1. Kansas City Royals (9 overall)
The Royals had the second-biggest leap in last year’s Ultimate Standings, and now, after winning the World Series last fall, they climb into the top 10 as the highest-ranked MLB team. Key injuries to Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon’s bad year wrecked the team’s playoff hopes, but Kansas City remained baseball-crazy, with the highest local TV ratings in the sport….
27. New York Yankees (100 overall)
The Yankees think of themselves as the ...
South Bend News-Times, October 21, 1916:
Sunday baseball may be legalized in New York state before the opening of the 1917 season. A number of state senators and congressmen from the metropolitan district will champion this cause at the next meeting of the legislature.
It was at the suggestion of certain prominent politicians that the patronage of the Brooklyn National league club was sounded on the matter last summer. The attitude of Brooklyn, it is believed, will prove beyond a doubt to the ...
If you are going down the replay rabbit hole, why not have cameras on the umpires so you can see their perspectives on the play? They are supposed to get into the best position to see the play.

“We know the media and fans are going to be biased about winning tonight’s game,” Kasten said. “That is not a productive guiding vision for building a franchise. … If you only have short-term goals, you cannot have sustained long-term success.”
So, the Dodgers protected Game 4 starter Urias and their now best player Seager, and used the next level of prospects to get Game 3 winner Rich Hill plus Josh Reddick. The combination had them in as good a position to win that first title ...

It was a good, tense game until it wasn’t. After back-to-back shutouts, the Chicago Cubs have now scored 18 runs the past two games of the National League Championship Series after beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-4 in Game 5 on Thursday. The series heads back to Wrigley Field, and we all know what’s at stake.
at the end you will see why I posted this.

While the current labor agreement between Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association is set to expire in early December, don’t expect a strike or lockout to occur, that according to sources who would not speak on record but are close to the details.
As to when the deal may be announced, it would benefit both the league and union to have it occur prior to free agency, which starts shortly after the end of the World Series on Nov. 2nd.
The current five-year CBA was reached on Nov. ...
Now two of the biggest cogs in the lineup, right fielder Jose Bautista and first baseman Edwin Encarnacion, seem likely to leave as free agents in the offseason. Bautista has hit 265 home runs in his nine seasons with the Blue Jays while Encarnacion has 239 homers in eight years.
The duo helped the Blue Jays end a 22-year playoff drought last year.
“Eddie and Jose really helped put this team back on the map again with what they’ve accomplished,” said Gibbons, who completed the fourth ...

Yankee Owners Planning To Start Work on Their New Park by Next Spring
Nobody is more anxious to begin the erection of a new ball park than are [Yankees owners] Capt. Huston and Col. Ruppert, but the problem that is besetting them is location. They have had under consideration an excellent place in Long Island City, on the other end of the Queensboro Bridge, but there is a doubt as to whether it would be advisable to get off Manhattan Island.
The decision on ...
I don’t get the attachment. It’s an advertisement, not a landmark.
“What if changing the location improves visibility? How do we allow for the serendipity of that approach?” said Rosanne Foley, executive director of the Boston Landmarks Commission.

Leon had a great season. I’m still having trouble buying into having him as the Red Sox starter. I still think a Swihart/Vazquez combo (with Swihart also getting some games in the outfield) is there long-term answer behind the plate.
This is a tough choice on Gallo. He did appear to slide this season. It’s first base, though. Can’t the Rangers pull a Red Sox move from 2003? Acquire a couple of 1B AAA talents to compete with Gallo for the job?
This may be the most difficult decision because I’m not sure Gallo can demonstrate enough progress, regardless of his results in Venezuela, to earn the job. I’m also not sure if his value is high enough to allow him to front a deal for a middle-of-the-rotation (or better) pitcher, which ...

Does he still have credibility with other GMs?
It’s not unreasonable for managers to expect to get 90-100 innings from a reliever. He might have to work in an extra off day once in a while but it’s doable. Limiting your most effective pitcher to 60 innings isn’t maximizing his value.
“If you watch the way (Indians manager Terry) Francona is using Miller, that’s exactly what he is doing. He’s using those off days to his advantage,” Britton said. “But, through the course of a regular season, we just don’t get those off days. It’s ...

19th century infielder Arthur Irwin tells the funniest baseball story he knows, Topeka State Journal, October 19, 1916:
“Frank Bonner, once a big league star, was at bat, with a fellow named Thomas pitching. Thomas was bald headed but not proud about it, so he wore a wig. Bonner knew nothing about the dome disguise.
“Frank picked out one of Thomas’s twisters and drove it right back at him. The ball smashed Thomas on the upper division of his forehead and promptly knocked off Thomas’s cap and ...
This sclerotic management technique was the unwitting handiwork of Jerome Holtzman, a sportswriter who devised a statistic in 1960 that he called a “save” in order to measure the impact of shut-down relievers. Roughly speaking, it meant entering with a lead of three or fewer runs and finishing the game without relinquishing it, though there were a few additional wrinkles. The number took decades to catch on, and for most of the 1970s and 1980s, teams wisely deployed “fireman” relievers ...
He carved them up with curveballs.
“It’s interesting,” Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts said. “Of the starts I’ve seen him this year, that wasn’t his best stuff. I think that curveball command wasn’t as I know he would like it. But that just shows he goes out there and competes.
“His preparedness, his guts really kept those guys at bay.”

When Major League Baseball expanded its amateur draft to Puerto Rico in 1990, it had a catastrophic effects on the island’s baseball community. In 2007, the island’s Secretary of Sport, David Bernier, told Jesse Sanchez, “The investment in Puerto Rico is not a cost-effective one for Major League teams and has lost charm for the recruiter. This reality is substantiated by the decrease in numbers of players selected through the Draft and active in the Major Leagues…. This creates a domino ...

Tippett said the Red Sox are about a half-game behind their own 2016 projection, which he shared as a graph in a slideshow. The team appears headed for right around 90 wins, based on the graph.
Tippett sees a connection to the 2011 club that fell apart in the final month.
“I predicted to myself as I was putting the slides together that somebody would think I’m predicting a September collapse,” Tippett said. “I am not predicting another collapse in September.”
Tippett felt in the ...
