Injury to Burnett forced the Pirates’ hand to add pitcher | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

I hope Burnett can come back. He’s been a great story this year.

The addition of Happ, 32, whose first name is pronounced “Jay,” resulted directly from right elbow inflammation that sent A.J. Burnett to the 15-day disabled list Friday. Burnett made the All-Star team because of a 2.11 first-half ERA and 100 strikeouts in 119⅓ innings. In three starts since, he has allowed 32 hits and 18 earned runs in 16 innings. Huntington said Burnett informed the team of elbow pain after his start ...

Jim Callis: Ranking the best traded prospects | MLB.com

Click through for the rest of the list.

Plenty of words have been written about how the big leaguers will improve their new teams’ postseason chances, but not nearly as many about how the prospects will help their new clubs rebuild. Who were the best phenoms who changed addresses in the past eight days? We’ll rank the top 20:

1. Daniel Norris, LHP, Tigers (from Blue Jays in David Price trade)
Detroit parted with an ace left-hander in the present to get one for the future (not to mention two ...

Quality and quantity: Phillies’ return for Hamels looks solid | Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia

I’m not sold on Alfaro. If he’s the centerpiece of the deal, they may end up disappointed. Luckily they received a bunch of other bodies so somebody else can help make this deal a winner.

In this deal, the Phillies get quality and quantity. Alfaro will be viewed as the centerpiece. The Phillies have long been linked to him in their search for a difference-making young catcher. Alfaro has the potential to be exactly that. He has a power bat and a very strong arm, though he’s viewed as raw behind ...

With baseball’s 2nd-worst record, a lost season for Marlins

Master plan?

Hill said he’s hoping Marlins fans realize that the core of the team is still intact, and that trading Haren, Latos and Morse — as well as closer Steve Cishek, sent off to St. Louis last week — doesn’t represent a total reset of Miami’s master plan.

There Is Crying In Baseball: Wilmer Flores Hit A Walk Off Home Run!

Coming on the heels of the last couples days, this might be one of the best things I’ve seen in mid-season baseball. Is it dusty in here or is it just me?

The news spread like wildfire, and Flores got wind of it during Thursday’s game against the Padres. He began crying on the field, as he was about to leave the organization he’d been with since he was 16 years old.

And then the trade fell though. Awkward.

When he might have otherwise been in Milwaukee with new teammates, Flores started ...

Former Tigers pitcher Billy Pierce dies at 88

Billy Pierce, a seven-time All-Star pitcher who played in two World Series and retired after spending most of his 18 years in the majors with the Chicago White Sox, has died at the age of 88.

His family and the White Sox said Pierce died today, after a battle with gall bladder cancer.

RIP Billy. Led the league in ERA once and in complete games 3 times.  And 2 WS victories

A friend of mine at Princeton remembered him as a color man for the Chisox. He claimed he introduced himself as “Billy ...

With money and cutting-edge brilliance, Dodgers playing a game others can’t - Yahoo Sports

The Dodgers are very smart.

By absorbing about $15 million from the Marlins – the struggling Morse is owed $8 million next season – Los Angeles paid more than $40 million in contracts for which it has no use. This is where money is best spent, because swallowing others’ problematic contracts or fronting money for valuable players allows the Dodgers to ask for premium talent in return, and in Wood and Peraza, it got just that.

This Is The Refusal Roberto Clemente Got When He Asked For A Raise

Following his 1959 season—his fifth full year in the bigs—Hall-of-Fame outfielder Roberto Clemente asked for a raise, to $23,000. GM Joe L. Brown, architect of those great Pirates teams of the ‘60s and ‘70s, replied with a letter politely but firmly telling Clemente that he wasn’t good enough.

Apparently OBP was a thing in 1959…

Yankees remain in Kimbrel market; could active Astros join them? - CBSSports.com

Yankees looking to build a “super bullpen”.

The Yankees have expressed a willingness to pay all of the $28 million remaining through 2017 on Kimbrel’s deal, but it isn’t known what they are offering in the way of players. They declined to surrender shortstop prospect Jorge Mateo, as was already reproted on CBSSports.com.

Milwaukee Journal, July 31, 1915:

Conversation with [Braves manager] George Stallings this season has been of a most unique variety, Mr. Stallings using a form of speech very much like that of the Arapaho Indians, whose grunting gutturals are so obscure that two Arapahos cannot understand each other in the dark. This is about the way Mr. Stallings talks for publication this summer, according to a writer in the Cincinnati Times-Star:

Pirates acquire Joakim Soira from Tigers | MLB.com

The bodies are flying now.

he National League Central race still has 10 weeks to go. But the Pirates have already beaten out the Cardinals on one count: Joakim Soria.

Swinging their second deal of the day to solidify the bullpen, the Bucs on Thursday acquired the fading Tigers’ closer—who had been also on the wish-list of the Cardinals, looking to bolster their own bullpen even after last week’s acquisition of Steve Cishek from the Marlins.

Lookout Landing: Ackley Traded to Yankees for Flores and Ramirez

There’s no way to dress this up: That Dustin Ackley’s career as a Mariner ended with him being traded for one fringe 4th OF and a relief pitcher with a horrendous walk rate and iffy health history is a real shame.

Oop Ackley, as Bill the Cat might say.

10 Major Trades that Never Were

What about Omar Vizquel for Carl Yaztrzmski with the sideburns?

9. Albert Pujols to the Expos—2000

The St. Louis Cardinals found themselves in a pickle in 2000. Looking for young arms to add to the organization, St. Louis struck up a deal with the Montreal Expos to send Britt Reames and another player to Montreal for two pitchers. They just had to decide who to send: Fernando Tatis or Albert Pujols. Obviously, the Cards sent Tatis and the next season Pujols won NL Rookie of the Year before ...

You mean players aren’t just stat lines?

In 1999, I played for the Detroit Tigers. We weren’€™t a good team and I was a left-handed reliever, the most dispensable job in baseball. In late July, the rumors were flying. I had a player I knew well from an opposing team come up to me during batting practice one day and say, “€œYankees, huh? That would be nice.”

Word had gotten around that there was a possibility of a deal that would send me to the New York Yankees. I am a New York native and ...

Difference: 95 WAR.

Here is a story that appeared in the Sports and Sportsmen section of the Lowell Sun on Dec. 27, 1900, just when the legendary new York Giants pitcher Amos Rusie was deciding whether or not to accept the trade to Cincinnati. It is filled with all the misogyny and absurdity of the time:

Amos Rusie, one of the best baseball ...

Buster Posey’s Pitch Framing Makes Him A Potential MVP | FiveThirtyEight

Sounds like WAR needs to be tweaked.

No current version of WAR accounts for framing, a catcher’s art of carefully receiving the pitch in such a way as to cause the umpire to call it a strike. That happens to be Posey’s most important defensive talent. Good framers turn pitches outside of the zone into strikes and keep pitches within the zone from being called incorrectly as balls. This ability, in turn, scares opposing batters into swinging at less-optimal pitches, making the impact of good ...
