Why Yankees nearly traded Mariano Rivera to Tigers in 1995

Before Mariano Rivera became an integral piece of the Yankees dynasty, he was nearly traded to the Detroit Tigers for David Wells in the summer of 1995.

In an excerpt from Bill Pennington’s book, “Chump to Champs,” then-Yankees GM Gene Michael was “leaning” toward trading the 25-year-old right-hander, who recently struggled when called up to the majors, but stalled.

Rivera had just been sent back down to the minors and was on the disabled list. The Tigers wanted to make sure the injury was not serious before going forward with a deal, either, but in Rivera’s first start back something happened that may have changed the course of Yankees history.

Rivera threw five perfect innings before a rainstorm ended his day, but the right-hander’s velocity jumped from around 91 mph to 95-96 mph.

A question for all of you:

What, if anything, changes if Rivera ends up a Tiger?

Madison Bumgarner is forcing contenders to consider trade with Giants

Madison Bumgarner did not get off to the strongest start to 2019. But don’t look now, because the Giants ace just might be finding the form that made him one of the top pitchers in the game.

Bumgarner is coming off his best performance of the still-young season, giving up only one run in six innings to the NL West rival Dodgers on Wednesday. That prompted catcher Buster Posey to say the left-hander displayed “the best stuff he’s had all year.”

As it turns out, Posey wasn’t blowing smoke. Bumgarner was ... or was throwing it, rather.

As ESPN’s Buster Olney points out, Bumgarner’s average fastball velocity in the Giants’ win was 91.9 mph—essentially the same as it was in 2015, when the lefty arguably had his best season as a pro. He also generated 18 missed swings, his most in any start since September 2016 (also against the Dodgers). All 18 missed swings came on fastballs.

Mind you, this sort of trade talk is really only meaningful if there’s any sense of what the Giants could get in return….

Source: Phillies have indeed had trade talks with Marlins regarding J.T. Realmuto

The Phillies have engaged in recent conversations with the Miami Marlins regarding a trade for All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto, a baseball source confirmed. The talks were initially reported by several national outlets on Tuesday.

The Phillies were linked to Realmuto during the winter meetings two months ago. At the time, a member of the Marlins organization said the Phillies didn’t have the prospects to pull off a deal. But after months of trying to move Realmuto for top value, the Marlins’ price tag is believed to have come down and that has put the Phillies in the hunt.

Realmuto turns 28 in March and won’t be a free agent until after the 2020 season. He hit .277 with 30 doubles, 21 homers, 74 RBIs and a .825 OPS for the Marlins last season. Realmuto has seen young stars and former teammates such as Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna get shipped out by the rebuilding Marlins and he is eager to be the next guy to go.

So, what among the Phillies’ collection of magic beans do we suppose Captain Intangibles will accept?

MLB rumors: Red Sox didn’t find Jackie Bradley Jr. trade to their liking

The Boston Red Sox need to figure out which of their upcoming free agents in 2019 and 2020 to pay long-term, and that’s going to create a lot of tough decisions.

The Sox could get ahead of those decisions by trading one or more of their veterans who are up for free agency in the near future. One of those players with free agency on the horizon is outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr., and The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported Saturday that Boston looked at trading the 2018 American League Championship Series MVP but didn’t find a package that made sense.

It appears that talks truly broke down when he refused to talk to management about his Jackpot Wad.
