Years of using an average of 50 players have littered major leagues with former Twins

The Twins used a franchise-record 49 players in 2016, broke that record a year later by suiting up 52 players, then outdid themselves once more by fielding 54 players in 2018. In fact, eight of the top biggest rosters utilized by the Twins have been active in the past eight seasons.

With more Twins than ever, it follows that there are more former Twins around the majors than ever before.

A record 45 players who once played for Minnesota wore a different major league uniform in 2018. That’s not counting another 16 in minor league ball with another organization, seven more in independent ball, and 10 former Twins playing professionally in another country.

A rather interesting exercise, and one that may very well be of interest if done in comparative form with all the teams in MLB.

15 ex-major leaguers who are kicking ass in a different country

Carlos Zambrano has made six starts for the Leones de Yucatan of the Mexican League this year. There are a lot of words below this, but none of them are as important as the ones in that sentence. Somewhere, on this continent, Zambrano is living the alternate reality we deserve, the one where pitchers don’t float away when they’re 31 because the human body hates baseball. He could have been another CC Sabathia, dang it.

Also, Zambrano’s six starts haven’t been very good, but it’s important that you know that he’s still pitching.

This post is a roundup of players like Zambrano, former major leaguers who are playing somewhere other than Canada or the United States, except there’s one major difference: These players are thriving.

Are there any Eric Thameses or Miles Mikolases here? Probably not, but I’m not going to rule it out. At the very least, it’s worth taking a look at the players who are having awesome seasons in a different country, such as ...

Exiled by the Cubs, Sammy Sosa Is Enjoying the Life He Wants You to See

A bit late, I admit, but something that I think will be of interest in several regards.

Inside the cool, hushed second-floor lounge of Dubai’s grandest hotel, a waiter carefully prepares a shallow glass of 12-year Macallan. A familiar figure smiles, observing the meticulous way that his drink—nearly $100 for a double portion—is prepared. Three ice cubes, so symmetrical they could have been laser cut, gleam as they’re tongued into the scotch without a splash or even a clink.

He leans back, arms wide, into a plush sofa trimmed in blue leather. A crisp blue suit clings to his shoulders and chest, still broad from 500 push-ups each day, even as he’s set to turn 50 in November. His golden eyeglasses are stamped MAYBACH across each temple. A monogram peeks from under the left sleeve of his jacket: S.S. He gazes up into the majestic atrium of the 56-story Burj Al Arab Jumeriah, self-billed as “the Most Luxurious Hotel in the World” and famously shaped like a sail swelling above the azure waters of the Persian Gulf. “Now,” he says, “you see why it’s seven stars.”

Twenty summers after he and Mark McGwire chased the ghost of Roger Maris—and saved a sport, as they both contend—this is the life of Sammy Sosa. Or at least the one he wants you to see. His are the curated days of an Instagram influencer, even if Sosa isn’t much for social media. “I never watch Facebook, Instagram, some of that B.S. s—-,” he says. “I don’t have time for that.”
