Yusei Kikuchi apparently used pine tar on brim of hat

A minor controversy brewed during Wednesday night’s game in the Bronx between the Mariners and Yankees. Mariners starter Yusei Kikuchi apparently was using pine tar he had slathered on the underside of the brim of his hat. The YES Network broadcast showed this close-up in the eighth inning

Kikuchi pitched well, bringing a no-hit bid into the sixth inning. He held the Yankees to a lone run on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings.

Nice to see that, with all the arguments present involving the sport, that some old stand-bys last.

Kikuchi to ‘open’ for Mariners against Rangers

One of the reasons left-hander Yusei Kikuchi signed with the Seattle Mariners in the offseason was the unique wellness plan they pitched to him.

Trying to avoid the injuries that have befallen Japanese stars like Yu Darvish, Shohei Ohtani and Daisuke Matsuzaka once they started pitching every five days in the majors as compared to the six-man rotations they use overseas, the Mariners will use Kikuchi as an “opener” about once a month, pitching just the first inning or so before handing the ball to one of Seattle’s pitching prospects.

That plan will be put to use for the first time Friday night against the visiting Texas Rangers.

Question, for those who know Japanese baseball better than I do- is it just the rotations that are at issue, or could there be other causes?

‘Rookie’ Kikuchi in spotlight in major league debut in Japan

TOKYO -Talk about a pressure situation.

Just as he was adjusting to life in the United States, Yusei Kikuchi is back in Japan getting ready to make his major league pitching debut in front of a sellout crowd at Tokyo Dome.

From his new teammates, to his Japanese fans to his family and friends, everyone will be expecting Kikuchi to come up with a dominant performance when he takes the mound for the Seattle Mariners on Thursday in Game 2 of the season-opening series against the Oakland A’s.

So, how well do you suppose that you’d do, under these circumstances?

All eyes on Kikuchi during his spring debut for Mariners

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Yusei Kikuchi felt the nerves Monday that would normally accompany taking the mound in front of tens of thousands of fans in a major ballpark, not the few thousand who showed up for a spring training game in the desert.

“I’ve been pitching in Japan for the last nine years and I wanted to test what I was doing in Japan against major league hitters and I wanted to see how they reacted,” Kikuchi said through an interpreter. “So I was really kind of excited and also nervous about that.”

Kikuchi made his debut for the Seattle Mariners throwing two innings against the Cincinnati Reds in a start that featured a little bit of everything, from moments of dominance to Kikuchi working out of a jam.

MLB free agency: Giants have extensively scouted pitcher Yusei Kikuchi

The first free-agent pitching domino fell Tuesday when former D’backs ace Patrick Corbin reportedly agreed to a massive contract with the Nationals.

One day prior to the Corbin news though, another interesting piece to the puzzle was unraveled in the pitching market. Star Japanese left-hander Yusei Kikuchi was officially posted by the Seibu Lions.

“He’s an accomplished guy from over there,” Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said Wednesday on KNBR. “We have scouted him pretty extensively, as other teams have. A lot of players from over there (Japan) have a preference for being on the West Coast just for proximity, so that puts us in a pretty good situation.”

Mind you, if the Giants sign him, I have the feeling he’ll turn out like their free-agent signings so often have traditionally….

Seibu Lions posting Yusei Kikuchi Tuesday; Yankees on the radar

As per the terms of the posting agreement negotiated last year, the Lions’ fee for posting Kikuchi will be determined by the amount of his contract. The more money Kikuchi receives, the more his new club owes to the Lions, as it must pay 20 percent of the first guaranteed $25 million, 17.5 percent of the amount between $25,000,001 and $50 million and 15 percent of the total value exceeding $50 million. Percentages of bonuses, escalator clauses and options also factor into the equation.
