Major League Baseball abandons plans for $10 million academy at Birmingham’s George Ward Park

Major League Baseball no longer wants to build a $10 million baseball and softball academy at Birmingham’s George Ward Park and has instead turned its attention to a baseball complex in Vero Beach, Florida.

In an email obtained by AL.com, MLB representative Tony Reagins wrote: “We believe the youth of Birmingham would benefit from our programs, however the timing is not right and quite frankly may never be.”...

“I’ve spoken with Tony Reagins a large number of times. He said he was appalled at Birmingham politics and some of the comments made during the process. No one proposed an alternative. So, it seems to me Birmingham’s not interested as it may have seemed,” Abbott added.

Elvis Luciano is MLB’s first player born in the 2000’s

Blue Jays reliever Elvis Luciano made his major league debut on Sunday against the Tigers. The right-hander gave up a hit and a walk and struck out one while tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings of work.

More astonishingly, though, Baseball Reference points out that Luciano is the first player born in the 2000’s to reach the majors. The 19-year-old came into the world on February 15, 2000. The next-youngest player in baseball is Fernando Tatis Jr., who was born on January 2, 1999. After Tatis, it’s Juan Soto, born on October 25, 1998.

This calls for variants of the Beloit Mindset List, doesn’t it?

Young players have officially taken over Major League Baseball

This summer, when we asked major league veterans to talk about getting old, only one of them—Adam Jones, father of two sons—brought up Lightning McQueen.

Aging is not so much the body breaking down, Jones theorized, as the fact that every generation is better than the one before it. “It’s not an excuse, but the game’s gotten harder. That’s all it is: the next generation. It’s like that line from ‘Cars 3.’ His grandpa told him, ‘You’ll know when to retire. The youngsters will tell you.’ I’m nowhere near that, but the next generation’s here, and they’re really good.”

It was the car’s uncle, not his grandpa, but otherwise Jones knows of what he speaks. The next generation is here, and they are really good. This is true of every generation—a universal truth—but it has probably never been more true in baseball than it is right now, right this very second.

A commentary on young players, using statistical evidence to consider if they are, indeed, better than ever before- I will leave it to those who know the numbers better to debate this point.
