puig ever really gruntled?

MLB rumors: Giants’ Madison Bumgarner not ‘going anywhere’ in trade

It seems more and more likely that the Giants will not trade Madison Bumgarner. At least not right now.

On Friday, a Giants source told Fancred’s Jon Heyman that the writer shouldn’t expect a Bumgarner trade to happen anytime soon.

This latest Bumgarner report comes just two days after ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that evaluators in contact with the Giants don’t believe the team is serious about trading Bumgarner. Front offices will call, but for now, it sounds like one of the team’s all-time legends is staying put.

So, how long before this state of affairs changes?

Let’s Make a Trade for Paul Goldschmidt!

The Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly keen on trading perennial MVP candidate Paul Goldschmidt, as he has just one year left on his contract and will be one of the most desired free agents of the 2020 class. While every team could use a player of Goldschmidt’s caliber, some fit better than others. A handful of our staff members were asked to come up with trades for Goldschmidt—these are completely speculative and unsourced, but deals we believe could come to fruition. So who has the best package for Goldschmidt anyway?

You have to admit, it would make the softball game a lot more interesting….

Phillies and Indians match up very well for a big trade

There have been plenty of starting pitchers connected to the Phillies this offseason. There was James Paxton, before the Yankees trade. Robbie Ray. Madison Bumgarner. Zack Greinke.

Patrick Corbin, of course. The top free-agent lefty was in Philly on Tuesday.

Keep an eye on the Cleveland Indians. The Phillies and Indians match up as well for a big trade as any two clubs in baseball.

Wait a minute- since when do the Phillies need pitchers and not outfielders?

The Yankees trading for Robinson Cano would be colossally dumb

The reshaping of the Seattle Mariners roster that has started this offseason would reportedly include a trade of star infielder Robinson Cano if general manager Jerry Dipoto gets his way.

While that may not be a surprise to anyone who has already seen the Mariners trade ace James Paxton and catcher Mike Zunino, this part may be surprising: According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Mariners have tried to trade Cano back to the New York Yankees, where he played his first nine seasons and was an All-Star five times.

Do it! Do it! Spite this columnist! Do it!

(Ulterior motive? Me?)

Giancarlo Stanton to Giants makes no sense if Yankees will trade him

One year ago, Giants fans were on Giancarlo Stanton watch every day. That won’t be happening again, despite a report the New York Yankees already might be willing to trade the slugger.

According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, there are “long-shot rumblings” about the Yankees trying to trade Stanton after only one season in the Bronx. The writer also lists the Giants as a team that could reasonably explore the possibility of adding the former MVP after making such a strong push for him last offseason.

Yes, the idea of the Giants adding Stanton and his 38 home runs from last season—or 22 more than anyone on San Francisco’s roster—always will be intriguing. But there are way too many factors in why this won’t happen, and it all starts with a depressing blast from the past.

Among other things, when Arnold Johnson 2.0 gives you a present, you don’t respond by regifting it.
