Michael Conforto is the perfect player — just ask David Wright

The difference is talent.

Trading for Yoenis Cespedes changed the Mets’ world, but don’t underestimate what rookie outfielder Michael Conforto has meant to this club.

—-

“If you were going to build a ballplayer with the right approach along with the right amount of talent, he’d be the guy,’’ David Wright told The Post.
“He’s not entitled.’’

That alone is a gift from the baseball gods in this day and age.

“Some guys come in here and they’re loud, a lot more talking ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-3-2015

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, September 3, 1915:

The popularity of First Baseman Jake Daubert, captain of the Brooklyn Nationals, was attested today when it became known that he has been chosen by Flatbush Democrats for alderman. At [this week’s] caucus Daubert was designated to go into the September primaries as an aldermanic candidate by the Democrats in the Fifty-ninth District, where he resides.

He didn’t get elected. Daubert isn’t all that famous today, but he was a huge star 100 years ago. He ...

Abraham Almonte embracing his chance with Cleveland Indians after ditching a life of lies, anger and alcohol

The guy polishing off another drink in the middle of the nightclub hears a voice.

Almonte has been sucked so far into this lifestyle that he can’t acknowledge his actions or their consequences. He tells his wife he’s sleeping at the baseball complex, but he’s actually careening toward the club. He’s heading for another late night, one filled with lies to his family and lies to himself.

Almonte started drinking regularly at 19 while with the Yankees’ Class A affiliate. After he underwent ...

Someone Appears To Be Trying To Hoax The Marlins President Out Of His Job

About halfway through Ozuna’s stint in minor-league “jail,” rumors began circulating that there was a recording of some sort involving Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria and team president David Samson saying something awful about a player. The rumors were maddeningly vague. They also eerily predicted the contents of a brief audio file that was later emailed to us….

Then, out of the blue on Aug. 31, our tips email account received a 22-second audio file with the brief explanation that “it was ...

Bloop Hits: Warren Zevon and Bill Lee | FOX Sports

A story about the Spaceman.

As fate would have it, “Bill Lee” marked a turning point in both of their careers. Though Zevon continued to write brilliant songs until he died, he never again approached the kind of record sales he achieved with “Excitable Boy” and “Bad Luck Streak,” in part because of his personal demons and his testy relationship with the music business. Lee never pitched another full season in the majors, his career compromised by injuries, the 1981 strike and his ...

The Race for Last Place

Who will win “The Biggest Loser”?

Miami (54-79, one game out). Other than Oakland and maybe Milwaukee, this was the team on this list that had the highest hopes for 2015 coming in, though, then again, this is Miami, so you never know. Regardless, once Giancarlo Stanton got hurt, this team became impossible to watch. I love Ichiro as much as anyone else, but seeing him play every day in an empty building with a fish statue would make anyone sad. The Marlins might have a little push left in them ...

Japan Times: Taguchi hopes to realize dream of managing in U.S.

Well, I think he has a better chance than Tsuyoshi Shinjo does…

Former big leaguer So Taguchi has been touted as a candidate to manage the Pacfic League’s Orix Buffaloes next year and does dreams of managing one day — but in the United States rather than Japan.

“My final dream is to manage over there, be the first Japanese,” he told Kyodo News on Friday at Tokyo Dome. “I’ve held on to that final dream all this time. I don’t know how things will actually turn out, of course.”

Back to School: The Science Behind Toronto Flamethrower Marcus Stroman’s Rapid ACL Recovery «

I am shocked.

Marcus Stroman is starting tonight. For the Lansing Lugnuts, the Toronto Blue Jays’ A-ball affiliate, but still: He’ll be throwing baseballs to professional batters. Five months ago, that was something that no one but Stroman foresaw. And five years ago, the chronological realities of rehabbing from in-season surgery might have proven his prediction wrong. But Stroman’s is a special case, a partnership of personality and science that points the way toward the future of injury ...

Grant: Why Rangers prospect Joey Gallo struggled in Triple-A after first stint in majors | Dallas Morning News

“Hitters make changes based on what is comfortable or based on not having success,” Banister said. “Young hitters go through the phase where they have measured struggles that they’ve never had before and have the impulse that they have to fix something. Sticking to the process is the most difficult thing for every player to do when they have their first real struggle.

“All the things he went through, all of that has to happen for a young guy,” Banister added. “When they come out ...

Bat Flipping Draws Shrugs in South Korea But Scorn in America

In the United States, the bat flip exists on the abstruse list of behaviors considered rude and worthy of confrontation. In Korea, the flip is, well, just a flip. No one cares. This cultural variance, combined with the world-shrinking influence of social media, has created a disjointed international sports milieu in which players like Hwang have been celebrated, derided and deabted in a language they do not understand for a move they regard as involuntary.

Notable Sept. 1 Callups - BaseballAmerica.com

That’s not good.

Miami Marlins

Most Notable: None. What happens if a team decides not to add any players for September? It may come close to happening in Miami. The Marlins have seven pitchers and two position players on the disabled list. They have not added anyone yet and with only two position players on the 40-man roster who aren’t currently on the big league roster and few healthy pitching options, they are unlikely to do much to change that.

—Honus Wagner, 1906-09 (four straight), also seven in nine years from ’03-’11

—Nap Lajoie, 1901-04 (four straight)

“I try to work it through in advance but then when you get new pieces for your puzzle you don’t always think it all the way through,” he said. “The game presents different thoughts that you have not even thought about.

Paging the real Rick Porcello: Two dominant starts alter perceptions - Boston Red Sox Blog - ESPN

A little too late to save Ben Cherington.

“I think that for this year, this was the most consistent stuff I’ve had,” he said. “We moved the ball around well, and Blake [Swihart] called a great game back there. He and I were on the same page the entire night.”

The difference since his return, Porcello said, is in the renewed commitment to his sinker, the pitch upon which his success was predicated in Detroit. It may be confounding to understand how he got away from it so much in the first place, ...

The Process Report » Evan Longoria’s Contract

To calculate present value you need to discount future dollars. To do this we need the player’s salary, the number of years and an interest rate. After some discussion in the previously linked thread I have decided to use 5.3% for the discount rate due. Some legwork showed that his is a reasonable figure due to a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 5.3% for the fifty highest paid players between 2000 and 2015 using the USA Today Salary Database. I’m also estimating that a dollar per win on the ...

How to fix an MLB rule so stupid even the NFL doesn’t mess it up | New York Post

September roster expansion has been the norm forever. I can understand the reasoning by people who oppose but I think they should just keep it as it is. Sherman’s new idea is not an improvement. It will just lead to greater specialization for more of the season.

I think the sport should do something radical: You can use anyone in your system to play anytime from Game 1 to Game 162, you just have to announce your 25-man roster six hours before first pitch.

The Secrets of Baseball Management | FOX Sports

Earl Weaver took over the managing job after spending years in the Orioles farm system. If you read his books, he was most proud of his ability to evaluate players. This helps explain his level of comfort making some of the moves that he did.

‘Yankees Suck! Yankees Suck!’ «

I remember seeing these guys outside of Fenway. I didn’t realize so many of them were connected.

They were sold outside Fenway Park for $10 a shirt, and they sold very, very well. Wilson and LeMoine contend they had more money than they knew what to do with, and all of it was cash in hand. Looking to diversify his portfolio and grow his bankroll, Wilson began to spend some of his share in low-level drug deals. But this one was different; by his usual standards, this one was ambitious.

It’s a lesson in sheer determination. A baseball player from Cuba has been sleeping on the sidewalk outside Dodger Stadium for 17 days, waiting and dreaming about one thing: baseball . . . He’s determined to stay outside Dodger Stadium for as long as it takes, and has been working out as much as he can on the streets, hoping the owners will give him a shot on the field.
