Baseball making big shift in defensive strategy | The Sacramento Bee

Meulens is blunt about his feelings on the shift.

“It should be illegal, really,” he said. “Why should there be a guy standing in (shallow) right field?”

Well, for a defense, because it works. Baseball Info Solutions calculates shifts saved 267 runs last season and already have saved 194 this year. But while it’s easy for defenses to reposition an infielder or two, Meulens argues, it’s not so easy for hitters to adjust.

“It’s hard for guys to change their swings on ...

Sunday Notes: Yonder, Yankees, Dodgers, Pitch Selection, more | FanGraphs Baseball

I asked Jason Motte the same question. The Rockies reliever began his professional career as a catcher, so he too knows what it feels like at each end of the 60-feet, six-inch pathway. With 13 seasons under his belt, the 34-year-old righty doesn’t dwell on results as much as he used to.

“When I was a hitter, I thought way too much,” said Motte. “Maybe that’s why I wasn’t very good? But are you more in control when you go out there and pitch? You are and you aren’t. At the end of ...

Yanks must have nearing cutoff date to buy out A-Rod, Teixeira | New York Post

The fans are cognizant of the results: a combined 11 homers, 38 RBIs, .595 OPS and a slash line of .199/.268/.327. Rodriguez and Teixeira are walking less (8.4 percent of plate appearances compared with 13.2 last year) and whiffing more (27.8/21.3), symbolic of pitchers fearing them less and challenging them more.

This would be no easy decision. A-Rod and Teixeira helped the 2009 Yanks win a title and have had brilliant careers — albeit in Rodriguez’s case tainted by PEDs. Then there is ...

Edinson Volquez may have just thrown the worst start of the modern era

Royals starter Edinson Volquez entered Friday night’s appearance against the Astros with a 106 ERA+—meaning, in the simplest terms, he’d been an above-average pitcher on the season when things like his ballpark and the league as a whole were taken under consideration. Volquez then had one of the worst starts in big-league history, thus ensuring that was no longer the case.
Not only was Volquez lifted after recording just three outs—he failed to get anyone out in the second inning—but he yielded ...

Heyman: 8 dream trade scenarios

1. Aroldis Chapman to the Nats for Trea Turner. The Yankees will wait a month to see if they will get serious about a sale for the first time in nearly three decades. But if they do hold one, there will be a feeding frenzy over their two veteran closers, two of the very best in the game. The Nats could have used late-inning fortification even before Jonathan Papelbon went down with an intercostal injury, and Nats manager Dusty Baker is said to love Chapman from their Reds days together. Turner ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-24-2016

Bismarck Daily Tribune, June 24, 1916:

Several years ago while pitching for the Boston Red Sox, [Fred] Anderson was studying dentistry on the side. Finally he decided to give up baseball and follow his other profession. He bought out the practice of an old tooth carpenter down in Georgia and hit 1.000 in the prosperity league.

Finally his health broke under the strain. A physician advised him to take a long rest and be outdoors as much as possible. The Federals, just starting up, offered an ...

Say what you will, but the Orioles are doing something right | FOX Sports

Can they really get much for him with his injury history?

Which raises the question: How far would the Orioles go to upgrade? Would they trade right-hander Dylan Bundy, whom they drafted fourth overall in 2011 and who is finally healthy and contributing as a reliever after missing most of the previous three seasons with injuries?

Sandy Springs erupts over ‘nightmare’ plan to run Braves traffic through its streets

Cobb County’s plan for handling traffic generated by the Atlanta Braves next year is to get fans off I-285 and onto surface streets in adjacent communities.

The mayor and city council of Sandy Springs learned of this for the first time on Tuesday. They are not pleased. ...

The news account quotes a “visibly angry” Mayor Rusty Paul as calling the Cobb plan “our nightmare.” The mayor also said he had made calls to ranking Cobb officials to discuss traffic planning, but had never heard ...

Danny Espinosa, Trea Turner, and the Value of Patience | FanGraphs Baseball

I’ve watched Espinosa a number of times over the years. He’s a useful player. I watched Trea Turner up close last night at Pawtucket. After the Super Two cutoff, the Nationals will be putting an inferior shortstop on the field if they stick with Espinosa.

Danny Espinosa is not a star, and maybe Trea Turner will turn into one. But for 2016, the Nationals have correctly identified that Espinosa as their starting shortstop may very well be their best option, and not just their best option until the ...

News 8 analysis: Arlington could give away millions in stadium deal | WFAA.com

When $500 million isn’t enough.

City of Arlington officials have touted a “50-50” private-public partnership to build a proposed $1 billion retractable roof stadium for the Texas Rangers.

A WFAA-TV investigation, however, has found taxpayers may instead pick up to 80 percent of the tab, which amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars more than initially promised by city leaders.

Last month, the Arlington City Council unanimously approved a “Master Agreement” to ask voters to extend ...

Texas Rangers: Colby Lewis to miss two months; Rangers place Derek Holland on disabled list | SportsDay

Yup, that’s a bad day.

The Rangers’ depth in starting pitching will be put to the test after the loss of two front-line pitchers on Wednesday.
Right-hander Colby Lewis, a lead figure on the club, will not throw for four weeks because of a strained lat muscle in the right shoulder and probably will land on the 60-day disabled list. Left-hander Derek Holland went on the 15-day disabled list because of shoulder inflammation.

With right-hander Yu Darvish already on the disabled list, the Rangers ...
