Tulowitzki to play shortstop for Yanks until Didi returns

NEW YORK (AP)—The Yankees view Troy Tulowitzki as their starting shortstop until Didi Gregorius returns from Tommy John surgery this summer.

Still, general manager Brian Cashman won’t rule out trying to sign Manny Machado, one of the top free agents on the market.

And, in his first question-and-answer session of the year, Cashman revealed he has dragged talks to trade Sonny Gray until the Yankees know CC Sabathia will be ready to pitch following surgery to implant a stent in an artery from ...

WATCH: Jim Duquette says Mets almost landed Ken Griffey Jr. via trade

The Mets came close to landing Ken Griffey Jr. in a blockbuster trade back in 2000, but the haul of players that would have been sent in Griffey’s place could have altered how well the Mets would have fared during their incredible 2000 season.

According to former Mets Assistant GM Jim Duquette, they offered a package of Armando Benitez, Octavio Dotel and Roger Cedeno, but Grifffey’s no trade clause was in the way and at that time he stated he only wanted to go to Cincinatti.

“There was an ...

MLB rumors: Red Sox didn’t find Jackie Bradley Jr. trade to their liking

The Boston Red Sox need to figure out which of their upcoming free agents in 2019 and 2020 to pay long-term, and that’s going to create a lot of tough decisions.

The Sox could get ahead of those decisions by trading one or more of their veterans who are up for free agency in the near future. One of those players with free agency on the horizon is outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr., and The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported Saturday that Boston looked at trading the 2018 American League Championship ...

Wanted but not needed, this MLB pitcher has redefined the term ‘journeyman’

The biggest stars get all of the attention. That’s why we’re all waiting with anticipation to see where Bryce Harper and Manny Machado will play baseball for the next decade, and how much money they’ll make doing it.

In doing that though, we tend to lose sight of the players whose futures are anything but stable or certain. The players who are always one phone call from being forced to pick up and move on.

One such player is veteran pitcher and now certified journeyman Oliver Drake.

A ...

Ichiro Suzuki, who has been playing professional baseball since his Pacific League debut in Japan as an 18-year-old in 1992, could have a spot on the Seattle Mariners’ Opening Day roster in March.

Per Greg Johns of MLB.com, M’s general manager Jerry Dipoto said Thursday that “Ichi will be on our team when we go to Tokyo. He’ll be an active player.”

The 45-year-old Suzuki is a baseball legend who took the league by storm when he joined the Mariners in 2001. He won the American League’s ...

Mets get infielder J.D. Davis from Astros

The Mets continued their active offseason on Sunday with a pair of transactions that addressed their infield. The club acquired infielder J.D. Davis from the Astros and traded catcher Kevin Plawecki to the Indians, and the club’s return included a throng of Minor Leaguers.

The Astros sent Minor League infielder Cody Bohanek along with Davis. To Houston, the Mets sent outfielder Ross Adolph, infielder Luis Santana and catcher Scott Manea.

Zach Britton agrees to deal with Yankees | MLB.com

Britton’s new pact with the Bombers is a three-year deal that will average $13 million each season, with an opt-out clause after 2020 if the team does not exercise its option for the 2022 campaign. If Britton departs after two years, he would have earned $26 million; completing the full four years would net him $53 million. The signing has not been announced by the team.

How dancing on Cheney Stadium’s roof could cost the Rainiers nearly $60,000

Climbing the long ladder leading up to Cheney Stadium’s roof last summer, I had a lot running through my mind.

I was thinking about the next performance I’d be a part of, tasked with introducing the beloved Epic Sax Gorilla to the crowd.

I was thinking about how the Rainiers mascot, Rhubarb, made climbing the metal ladder look easy – which it wasn’t – even with the reindeer’s oversized feet.

And I was thinking about how on earth I’d put all of this into words the next day for ...

Seating capacity at Tropicana Field will be reduced to about 25,000 to 26,000 under a renovation plan aimed at improving fans’ experience.

The team on Friday announced plans to create a more “intimate” atmosphere, including the creation of the Left Field Ledge in the lower level featuring premium seating for small groups, and the elimination of the upper-deck 300 level.

The capacity at the Trop previously was 31,042.

Marcus Semien to honor A’s mentor Ron Washington, who overhauled his defense - SFChronicle.com

This is great.

When Ron Washington began working with Marcus Semien in 2015, the A’s shortstop lacked some of the basics at the position.

“I wasn’t even holding my glove correctly,” Semien said. “Wash had to tell me to spread my hand to give the glove the widest surface, and then give the glove a push through the ball to eliminate any funky hops.”

The pairing of Washington, the longtime A’s coach and the winningest manager in Rangers’ history, and Semien, an everyday big-league ...

Posnanski: How the lack of Hall of Fame unanimity became A Thing, and why it should end with Mariano Rivera – The Athletic

The Hall of Fame voting process has far bigger problems than worrying whether isolated voters don’t vote for a guy with enough support to get voted in anyway.

One answer to that question is no, of course he shouldn’t be first. As stated: Ty Cobb should have been first. Joe DiMaggio should have been first. Ted Williams … Stan Musial … Willie Mays … Henry Aaron … Jackie Robinson … Tom Seaver … Cal Ripken … Greg Maddux … Ken Griffey … all of those guys and more should have ...

What does it take for a new advanced stat to go mainstream? – The Athletic

One month ago, Baseball Prospectus introduced a new total-offense statistic called Deserved Runs Created Plus (DRC+). Although the site’s related pitching statistic, Deserved Run Average (DRA), has appeared in my Awards Watch columns since 2016 — at times with behind-the-scenes assistance from the statistic’s co-creator, Jonathan Judge — the launch of DRC+ caught me by surprise.

The introduction of DRA in early 2015 addressed a need. Sabermetrics continued, and ...

David Robertson signed with the Phillies with no agent and saved $1.15 million

Is this really true as long as the player is knowledgeable about the market, knows the CBA, and has a good lawyer?

Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports condemned Robertson’s choice, saying his “savings” might only be short term:

“Very likely cost himself much more than that,” Heyman tweeted. “He is a smart guy but not a trained agent. And he probably understands this isn’t a do-it-yourself project. Last time, with a qualifying offer (and an agent), he got exactly twice as much.”

Deadspin: It’s Time For Some Bryce Harper Game Theory

Is the news of a meeting with the Nationals evidence that the Nationals are still interested in Harper? Or is it evidence that they are trying to make his price higher for the Phillies?

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 1-3-2019

Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger, January 3, 1919:

President Heydler, of the National League, yesterday announced the appointment of William L. Veeck, vice president of the Chicago club, as a member of the rules committee of the league. President Heydler said that Veeck’s long experience as a baseball reporter qualified him for this duty.

This appointment seems appropriate because his son Bill Junior ruled.

Elsewhere in the news 100 years ago, former Braves infielder Ed Fitzpatrick appears to ...

Rumors swirl but Bryce Harper’s market remains far blurrier than Manny Machado’s - The Washington Post

Five hours?

According to a person with direct knowledge of Harper’s process, the 26-year-old and his agent, Scott Boras, met with Nationals owner Ted Lerner for five hours on the Saturday before Christmas. Asked to confirm that this meeting happened, multiple people with the club refused to do so, a departure from their relative openness about their status with Harper this winter. On the record and off it, club officials have been willing to discuss the Harper situation because it seemed ...

10 MLB Prospects We Hope Have A Healthy 2019 After Struggling With Injuries

Huge question mark.

1. Sixto Sanchez, RHP, Phillies

After Astros righthander Forrest Whitley, Sanchez has a compelling argument as the next best pitching prospect in baseball. He sits in the mid- to upper 90s and can break triple-digits, doing it without much effort and while filling the strike zone.

Yet Sanchez threw just 46.2 innings last year, with his final outing coming on June 3 before he went on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation. The Phillies say Sanchez is healthy and ...
