A’s Sonny Gray: WBC insurance denial ‘an unfortunate thing’ - SFGate

I’m not sure exactly what this means about their health.

The A’s right-hander wanted to pitch in the second round of the WBC next month, but the insurance carrier for the event pulled the plug because Gray didn’t meet some requirements after twice missing time with injuries last year. Gray spent more than 60 days on the disabled list, he was on the DL in late August, and when he returned, he didn’t pitch more than 10 innings.
“It’s not up to us or MLB, it’s up to the insurance company,” A’s general manager David Forst said. “MLB pushed the issue and asked the insurance carrier to let him pitch, and they didn’t do it. ... He feels great. He’s throwing.”

Canada’s Russell Martin also was denied insurance coverage for this WBC because of a previous knee injury.

A’s Khris Davis won’t play in WBC, discusses love for Oakland - San Francisco Chronicle

I get why MLB wants the WBC. I can also get why players, especially pitchers, wouldn’t want to be part of it.

Davis said he doesn’t believe the WBC would be a distraction but added, “I think this would complicate things a little. … It’s more of a timing issue. I need to be here in Arizona during these dates.”

Shohei Otani, the player we all wanted to see at the WBC, will hit but not pitch - CBSSports.com

It’s worth noting that Otani could still appear in the tournament as a hitter. The odds of that are uncertain, however, given Nippon-Ham’s concern that Otani’s condition could require surgery if it worsens.

The Selig Years, Part Three: Baseball’s Current Position

MLB is an increasingly dominant hegemon on the American and the global baseball scene. That hegemony affects almost every pitch that is thrown in the United States, from youth baseball all the way up to the World Series. It is a product of a confluence of events largely outside the realm of baseball, including such developments as the civil rights movement and population shifts following World War II. MLB’s domination of the sport was not inevitable, but that is what has happened over the past fifty or sixty years. Just as it was not inevitable, it is also not irreversible.

Leyland Wants Change In U.S. Mentality In Next Year’s WBC

“As everybody knows, our country probably hasn’t taken it quite as seriously as some of the other countries in the past,” Leyland said. “We are trying to change that mentality.”

Jerry Weinstein’s new task: managing Israel | MLB.com

Ike Davis is not an edge.

You have a roster of guys with professional experience. Is that an edge?

Weinstein: Sure, but so do the teams from Great Britain and Brazil, and we’ve got a lot of question marks because we’ve got a lot of old guys on there who really haven’t done a whole lot baseball-wise lately, guys like Josh Satin, Ike Davis and Jason Marquis, but we’ve got some names, and it’s a short series. Anything could happen in a short series. I’m optimistic.
