How Trevor Bauer’s gory finger led to Terry Francona’s piece de resistance

In the days leading up to Game 3 of the American League Championship Series, when Trevor Bauer sat in the Cleveland Indians’ trainer’s room getting treatment on his mangled right pinky, he kept asking the medical staff to use a soldering iron and burn shut the wound he suffered at a hotel when a drone he was repairing went haywire and sliced his finger from the nail to second knuckle. They laughed, even though they understood Bauer was dead serious and regretted not cauterizing it himself ...

The Postseason’s True Revelation Is a Two-Way Mystery Man

The best player in the world? We won’t know until he comes to MLB.

Otani’s 2016 performance produced the most climax-worthy stats page since late-career Barry Bonds. In 140 innings, he struck out 174 and allowed only four home runs, finishing with a 1.86 ERA — an improvement on his 2015 performance, when he’d been one of the top three contenders for the Sawamura Award, Japan’s equivalent of the Cy Young. While he was at it, he hit .322/.416/.588 in 382 plate appearances, launching 22 ...

Major League Baseball pushes for international draft in new CBA

Corruption or cost?

Under the terms of MLB’s initial concept, the new international draft system would start in March of 2018, with a 10-round draft held over two days. As the new structure evolved, with terms grandfathered into the process, the minimum age for draft-eligible players would be 18 years old by 2021.

As part of baseball’s proposal, MLB would operate facilities in the Dominican Republic, where international draft prospects would be invited to live to develop their skills and ...

Cleveland Indians team name, Chief Wahoo logo targeted in Canadian lawsuit |

An activist for indigenous cultures has asked an Ontario court to block the Cleveland Indians from using their team name and logo on uniforms in today’s playoff game in Toronto against the Blue Jays.

Douglas Cardinal, a Canadian architect who designed the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, is a member of the Blackfoot tribe. His request will be heard by the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto this afternoon.

Cardinal argues that the team name and mascot logo of Chief ...

Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger, October 17, 1916:

Suit has been filed against the Pacific Coast Baseball League for damages amounting to $10,000, by Miss Alice Butler, who charges that sufficient protection is not afforded baseball fans in the Oakland Park and that as a result her ward, ten-year-old Beatrice Silva, was struck with a foul ball which broke her nose.

OTP 2016 Oct 17: Politics, Sports, and the ‘League of Legends’ World Championship

The closer eSports comes to mirroring real world sports, the more we’ll see the truly political components of eSports. Traditional sports have long and complex ties with politics of all sorts, and you can already see these strands in their digital counterparts.

Baseball, perhaps the most American sport, traces close connections to the US military—at least going back as far as World War II. The home plate has also been the home of culture wars. If you’ve been to any baseball games that ...

Trevor Bauer reveals questionable taste in Star Wars movies

Bauer said his relationship with the drone (which he brought with him to the press conference), is like a good marriage. “We argue all the time.” He also explained that his interest in drones grew out of his love for Star Wars, because drones reminded him of the speeder bikes used by the Empire (and then by Luke, Leia, and at least one Ewok) on the forest moon of Endor in Return of the Jedi.

That led to what will undoubtedly be the most controversial moment of the session, when Bauer revealed ...

Red Sox’ coach Chili Davis deserves to be in manager ‘Pipeline’

Davis has worked his way up the coaching ladder. He has yet to manage in the minors, but that seeming prerequisite has been disproved in recent years as ex-players have stepped straight into the big chair.

The challenge that may be more difficult, though, is finding the right person, the right organization, to hire Davis — to take a chance on him, even if the bosses don’t know him from, say, 20 years ago.

Davis has been with two of the most progressive organizations around in the A’s ...

Hazen, 40, spent the previous 11 seasons working for the Red Sox in a variety of roles, beginning as director of player development in 2006.

“Mike’s background is the perfect balance of scouting, player development and analytics, which will all play an important role going forward,” Diamondbacks CEO Derrick Hall said in ...

Blue Jays Fan On A Mission To Prove Canadians Aren’t Stereotypically Polite

No beer cans?

Well, one Blue Jays fan, with his Justin Bieber mask and crying LeBron James sign, is on a mission to do away with that stereotype. … “I woke up at 5:30 a.m., I drove hundreds of kilometers to be here to counter the inaccurate stereotype that all Canadians are polite. Some of us are provocateurs. … I’m here to export Canadian culture at its finest—but not the stereotypical culture that is thought of, the Canadian as a bland, polite people, you know? We’re the fierce warrior.”

Pirates look to address deficiencies, close gap on Cubs in 2017 | TribLIVE

A lot of good stuff in this one.

Last offseason Huntington lamented the starting pitching market “blew up.” The average starting pitcher signed last offseason earned $10.02 million per year, compared to $8.07 in the 2014-15 offseason — a 21.6 percent increase….
Not only are proven veteran pitchers becoming more expensive, but the market for reclamation-type pitchers also is becoming more competitive. More teams are identifying the same players as undervalued thanks to growth of front ...
