Baseball is realizing the value of taking a day off. | SportsonEarth.com : Lindsay Berra

Too tired to play? Major League players need to embrace the napping lifestyle.

“I think we’re getting more analytical about this and asking ourselves how we can preserve these players over the course of a season,” says long-time Dodgers trainer Stan Conte. “If a guy does great playing four games in a row but doesn’t do well on the fifth day, why are we playing him when we have a fresh guy on the bench who could be better? I think we definitely see a decrease in performance when people get ...

Posnanski: How do you solve a problem like Dalkowski?

One July 10, 1962, a minor miracle happened — though only a few people witnessed it. That was the day that Andy Warhol unveiled his odd Campbell Soup Cans work of art, though that wasn’t the miracle. A company called Telstar launched into space the first privately owned satellite. That wasn’t the miracle either.

No, that day, a somewhat clunky and generally unimposing young man with thick glasses took the mound for a minor-league baseball game in Elmira, N.Y. There were, by official ...

Randy Johnson throws out D-backs’ first pitch, could still probably strike you out

Soon-to-be-enshrined Hall of Famer Randy Johnson joined the Arizona Diamondbacks for opening day, taking the mound to throw out the first pitch.

Johnson stood taller than everyone around him on the field, them calmly walked out to the mound and zoomed his first pitch over the plate like he wasn’t even trying, like he was doing these things yesterday. Johnson, 51, hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2009 but obviously isn’t out of practice, even though he devotes his time to photography ...

Pitchfork at the Plate

Baseball season is under way, folks. To celebrate Opening Day, we polled Pitchfork staffers on the song they would choose if they were stepping up to the plate. Here are their responses.

I’d probably go with Funkadelic “One Nation Under a Groove”, but then I’m way too unhip to write for Pitchfork.

Bill James Mailbag - 4/7/15

Hey, Bill! Long-time Braves fan here (through some good years, and some VERY bad ones) and it really hurts to see the Braves trade away Craig Kimbrel. I know they claim to be “rebuilding,” but Kimbrel has been one of the best relievers in the game over the last couple of years, and he’s only 26. Wouldn’t you consider…that position, at least…to be already “built?”

It’s Upton. The signing of BJ Upton was utterly inexplicable, for reasons I should probably be polite enough not to outline, but ...

Masahiro Tanaka Abandons the Fastball | FanGraphs

Jeff Sullivan also tries to talk Yankees fans off the ledge.

And then, let’s think about Tanaka saying he’s changing his approach. The natural assumption is that Tanaka is trying to protect his own arm, and that’s sensible enough. Maybe he’s just trying to power down a little bit so as to reduce the stress on his elbow. But, alternatively, maybe Tanaka is just trying to be a little better? Dozens or hundreds of pitchers make adjustments in between seasons. When there aren’t injury ...

HACKING MASS Competition 2015

I did pretty well last year, although Travis Ishikawa didn’t end up getting the Pirates’ job and that hurt.

HACKING MASS, our competition to pick the least dangerous hitters and least effective pitchers in the majors, returns for the 2015 season!... You’ll have a full week to enter (the deadline is April 13, 2015, at midnight PST), but it’s easy to change players, so feel free to go all in on Freddy Galvis on the entry form today, then switch to Adeiny Hechavarria Monday morning…

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-7-2015

Bismarck Daily Tribune, April 7, 1915:

The oldest man connected with baseball has never seen a game.

He is David Riblet of Cleveland…If Riblet lives until March 13 he will be ninety years old. For the last four years he has been the watchman in the club rooms of the Naps.

“But I don’t ever expect to see a ball game,” adds Riblet. “You see, I’m one of those kind of men who always stick at their post, no matter what is happening near by them.”

Giants survive opener, have health concerns about rotation - San Francisco Chronicle

The Giants also will need to scramble for a Game 3 starter because Matt Cain had an MRI exam after feeling right-forearm tightness and was diagnosed with a strained flexor tendon.

Cain’s symptoms put a big scare into the Giants because they can reflect the most devastating pitching injury, a torn ulnar collateral ligament, which requires Tommy John surgery. Bochy said Cain has nothing like that and termed his injury “more like a two-week thing.”

“The trainers seem positive about ...

Tanaka doesn’t look like himself in opener; Didi doesn’t resemble Jeter

You thought it couldn’t get more over the top, did you?  You were wrong.

Beyond the loss, the game raised questions about 1) Tanaka, 2) the Yankees offense, and 3) the unfortunate sap charged with the impossible job to replace the great Derek Jeter…Though it’s hard to recall a major-league player attempting something quite so foolish, certainly not in his debut with a new team, nor while replacing the perfect player.

Dude’s on track to make a whole lotta money in this sport.

The Red Sox announced that they’ve signed right-hander Rick Porcello to a four-year contract extension that covers the 2016-19 seasons… Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports (on Twitter) that Porcello will be guaranteed a sizable $82.5MM over the four years. Per Speier, Porcello receives a $500K signing bonus before earning $20MM in 2016 and 2017 then $21MM in 2018 and 2019. Porcello was already slated to earn $12.5MM this season ...

Comeback detoured: Barry Zito accepts assignment to Triple-A Nashville

Zito was reassigned to the Oakland’s Triple-A team in Nashville. Zito, who hasn’t pitched in a big league game since 2013, had the right to refuse the assignment and pursue a major league job elsewhere. That thought, apparently, never even entered his mind.

“I’m gonna take it,” Zito said after the game. “Just continue to have fun pitching. That’s been my goal all along. I knew I was going to take a year off, and I was going to come back. I’ve been having a lot of fun this spring. I just want ...

The 43-year-old company won’t reveal the specific MLB team using its Urika-GD appliance — which costs anywhere from $100,000 to more than $1 million — due to privacy and competitive reasons. Nationals Park to host 2018 All-Star game

After a nearly 50-year absence, the MLB All-Star game is set to return to the nation’s capital.

Big news. There hasn’t been an MLB All-Star Game in Washington since the Senators hosted it at RFK Stadium in 1969.

This is also a promise made good by Commissioner Rob Manfred. In the coming years, Manfred is hoping to move toward a Super Bowl-type bidding process to determine which city and franchise hosts the All-Star game, but promised the event would come to Washington and Miami first. The ...

C.J. Wilson calls Angels statement on Josh Hamilton ‘kind of disheartening’

In fact, according to Pedro Moura of the Orange County Register, many of Hamilton’s teammates were left speechless yet undeniably affected when the statement played over the TV in the Angel Stadium weight room. Speechless, with the exception of C.J. Wilson, who has a friendship with Hamilton dating back to their time with the Texas Rangers.

When prompted for a response to Dipoto’s statement, Wilson didn’t have to say much to say a lot.

Wilson called it “kind of disheartening,” before ...

Alex Rodriguez gets a ‘warm hand’ from Yankees fans in first at-bat

Given the circumstances surrounding his situation, there was considerable intrigue over how the home crowd would react to seeing the 39-year-old back in pinstripes.

After being announced in the stadium, Rodriguez received a “warm hand,” according to announcer Michael Kay. Some fans even stood up and applauded as A-Rod stepped to the plate.

It’s worth noting that Rodriguez came out to Jay Z’s “Public Service Announcement.” The song begins with the line “allow me to reintroduce myself,” so it ...
