Is the World Baseball Classic Injury Effect Real? – The Ringer

Would Smyly be hurt if he hadn’t played in the WBC? That’s an open question. If I were a GM of a team, I wouldn’t want my pitchers in the WBC because I’d expect my training staff to know my players better which *should mean* they’d be in a better position to have my players better prepared to open the season healthy.

It’s understandable that team officials would “remain wary of the WBC,” as Rosenthal wrote. Teams have many millions of dollars tied up in their players’ well-being and the outcome of the regular season, and the loss of a single pivotal player such as Smyly can derail a winter’s work and lead to lasting frustration, even if the GM (in this case, Jerry Dipoto) declines to publicly point a finger at the WBC. For now, though, the evidence of an injury effect isn’t strong enough to justify preventing players from participating, especially since a well-populated tournament is so much fun for fans — and, in the long term, potentially beneficial for baseball, which in turn enriches teams.

Trupin: Drew Smyly’s arm has drowned, he’s out 6-8 weeks

If only he had pitched in meaningless Cactus League games in lieu of meaningless WBC games…

Cool cool cool. Drew Smyly was the acquisition that signaled for many a shift in the Mariners from fringy contenders to Wild Card favorites. With his return expected in June, they’ll have to rely on their considerable but lightly proven pitching depth. Ariel Miranda will get first crack in the rotation, reportedly, and will start the fourth game of the season in Houston. The choice to continue stretching him out as a starter will now come in handy, albeit sooner than anyone would have liked. According to a doctor from Rice University, flexor bundle strains are an elbow injury that develop due to overexertion over time, which makes it equally plausible that this was exacerbated by Smyly’s WBC start, or that he simply would have developed this later on regardless. It’s tough to say. On the somewhat positive side, flexor bundle strains supposedly respond well to rest and rehab. Less cheerily, a similar injury, albeit more serious, ended Adrian Sampson’s season last year, did similarly to Roenis Elias, and contributed to Homer Bailey’s struggles recently. This is trouble, pure and simple.

Yankees’ Didi Gregorius will miss Opening Day | MLB.com

Not good news for the Yankees.

Didi Gregorius is expected to miss the first month of the regular season with a strained subscapularis muscle in his throwing shoulder, the Yankees said on Tuesday.

Team USA defeats Japan to reach Classic final | MLB.com

“It means a heck of a lot,” outfielder Andrew McCutchen said of Team USA finally clearing the semifinal hurdle. “We’ve got a great group of guys on this team who have dedicated this time to be able to try and win some ballgames. Sacrifices had to be made, and there are no egos when that door opens.”

Unbeaten PR walks off vs. Netherlands to final

It was the golden-locked men of Puerto Rico, who prevailed, 4-3, in the bottom of the 11th inning on Monday night at Dodger Stadium when Eddie Rosario’s sacrifice line drive to center field drove home Carlos Correa, sparking a celebration by first base and ending a marathon that clocked in at 4 hours, 19 minutes, and will be talked about for quite some time in both countries and beyond.

“It means a lot, because Puerto Ricans have gone through a very difficult [economic] situation currently, and we were able to unite our country,” Correa said, “because of our blond hair and through baseball.”

US faces Dominican Republic in WBC ‘17 | MLB.com

It’s payback time for the United States. Team USA will send Danny Duffy to the mound. The Dominican Republic will counter with Ervin Santana in his first start of the tournament.
“It’s going to be a great game [Saturday],” Jones said. “We are going to bring what we got. We are facing Ervin Santana, somebody that is familiar with most of the players, so we will give it all we got and they are going to give it all they got. Hopefully, it’s a great game.”

Team USA rides late home runs past Venezuela | MLB.com

Sounds like a fun game to watch.

Late-inning heroics from Adam Jones and Eric Hosmer vaulted the United States past Venezuela, 4-2, on Wednesday night at Petco Park in yet another World Baseball Classic thriller.

The U.S. bats were quiet throughout much of the night until Jones brought a much-needed spark with a game-tying leadoff homer in the eighth. Hosmer followed three batters later with a two-run blast that ultimately handed the U.S. a win in its second-round opener.

Puerto Rico defeats Dominican Republic | MLB.com

Although I had to tap out again, I enjoyed most of the game. If critics want to complain about the lack of interest by American fans, maybe they should realize that it’s tough for most people to get into the tournament when a lot of the games are played at unwatchable times for people who work and live on the East Coast. I’m hardcore so I make the attempt. So, critics, cut the American fans slack for a tournament geared to the International market.

Netherlands eliminates Cuba from 2017 WBC | MLB.com

Another Cinderella story.

Even with a talent-rich team headlined by big leaguers Xander Bogaerts, Didi Gregorius, Jonathan Schoop, Andrelton Simmons and Jurickson Profar, the Netherlands is viewed an underdog in this year’s Classic—at least in contrast to the loaded Pool F dueling on the other side of the Pacific.

Nimmo Unlikely To Be Ready When Camp Ends

The Mets could still carry Michael Conforto as their fifth outfielder, though some in the organization feel he is better-served receiving everyday at-bats at AAA Las Vegas. Another option would be an infielder capable of playing the outfield, such as Ty Kelly, T.J. Rivera, or Matt Reynolds.

Nimmo, 23, is ranked as the Mets’ No. 8 prospect by MLBPipeline.com.

FRS MLBRumors & Rumblings: Jose Quintana’s stock rises even higher

I turned on the game and watched a few pitches and wondered, “Who is this guy?” Although I watched him pitch a few times, I didn’t recognize his stuff, which was ticked up. My next thought was, “The White Sox might not like this if he’s hurt in a month.”

The United States rallied against Colombia’s bullpen for a 3-2 win in 10 innings but Quintana wowed the scouts in attendance.

“Everyone knows he’s a heckuva pitcher but that might had been the best I have ever seen him, considering it’s spring training and he’s still building arm strength,” a scout from a National League team said. “That’s an All-Star lineup right there and he cut right through them. I’m sure it had to make Rick Hahn very happy.”

MLB clubs perpetuate idea that U.S. players don’t care about World Baseball Classic | FOX Sports

This is an exhibition series. As much as I enjoy it, I wouldn’t want my favorite team’s pitchers get blown out participating and end up missing significant time away from their paid job.

This is not a criticism of Archer, who surely loves the U.S. as much as Quintana loves Colombia, and said that the sequence of events leading to Colombia’s go-ahead rally left him “sick to his stomach.”

The blame goes to clubs like the Rays, who contribute to the perception that U.S. cares less about the WBC than other countries by setting greater restrictions on the use of American players and in some cases discouraging them to participate.

The clubs are 50-50 partners with the players union in the WBC, but most managers and front offices continue to regard the event with dread, fearing injuries. Never mind that a number of pitchers routinely suffer one malady or another in spring training, anyway – Alex Reyes, David Price, Sonny Gray, Andrew Cashner, Zach Britton, Huston Street and Scott Kazmir are among those currently sidelined.

Andrew McCutchen’s vow after Pirates dangle him: ‘I’m going to have monster year’

“I’m not going to hold any grudges against them,” says McCutchen, a five-time All-Star. “I mean, I have people who say it should be my choice because of the sacrifices I’ve made and the things I’ve done for the organization. But l ’m not going to be angry.

“I’m just going to go out and play my game because that’s my job. I work for them. They are my bosses.

“They ask me to do something, it means I have to do it.”
