Petchesky: Study: Mets Fans Bad At English

Shut up, you moran.

The study (via the Wall Street Journal) is highly unscientific and for entertainment purposes only, but oh how entertaining it is. The company proofread 150 comments from articles on each of the 30 teams’ official websites, all at least 50 words long, and counted up the spelling and grammar mistakes per 100 words. And while baseball fans as a whole are stronger than their football counterparts, things still get pretty rough, especially in the Northeast.

Pittsburgh Press, June 23, 1915:

Ban Johnson has wired George Sisler, Michigan’s star pitcher, who wants to play for his former college coach, Branch Rickey, that he cannot play with the St. Louis Browns. Meet the French teenager trying to become the first woman in MLB

Major League Baseball is one step closer to having its first female player. On Sunday, 16-year-old French teenager Melissa Mayeux became the first known female to be added to MLB’s international registration list.

That means Mayeux is eligible to be signed by a club during the next international signing period, which begins July 2.

While anyone can attempt to register for the list, only players who have the potential to be signed actually make the cut. Even if Mayeux isn’t signed by a club, ...

Former player and MLB Net Analyst Darryl Hamilton found dead in apparent murder-suicide

Former Major League Baseball player and MLB Network analyst Darryl Hamilton has been found dead, along with one other, in a suburban home outside Houston.

The bodies of Hamilton, 50, and Monica Jordan, 44, were found about 4:45 p.m. Sunday inside the house in the 11500 block of Island Breeze, according to the Pearland Police Department.

Police said officers were sent to the home on an emergency call about a disturbance. When they arrived, they found the body of Hamilton near the front entry ...

Pete Rose bet on baseball as a player.

Yes, he admitted in 2004, after almost 15 years of denials, he had placed bets on baseball, but he insisted it was only as a manager.

But new documents obtained by Outside the Lines indicate Rose bet extensively on baseball—and on the Cincinnati Reds—as he racked up the last hits of a record-smashing career in 1986. The documents go beyond the evidence presented in the 1989 Dowd report that led to Rose’s banishment and provide the first written record that Rose bet while he was still on the ...

ESPN: Entries in long-hidden notebook show Pete Rose bet on baseball as player

For analysis on this, let’s turn to FOX analyst Pete Rose.

For 26 years, Pete Rose has kept to one story: He never bet on baseball while he was a player.

Yes, he admitted in 2004, after almost 15 years of denials, he had placed bets on baseball, but he insisted it was only as a manager.

A New Way to Look at Sample Size

Our aim in this project is to extend the understanding of reliability and show a more complete picture of how additional plate appearances affect the reliability value of everyday stats for both batters and pitchers. We want to reinforce the idea that reliability is a spectrum, not a single point. There is no single point at which you can say a stat has stabilized. We also want to use the concept of reliability to regress toward the mean and to make confidence bands that give a better idea of a ...

Female French teen is first woman added to international registration list

Melissa Mayeux, a shortstop on the French U-18 junior national team, became the first known female baseball player to be added to MLB’s international registration list, which means she will be eligible to be signed by a Major League club on July 2.
International prospects, Mayeux included, are typically added to the international registration list at MLB-sanctioned events after verifying their dates of birth and citizenship; while anyone can technically be added to the list, only those who have ...

Milwaukee Journal, June 22, 1915:

Jack Holland, owner of the St. Joseph baseball club, and Second Baseman Page of the same club were rushed by a mob of 300 fans yesterday after Page assaulted Umpire Vansickle, striking him behind the ear and felling him against a turnstile. A squad of police rescued Holland and Page, taking them to the police station for safety. The trouble started when Page was ordered out of the game for disputing a decision. Team president Pat Gillick says his replacement likely will be hired soon

Pat Gillick on the state of the Phillies.

“It’s sort of like what they do at private schools,” Gillick told the Inquirer. “They hire a headmaster a year ahead of time. I’m working with ownership and we’ve got some people under consideration. I think probably it’s going to happen somewhere in the not-too-distant future.”

Gillick said the intent is to give his eventual replacement time to observe the remainder of the season and then make decisions concerning general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., ...

The Brewers are sellers. Will anyone buy?

Testing the limits of supply-side economics:

For years, Melvin put together slugging lineups to take advantage of hitter-friendly Miller Park. But the Brewers no longer hit home runs with regularity, and with a terrible OBP they don’t get enough runners on base to sustain rallies.

....

Obvious trade candidates are veterans on the last years of their contracts with big salaries, such as third baseman Aramis Ramirez ($14 million), Lohse ($11 million) and reliever Jonathan Broxton ($9 ...
