Yankees prospect Acevedo dies in car wreck

Yankees Minor Leaguer Sandy Acevedo was killed in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic on Saturday night, the team said. Acevedo was 18 years old.

Prior to their Sunday game against the Rays, the Yankees held a moment of silence in memory of the third baseman. Acevedo had not appeared in any Minor League games since signing with New York as an international free agent last July 6, his 18th birthday.

MLB.com’s David Adler cited a 2015 Scout.com interview in which Donny Rowland, New ...

Generate your own minor league baseball franchise!

‘s been over a year since we helped a professional baseball team choose the name “Hartford Yard Goats.” That was a fun time, but now we’re all kind of used to them. They’re just one creatively silly minor league team name out of dozens.

We need something fresh.

We need an entire alternate universe filled with new minor league teams.

Introducing the minor league baseball team name generator!

A Record Setting Five Koreans Debut in Major League Baseball

When most fans of Major League Baseball (MLB) think of players from the Pacific Rim, players imported from Japan’s professional league tend to come to mind. Whether it be Ichiro or for a period Dice K Matsuzaka, there have been a string of high profile players coming from Japan to the United States. That perception may be about to change. While more Japanese professionals have played in the major leagues, players from Korea are increasingly making their mark in MLB as well.

Because of the ...

Yasiel Puig crashed a high school prom after game in Colorado

Only to be thrown out by that stuffy Dean! I’LL GET YOU PUIG!

Los Angeles Dodgers star Yasiel Puig had a little time to kill on Saturday night after Kenta Maeda and company made short work of the Colorado Rockies. So he decided he would surprise some Denver area high school students by crashing their prom party.

True story.

Puig shocked the students from Chatfield High School in Littleton, Colo.— which is a suburb of Denver — a little before midnight. He even posed for pictures with ...

Founding Rules of ‘Base Ball’ Sell for $3.26 Million in Auction

Nothing about bat flips though.

“Laws of Base Ball” was put up for online bidding this month by SCP Auctions; the price paid was the most ever for a baseball document but below the $4.3 million paid in 2010 for James Naismith’s original 13 rules of basketball. The most expensive piece of sports memorabilia is a Babe Ruth jersey from 1920 that sold for $4.4 million in 2012.

“Laws,” which was written by Daniel Adams, who was known as Doc, established rules such as nine men on a side, ...

Walt Whitman, Baseball Reporter

America’s poet expounded on America’s game in this little-known June 18, 1858 editorial from the Brooklyn Daily Times. But these were not Whitman’s only published words on the national pastime: in the 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass appears the line “Upon the race-course, or enjoying picnics or a good game of base-ball”; and in the Brooklyn Eagle of July 23, 1846 (only one month after the Knickerbockers’ purported first match game), he wrote: “In our sun-down perambulations, ...

With ‘no changes’ in MRI, Orioles hope Yovani Gallardo returns in about 4 weeks - Baltimore Sun

A new MRI on Gallardo’s ailing right shoulder Sunday showed “no changes” from the MRI taken two months ago during Gallardo’s club physical, before the Orioles signed him in February, according to an industry source.

Gallardo left Friday’s game in Kansas City after just two innings after feeling discomfort in his shoulder and was placed on the DL before Saturday’s game against the Royals, marking the first time in parts of 10 major league seasons that he has gone on the DL with an arm-related ...

Yadier Molina points out suspicious man with binoculars in Padres’ center-field camera well

Not cool to “hack” into the Cardinals signs like that!

But the practice of sign-stealing goes from an innocent and understandable part of on-field play to a weirder and more concerning competitive advantage if and when teams incorporate agents and technologies beyond the diamond to figure out what their opponents are planning. The Toronto Blue Jays have long been dogged by allegations of a mysterious man in white clothing — the Man in White — who sits in center field at the Rogers Centre ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-25-2016

New York Evening World, April 25, 1916:

Baseball statisticians have been conspicuously negligent in failing to tabulate whether left or right handed umpires are hit the hardest.

Touché. That hits a bit close to home, old-timey people. (I should mention that the “Answers to Queeries” below the linked blurb gave me a chuckle or two.)

Rays notebook: Sternberg lauds Steinbrenner Field renovations | TBO.com and The Tampa Tribune

I am shocked that an owner of sports team would be in favor of tax dollars being put into the pockets of another owner.

Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg was asked Sunday for his thoughts on the $40 million approved by the Hillsborough County commissioners for renovations to George M. Steinbrenner Field, the spring home of the Yankees.

“Any money going toward baseball in Florida is fine by me,” he said. “It’s about the sport. It’s good for the spot. It shows that Hillsborough is ...

Orioles notes: Hyun Soo Kim more aggressive at plate; Tyler Wilson to start Thursday - Baltimore Sun

“This is a guy who walked 100-plus times in Korea last year, and I think he’s kind of seeing that there’s a little more attack mode here,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “He was telling me that six or seven out of 10 pitches he sees over there are breaking balls. And because of his reputation over there, guys pitched him kind of like how you see them pitch some of our guys when they’re swinging the bats. So it was tough for him initially when guys were really attacking him ...

OTP 2016 April 25: Forget politics, baseball season in full gear

We all have our ways of marking the seasons. I know it’s spring when in early April I start my morning by skipping The Washington Post front page and going right to the sports section. It’s not until I’ve fully savored the baseball box scores that I resignedly turn to politics.

WaPo - Twins and Nats Combine for 16-innings of Wackiness

Sunday’s game had everything a game could offer, from dramatic highs to head-shaking oddities. Bench coach Chris Speier, first base coach Davey Lopes and Baker, in his 21st season as a manager, have seen thousands of games combined, and the three agreed this was the wildest game they had been a part of.

It was definitely not the cleanest game ever played, but there were so many uncommon events that this one will be remembered for quite some time.

Arrieta can join these six pitchers who threw two no-hitters in one season

The game was historic before Johnny Vander Meer even threw a pitch. It was the first regular season game played under lights at Ebbets Field. The game was preceded by great fanfare. There was a fife and drum corps that marched on the field, a parade of local politicians and officials of the power company who had installed the lights, which at the time were the most powerful lighting system at any sporting venue. Olympic champion Jesse Owens performed in a series of sprinting competitions that ...

NYT - What Happens When Baseball-Stats Nerds Run a Pro Team?

Sam Miller:

IN 2015, the Sonoma Stompers, the team with one of the lowest payrolls in the Pacific Association, a professional baseball league near San Francisco, did something desperate: It handed its baseball-operations department to a couple of stat-savvy writers with no baseball-management experience, Ben Lindbergh and me.

AP: Cubs fan says arrest on field after no hitter was ‘worth it’

America!

Dylan Cressy tells The Chicago Tribune he handed his wallet and phone to a friend and scouted his route before the last out was called Thursday night in Cincinnati.

The 22-year-old Indiana University student then jumped over a railing, ran past an officer and began jumping up and down with Cubs players. Cressy patted Arrieta on the head before an officer dragged him away. He was charged with criminal trespass.

Cressy describes the game as “pure joy.”

His father wasn’t thrilled ...

Based on the smirk on Jeter’s face before he even tees off, he was either very confident or he knew they were pranking the masses. We’ll go with that latter, especially since there’s ...

New vision training has Joe Mauer back on track

For that resurgence, at least some of the credit must go to the discontinued, goggle-like glasses Nike sent him this offseason. Mauer brought them to spring training and showed them to hitting coach Tom Brunansky, who became an instant believer.

Young Twins hitters such as Byron Buxton and Eddie Rosario have been using the dark, wraparound glasses that include a small control switch on the frame to alter the speed at which the internal strobe light flashes. Korean slugger Byung Ho Park has ...

Mets’ Matt Harvey on start vs. Braves: ‘It’s still a work in progress’ - Mets Blog- ESPN

“Obviously throwing that many pitches in five innings is not ideal,” Harvey said. “My goal today was going out there and really trying to work on what we had worked on this past week. At times I was able to do that, and at times I fell out of that. I have to re-find that.

“When you get into a bad habit, it’s not going to be an immediate fix,” the 27-year-old continued. “The majority of the time out of the stretch I did feel better. Like I said, there’s still work to be done.”

Rays calling up top prospect LHP Blake Snell to start Saturday | Tampa Bay Times

The Rays are calling up top prospect LHP Blake Snell to make his major-league debut at Yankee Stadium on Saturday, the Tampa Bay Times has learned.

Snell is 1-1, 2,51 in three starts for Triple-A Durham, striking out 21 in 14 1/2 innings while allowing 15 hits and seven walks.

In the midst of playing nine straight, the Rays needed a fifth starter for Saturday. They had been planning on using RHP Erasmo Ramirez, but he was needed in relief on Thursday in Boston.

Braves may complain to union about condition of Turner Field infield

This would never happen with a new stadium!

Unhappy over the conditions of the Turner Field infield, Atlanta Braves players are considering contacting the players’ union to see if they can pressure their own club to make improvements, a source within the organization told ESPN on Thursday.

The source speculated that with the Braves leaving Turner Field for a new stadium after this season, the playing surface is not being treated with the same meticulous care as in the past and that the ...
