Something Special About First Workout for New Texas Manager

Chris Woodward thinks long-term and appreciates the everyday grind of the game, having been a utility infielder over a dozen seasons and serving as a third base coach in the World Series each of the past two years.

Still, Woodward allowed himself to consider where he had come from to being a first-time manager when the Texas Rangers pitchers and catchers held their first workout of spring training Wednesday.

“There’s something special about it. To think, just kind of go back to my career, and ...

Biometric scanning is coming to the ballpark. It’s a really bad idea.

A consideration of new approaches in baseball ticketing- anyone here with knowledge on the subject matter that can offer feedback on this?

Doug Fister retires

The agent of pitcher Doug Fister, Page Odle, told MLB.com’s Jon Morosi that his client is retiring. Odle said, “”He’s been contemplating this for a couple months. The main reason is that he wants to start a new chapter in his life. This is 100 percent family driven. He’s really excited about being a dad and husband. He’s very much a family-oriented guy.”

MLB notebook: Phillies extend Nola, announce Arrieta surgery

Philadelphia Phillies pitchers made news on Wednesday, with the announcements that Aaron Nola agreed to a four-year contract extension and Jake Arrieta underwent pre-spring training surgery on his left knee.

Terms of Nola’s contract were not released, but ESPN and The Athletic placed the value at $45 million. Nola, 25, had been scheduled for an arbitration hearing this week.

Meanwhile, Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said Arrieta’s surgery, performed a few weeks ago, repaired a meniscus ...

Twelve years later, Matt Harvey is an Angel trying to earn his way back

TEMPE, Ariz. — There is a place where he may be proud and regretful, where today is just going to have to be better than yesterday and so is just going to have to be good enough, where that guy he knew from way back when remains a work in progress, where that pitcher from the same time remains possible.

Where, in a way, he can be 18 again.

“I wish,” said Matt Harvey, for the first time wearing the colors of the team that drafted him 12 years ago. He smiled.

Andrew Friedman says Dodgers have chance to be ‘an elite team’

GLENDALE, Ariz.—The Los Angeles Dodgers are projected to win 90-plus games and a division title for a seventh consecutive season, yet the prevailing narrative surrounding them has focused mostly on the moves they failed to make over the winter. Specifically that they didn’t sign Bryce Harper, didn’t acquire J.T. Realmuto and didn’t trade for Corey Kluber.

Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, knows this well.

He basically hears about it every morning.

“You can go to ...

Brewers trying to keep rival Cubs fans out of Miller Park again

The Milwaukee Brewers have made it clear: They would prefer the least amount of Chicago Cubs fans to fill Miller Park as possible.

In a statement released Wednesday, the Brewers announced presale tickets for their 10 home dates against the Cubs, tickets that will only initially be made available to residents of Wisconsin.

“If last season’s Game 163 taught us anything, it’s that every single game matters - especially in a rivalry like this. And, while we don’t dislike all Cubs fans, we just ...

Astros’ Alex Bregman Says There’s ‘No Other City’ He’d Rather Beat Than Boston

There appears to be a rivalry brewing between the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros. Or, at the very least, there’s a rivalry brewing between Astros third baseman Alex Bregman and the city of Boston.

Apparently, Red Sox fans have no love loss for Bregman, who was a focal point of the American League Championship Series between Houston and the Red Sox, as his social media antics riled up not only inhabitants of New England but those inside the Red Sox organization, too.

So when the Red Sox ...

CC Sabathia has chance to bolster Hall of Fame case before retiring after 2019 season

New York Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia is expected to announce on Saturday that the upcoming season will be his last, but he still has plenty on the line in 2019.

Not only are the Yankees odds-on favorite to win the World Series, but on the cusp of 3,000 career strikeouts, Sabathia has a chance to pad his resume for a chance at induction into the Hall of Fame.

Baseball is a game of numbers, and boy do people love round numbers. While he won’t have a chance at 300 wins – unless he ...

From a Church in Philadelphia, Sports Reference Informs the World

The ubiquitous Sports Reference family of websites — Baseball-Reference.com, Basketball- Reference.com, Pro-Football-Reference.com, Hockey-Reference.com, and so on — are some of the most popular sports almanacs on the internet.

They draw users of all kinds, from people casually searching for a trivia answer to owners of professional teams. Aided by an overhaul of its mobile website, Sports Reference’s founder and president, Sean Forman, said the group of sites drew one billion page views ...

The Cobra Playlist: Dave Parker on Parkinson’s and the Music of His Life

Dealing with Parkinson’s disease is tougher than handling a Nolan Ryan fastball on a chilly April evening. The most simple tasks become a chore. I need to think twice before lifting my grandchild in the air or even carrying her school bag to make the bus stop on time. My golf swing lacks the power of someone my age and even working with young baseball players can be a challenge. There are nights I’ll be watching a game, and my body reminds me that I have the disease. When this happens, I ...

End of free Cubs games on local TV: Team partners with Sinclair to launch regional sports network in 2020

The Chicago Cubs are teaming with Sinclair Broadcast Group to launch a regional sports network in February 2020 that will become the exclusive television home of the Cubs.
The Marquee Sports Network will air the full regular season schedule, expanded pregame and postgame coverage, classic broadcasts from the archives and other local sports programming.

It marks the end of more than 70 years of over-the-air broadcasts for the Cubs, and the beginning of an ambitious endeavor to sell cable and ...

Detroit Tigers’ Casey Mize impresses with new-age ideas, old-school ethic

Mize, for one, is a huge believer in this technology. In fact, it led him to change the shape and grip of his slider.

“It’s the most efficient way to develop a pitch,” he said. “The numbers are right there in front of you. You can see the flight of the ball, the path of the ball. You know how it’s playing off your other pitches. With the slow-motion cameras, you can see the last thing the ball touches out of my hand.”

Mize, after studying the spin axis and release of his slider ...

Baseball is back — except for the 100 or so remaining free agents. Is this the new normal? - Chicago Tribune

One of the *fixes* I’ve seen mentioned is players getting to free agency sooner. That might help a relatively small percentage of players. It will only make things worse for the middle of the road players. Having more of them on the market won’t drive up their salaries.

Asked whether it’s a problem for MLB to have so many free agents unsigned as spring training begins, Epstein predicted things would be “re-ordered” by the time the next collective bargaining agreement is agreed upon by MLB ...

In slow market, Adam Jones’ free agency confounds former Orioles teammates: ‘Unfortunately, it’s where we’re at’ - Baltimore Sun

Adam Jones is one of my favorite players. From what I’ve read the reason he isn’t signed is that he’s holding out for a salary based on the player he was, rather than accepting a salary for the player he is. I hope he changes his mind.

“Unfortunately, it’s where we’re at,” outfielder/designated hitter Mark Trumbo said. “You’d think somebody with that kind of bulk and track record, especially with how much he brings in addition to the baseball side of it — it is kind of hard to wrap your head ...

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — One day in early November, Buster Posey felt his body respond more normally again as he rehabilitated from season-ending hip surgery. Working out his lower half with a 15-pound dumbbell in his left hand he leaned forward for a one-legged Russian Dead Lift. Joe Maddon explains ‘own it now’ slogan for 2019 Cubs

MESA, Ariz. - Joe Maddon had an extra month to work out his standard slogan for the new year ahead, but he probably didn’t need it.

Maddon’s phrase for 2019 - “own it now” - could’ve been hatched in mid-October and that’s not at all critiquing the slogan. It’s just that the main narrative around the Cubs hasn’t changed since the first hour of the offseason when stunned players hung around at their lockers and talked about the lack of urgency at times throughout the season.

The Cubs’ main ...

Teams will wear ‘MLB 150’ patch on uniforms this year

Major League Baseball evolved more than it was invented, but generally everyone agrees on 1869 as the date after which baseball was a truly professional pursuit. That was when the Cincinnati Red Stockings became the first all-salaried baseball team. Prior to that teams paid some players, but not all, and majority professional teams would often play fully amateur clubs on the regular.

1869 was 150 years ago and, since people like numbers that are divisible by 5, 10, and 25, Major League ...

Giants have been talking with Cameron Maybin

ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that the Giants have had contract discussions with free agent outfielder Cameron Maybin. Olney notes that adding Maybin would give the Giants a safety net in center field and would pair well with the left-handed-hitting Steven Duggar.

Exactly the sort of free agent the Giants have historically grossly overpaid for!
