Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-2-2014

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, May 2, 1914:

Three Japanese entered the offices of the Pirates in the Farmers’ Bank Building yesterday and inquired of Assistant Secretary Sam Watters if it was the Japanese consul’s office.

“No, sir,” replied Watters. “This is the office of the Pittsburgh Baseball Club.”

“But, sir,” responded the spokesman, “on the roof of this building is the flag of our country, and when we asked below where the office of the flag was they sent us here.”

Then Sam tumbled. The flag this year has a big red figure of a baseball in the center with white all around it. From the street it is a duplicate of the Japanese flag. The matter was explained and the three Japs were guests of the management at yesterday’s game between the Pirates and Reds.

As a result, they changed the flag. The new flag had two horizontal stripes - black on top, yellow on the bottom.

You should have seen all the confused Austrians.
