Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-3-2018

Lake County Times, July 3, 1918:

Owner Comiskey of the Chicago White Sox recently ordered Pitcher Williams and Catcher Lynn out of his ball park when he learned that they had decided to accept lucrative offers from the Steel league.

“There is no room on my ball club for players who wish to esxape the army draft by entering the employ of shipbuilding concerns and steel mills,” said the irate Commy the other day. “Players like Scott and Faber, who have enlisted in the army and navy, respectively, ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-2-2018

Toledo News-Bee, July 2, 1918:

Hap Felsch jumped the Champion White Sox on Monday just after getting his monthly pay check and went to his home in Milwaukee, where he intends working for a gas company, and plans to play semipro ball on the side. It is suspected Felsch is planning to go to the “Steal League.”

Later in the summer, Felsch expressed an interest in returning to baseball, for any team other than the White Sox. Comiskey should have listened.

Angels encouraged by Shohei Ohtani’s first days of batting practice

“They were very happy with how he swung the bat,” Scioscia said, referring to the trainers and staff who watched Ohtani hit. Scioscia said Ohtani had five or six rounds of batting practice against a coach on each day.

Scioscia said Ohtani could be ready to face an actual pitcher in a simulated game-type setting this weekend. The Angels could bring a minor league pitcher to Anaheim to face Ohtani, although they’d want to be careful that it wasn’t someone so raw as to risk hitting him ...

A look back at the ‘Grand Hatching’ of the San Diego Chicken

Embroiled in a legal battle with local rock station KGB over the rights to his creation, [Ted] Giannoulas put together one of the most publicized media stunts of the late 1970s. He called it the “Grand Hatching,” set for June 29, 1979, at a sold-out Jack Murphy Stadium to end his chicken persona’s brief absence from San Diego Padres games.

Giannoulas brokered a deal with the Major League Baseball team. The Padres paid him $1.50 a ticket above their average attendance, and by the end of the ...

Jerry Kelly maintains U.S. Senior Open lead; John Smoltz misses cut after 85-77

There’s something to be said for honesty, at least…..

• Even John Smoltz got into the mix. The Hall of Fame pitcher chipped in from the rough near the 12th green for a birdie as part of a sweet ending to the his fantasy-camp stay with the world’s best senior golfers. He followed his opening-day 85 with a 77.

“People think this is easier than it is. They think they can hit those shots,” Smoltz said. “These are the best in the world, but it brought me to my humbled knees.”

A field of broken dreams: Homestead may demolish its ill-fated sliver of MLB history

The Homestead baseball stadium has been a lot of things in its time— a practice field for striking major-leaguers, a clandestine clubhouse for kids, a place where petty criminals were booked and held before moving to county jail, but mostly, a bit of an embarrassing money-suck for the city. Now, Homestead is considering bids to demolish the aging structure, a move that could seal the fate of one man’s 30-year old dream that never came true.

The 2018 Free-Agent Class No Longer Looks Poised to Change Baseball - The Ringer

How much money will he get?

Harper, approaching his 26th birthday, has sandwiched two useful but far-from-spectacular seasons (2016 and 2018) around a productive but injury-curtailed 2017, and 2015 remains the sole season in which he reached five FanGraphs WAR. Subsequent analysis attached a caveat to that campaign too, revealing that Harper’s results had far exceeded the stats that his batted balls seemed to dictate. For years, fans and media members speculated that Harper would be bound for ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-29-2018

Washington Times, June 29, 1918:

Babe Ruth, the ponderous pitcher-gardener with the Boston Red Sox, is likely to shatter the American League’s home run record this season. All that is necessary is that Ed Barrow keep the Baltimorean in the lineup. Babe will see to the rest of it.

If there is one thing Babe Ruth loves, it is the sound of the leather going off his own bat, headed for walls that are far away. And, so much is he in love with this sound that he mauls and pummels the pill most ...

Los Angeles Herald, June 28, 1918:

The Tigers and the Oaks played the fastest game of the year at Oakland yesterday, completing their game in 57 minutes…Ken Penner wants it distinctly understood that his first name is not Herb. His mother told him the other day that if she wanted him called “Herbie” she would have had him christened that way.

Making that announcement seems like the quickest way to get people to call you Herbie.

Tigers Pitching Coach Chris Bosio fired for “insensitive comments”

Detroit Tigers pitching coach Chris Bosio was fired for “insensitive comments” to a team employee per the article.  Why is this person not described as a co-worker?  Because Bosio is in the dugout and this person is not?  And Bosio is the same clown, I mean person, who insinuated that Eric Thames was using PEDs when Thames was on a hot streak.

The Luke Heimlich case and why one baseball team’s pursuit is full of logical landmines

“The Royals, and particularly their general manager, Dayton Moore, see MLB and the platform it provides as a conduit to a greater purpose. Moore’s deep religious convictions guide the organization, and the significant consideration it’s given to signing Heimlich follows the axiom of hate the sin, love the sinner.”

The Story Of Shohei Ohtani’s Legendary BP Sessions, From Those Who Witnessed Them

ANAHEIM, Calif.—Three-time World Series champion and Angels hitting coach Eric Hinske burst into the clubhouse like a man possessed. Inside, the Angels relievers and a few other players, including Mike Trout, were decompressing before their May 8 game at the Rockies’ notoriously hitter-friendly ballpark.

“Oh my God,” Hinske said, to no one in particular. “That was the most ridiculous BP run I think I’ve ever seen in my life.”

The way Angels reliever Noe Ramirez tells the story ...

Ohtani ‘likely to return’ as hitter in ‘18

Baseball fans clamoring for the return of two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani may get their wish in the coming weeks, at least in a limited capacity.

Angels general manager Billy Eppler made an appearance on MLB Network Radio on Wednesday and told MLB.com’s Jim Duquette that Ohtani is “likely to return as a hitter no matter what” happens with the plasma-rich platelet (PRP) injection he received earlier this month for his ailing right elbow. Eppler added that the Angels took the PRP approach with the ...

Washington Herald, June 27, 1918:

Roger Bresnahan has been selected to succeed Fielder Jones as manager of the St. Louis Americans, it was reported [in Toledo yesterday].

Bresnahan left [Toledo] last week and is reported to be in conference with Phil Ball, owner of the St. Louis club.

I’m not sure what the Toledo Blade reported about this, but the News-Bee was pretty clear in reporting that they had no firm information on Bresnahan to St. Louis, and that Bresnahan had denied the rumor.

It ...

New York Evening World, June 26, 1918:

King George is learning to throw a baseball in preparation for his appearance at the game between American teams on July 4, when he will pitch out the first ball.

At the request of the King, Arlie Latham, a former big league player, who will umpire the Fourth of July game, sent the King a regulation baseball a few days ago. The next day Latham called at the Palace and gave the King a brief lesson as to how the baseball should be handled.

“Your Majesty, the ...

Easy to imagine the end of Sandy Alderson-Mickey Callaway regime

Monday’s 6-4 loss to the Pirates was the Mets’ seventh in a row and 14th in their last 15 home games. They are 31-45, which means they are 20-44 since an 11-1 start to Callaway’s rookie season as manager. The Marlins now have one more win than the Mets.

Much has been made of Callaway’s odd comments, such as when he said New York was a tougher place to play than Cleveland and seemed to suggest his players couldn’t handle it. He had another one on Monday, when he said of the Mets’ ...
