Should the Red Sox Trade Mookie Betts?

With Dave Dombrowski out and a new baseball operations guru presumably on the way in, the Red Sox are approaching a critical juncture. Chief among the priorities of Boston’s revamped front office will be dealing with 2018 AL MVP Mookie Betts, which could mean dealing Mookie Betts ahead of his contract year or trying to build one last team around him before he becomes a coveted free agent.

The question is simple, the answer is not: Should the Red Sox trade Mookie Betts this winter?

It strikes me as a lousy idea, but, if they’re being serious, the Giants have a player that (if the the Red Sox fan base offers the sort of pressure I expect) could result in the steal of the century…..

Detroit declined trades for Javier Baez, Alex Bregman to keep Michael Fulmer in 2017

Is it better as a general manager to be haunted by the trades you never made or the ones you did?

For Tigers general manager Al Avila, the answer may be the former.

In 2017, with a chance to acquire some of baseball’s most marketable and dominant players, Avila chose instead to hang onto a pitcher whose career has since gone wildly off track.

In a rather damning report on Avila’s ability to maneuver in baseball’s trade market, the Detroit Free Press learned that the GM who just received a contract extension previously refused deals for Cubs shortstop Javier Baez and Astros third baseman Alex Bregman.

For those of you who are fans of “The Road Not Taken”.

Padres need pitching, and Mets’ Noah Syndergaard could be the starter they land

NEW YORK – It’s no secret the San Diego Padres seek a front-of-the-rotation starter.

San Diego has plenty of young, exciting position players to build around like Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado, but they lack elite arms.

There are certainly some pitchers to be excited about, like Chris Paddack and lefty prospect MacKenzie Gore, but there is always risk in building around pitching prospects, both due to the injury concerns and the developmental process.

For a team that seems ready to take that next step, adding a premium, established starter could go a long way toward speeding up the contending process.

Bit of a risky move- there are people who invade San Diego every year who like Thor, but I get the impression that the locals aren’t fond of those folk….

Madison Bumgarner trade isn’t what Pablo Sandoval wants to see Giants do

If that was Madison Bumgarner’s final home start in a Giants uniform, Pablo Sandoval made sure it’d be a memorable one.

In the bottom of the 13th inning Tuesday night at Oracle Park, Sandoval sent the home fans happy when he drilled a walk-off home run to the opposite field off Cubs reliever Brad Brach.

Earlier in the game, Bumgarner continued his recent hot stretch, limiting Chicago to three runs and six hits over seven innings before giving way to San Francisco’s bullpen, which proceeded to pitch six innings of one-run ball.

No one had the heart to explain to Sandoval that his leverage on such matters is somewhere between slim and nil, and Slim just left town….

MLB Power Rankings: What baseball’s best teams need at the trade deadline

Are you ready for Major League Baseball to be consumed by the trade deadline? Because it’s that time of the year.

From today until the trade deadline on July 31, expect plenty of rumors about who might be on the move and just as many takes about who should be buying and selling.

So for this week’s installment of the MLB Power Rankings, we’re doing something special — ranking the teams, but also assessing what they’ll be looking to do in the next two weeks. Particularly with this week’s Top 10.

You mean, other than a good five-cent cigar?

Giants’ relievers have fueled playoff push, but also are valuable trade assets

SAN FRANCISCO – The strength of this San Francisco Giants roster that has kept them in the NL wild-card race is also what makes them such an appealing trade partner.

The Giants’ bullpen, anchored by Will Smith, Tony Watson and Sam Dyson, entered Sunday with the second-best ERA in the National League.

That stout collection of relievers has made up for a poor offense and inconsistent starting pitching, and has them within 2 1/2 games of a wild-card spot.

Yet, those three standout relievers represent a chance for the Giants to infuse talent into a system that needs help.

The Giants are about as close to reaching the playoffs as the Red Sox are- but no one will ever run an article suggesting that they should trade Mookie Betts in preparation for their future….
