Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-23-2018

Memphis News Scimitar, October 23, 1918:

At least six more gold stars are to be added to baseball’s service flag, according to reports received during the past week. Four of the deaths of former players who entered the service were in camps on this side and from pneumonia following influenza, the other two were in France. Two of the departed heroes were former major catchers, Harry M. Glenn and John C. Cooper.

Capt. Eddie Grant, former New York Giant third sacker, was killed in action a few ...

World Series preview: Dodgers vs. Red Sox is more than 100 years in the making

Two of Major League Baseball’s most famous franchises meet in a World Series that we haven’t seen in the last 100 years — the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox.

It’s Clayton Kershaw vs. Chris Sale, Yasiel Puig vs. Mookie Betts, Cody Bellinger vs. J.D. Martinez, Justin Turner’s beard vs. Craig Kimbrel’s beard and Manny Machado vs. all of Boston if he keeps his villain act up.

It’s a team looking to win its first World Series in exactly 30 years vs. a team trying to win ...

Rangers’ manager search still has no end in sight, and that might be the best thing for the organization

SURPRISE, Ariz.—The Rangers’ managerial search marched into its second month over the weekend. There is no end in sight.

This is likely to take at least another week, since Major League Baseball all but forbids teams from making major announcements during the World Series so as not to divert attention from the game’s diamond event.

Besides, what’s the hurry?

If need be, I’ll take the job- can I manage in suit and tie?

Orioles’ Davis, Wright discuss team’s offseason changes at charity event

It was a quick diaspora from Baltimore for many of the Orioles’ players after their nightmare 115-loss season ended, but a pair who have sought through their ups and downs on the field to be more than uniformed presences in the city were back in town Monday for a charity event.

First baseman Chris Davis and right-hander Mike Wright Jr. represented the Orioles at the second annual Beltway Brews and Boards Celebrity Cornhole Tournament at the Baltimore Museum of Industry, an event featuring ...

Years of using an average of 50 players have littered major leagues with former Twins

The Twins used a franchise-record 49 players in 2016, broke that record a year later by suiting up 52 players, then outdid themselves once more by fielding 54 players in 2018. In fact, eight of the top biggest rosters utilized by the Twins have been active in the past eight seasons.

With more Twins than ever, it follows that there are more former Twins around the majors than ever before.

A record 45 players who once played for Minnesota wore a different major league uniform in 2018. That’s ...

The manager gets the spotlight, but the front office runs the show now

It’s worth noting that the World Series, which opens Tuesday night at Fenway Park in Boston, features two managers who had never held the position until they accepted the jobs they currently have. Dave Roberts was a coach with the San Diego Padres when the Los Angeles Dodgers hired him the winter before the 2016 season. His performance thus far: three division titles, back-to-back National League pennants - with a world championship still a possibility.

Alex Cora was a coach when the Houston ...

Escobar, D-backs agree to three-year deal

The D-backs made their first move of the offseason Monday by signing Eduardo Escobar to a three-year contract worth $21 million.

The deal puts a quality player under contract for a reasonable price. What it does not do, however, is answer the question of whether the D-backs plan on competing in 2019 or if they instead will trade some of their veterans and retool.

“I would ask and caution not to read into either side of those things, as much as I know fans are definitely going to want to do ...

Do the Nationals need to go modern and develop a hybrid reliever? - The Washington Post

It’s not new. Teams have used multi-inning relievers in the past. I’m just waiting until they move to four-man rotations with guys throwing 75-85 pitches per start.

But as the Nationals consider potential improvements to their pitching staff next season, might it make sense to try to develop a Josh Hader-esque reliever, the kind that can go multiple shutdown innings in big spots, the kind that mollifies the pain of a short start? Might they have the arms to fill such a role on their roster ...

Davidson Aiming To Be Legitimate Bullpen Option

White Sox infielder/designated hitter Matt Davidson has added serious pitching work to his training this winter, with the goal of becoming the next two-way player in baseball. The White Sox have given Davidson the freedom to embark on this endeavor and plan to assess the situation throughout the offseason, as Davidson is headquartered near their complex in Arizona.

“I grew up as a pitcher,” Davidson said. “I didn’t really play a position full time until my junior year. I was a ...

“We’re deep, we’re versatile, and more and more in the modern era, that’s real important,” Dodgers president Stan Kasten told The New York Times after Game 7. “The last couple of years, that’s how we’ve worked, depth and versatility, using not just the 25-man roster but the 40-man roster. A lot of teams do the same thing, but a lot of breaks went our way.”

Yankees mull Manny Machado, free agents, more

Starting pitching
Cashman said that seeking starting pitching will be a “focus point.” There are vacancies to be filled, with J.A. Happ and CC Sabathia eligible for free agency, and the club open-minded toward moving Sonny Gray in a trade. Patrick Corbin is believed to be among the Yankees’ top targets and has made no secret of his desire to wear pinstripes. The left-hander would probably fall behind Luis Severino and Masahiro Tanaka as a solid mid-rotation starter, albeit one who could be ...

OTP 2018 OCT 22: Meet the New York Teenager Who Created the ‘Mets Are a Good Team’ Super PAC

The FEC’s paperwork made it appear like the work of one person, someone named Ben Aybar. He’d listed himself as the chairman, treasurer, and custodian of records. The headquarters was a residential address in the suburbs of New York City, and the organization’s listed preferred bank was nearby. There weren’t any of the typical signs of organized activity—there weren’t multiple people involved, there weren’t any office buildings or P.O. Boxes, the headquarters and bank were in the ...

On paper, Ng very much fits the mold of what the Mets are believed to be looking for. She is a baseball lifer after graduating from the University of Chicago, where she played softball. Ng joined the White Sox’s front office in 1990 and is said to be adept at blending new-school analytics with old-school scouting. She even spent part of her childhood in Queens.
Currently, Ng oversees all of MLB’s international operations — an arena ripe with corruption that the league has been trying to ...

Speier:How the Red Sox beat baseball’s best pitching staff

Boston Globe articles appear to be behind a paywall, but the site allows a few free articles. This is a pretty interesting look at what Boston’s scouting turned up, with help from ex-Astros (Cora and bullpen coach Craig Bjornson:

The Red Sox had a feel for how the Astros would attack – helped not just by ample video and heatmap data but also by input from Cora (last year’s Astros bench coach) and bullpen coach Craig Bjornson, who had worked in the same role with Houston in 2017 and thus ...
