What Happened to Derek Norris in 2016 | The Process Report

Or it could be a decline in skills?

Well that certainly feels like what Lester Freamon would call a headshot. seeing both rates fall off this much leads me to believe that Norris wasn’t just bitten by bad luck affecting his balls in play. I cannot help, but feel that some sort of injury, your guess is as good as mine as to what, led to a guy gutting through discomfort in an effort to help his team on the field. While that is nice to see, you can see the profound effect this proposed malady had ...

Four reasons Mets must sign Yoenis Cespedes to a big deal | New York Post

Cespedes has stepped up with his production, and the Mets must step up with their years and dollars. See if a four-year, $100 million agreement — sure, go ahead and frontload it and offer him an opt-out after 2017, replicating the details that increased the lure of their prior agreement — will get it done. If Cespedes has too many superior offers? Jack it up to five years and $125 million.

Hart: Braves’ rebuild is going faster than expected |

Which is why it was a big deal, in the first weeks after Wren’s ouster, to promote Brian Bridges to scouting director and bring back Roy Clark, who’d left for the Nationals. Coppolella’s vision includes “wave after wave of prospects” coming through the system: “I believe in waves,” he says, “not windows.” And Swanson, the tip of Wave 1, was as good as advertised.

Let’s be clear. The Braves aren’t yet where they need to be. But, as Hart said, “to where we are from where ...

A baseball ticket in Texas costs less than a beer at the Rogers Centre does

It’s cheaper to buy a seat for a Jays’ playoff game in Texas (as low as $8) than to drink a beer ($10) while watching the playoffs at the Rogers Centre.

Kim Ng, Four Others Among D-Backs GM Candidates

The Diamondbacks appear to have compiled at least a preliminary list of potential general manager candidates to take over for the departing Dave Stewart, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe (Twitter link). In addition to a quartet of men with ties to the organization, MLB senior VP Kim Ng is under consideration, per the report.

Ng has long been discussed as a front office target for organizations, and has interviewed for top baseball ops positions on several occasions. A former ...

Joe Buck reveals how hair replacement almost ended his career |

No, this isn’t from the Onion.

As a young man, one of Buck’s overwhelming fears was losing his hair, and the possibility soon consumed him. So at age 24, in Oct. 1993, he flew to New York City to get his first hair replacement treatment. He writes that, after the procedure, “I, Joseph Francis Buck, became a hair-plug addict.”

red sox - Meet the man who played a pivotal role in transforming Hanley Ramirez into playoff first baseman (it’s not who you think) - WEEI | Rob Bradford

Hanley did a nice job over at first base this year. He wasn’t a Gold Glove first baseman but he played well enough to keep himself there next season.

“I prepared myself to be in this position, and we’re here,” Ramirez said. “That should be your mentality every spring training, if you’re not, you’re a loser. Your mentality has to be playing in October and celebrating in November. That’s why they sign you and give you everything you need to help you win a championship.

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, October 6, 1916:

Charles Evans Hughes, Republican candidate for president, has made a request for a box seat at the first world’s series baseball game to be played in Brooklyn, it was learned…today. The Brooklyn club management has granted the request and a box back of third base was set aside for Mr. Hughes and his party. It is expected that the candidate will throw out the first ball.

Can Jeurys Familia ever be trusted again? | New York Post

Starting with this one: Can they still trust Familia?

“All he did all year long was pick up his teammates,” manager Terry Collins said. “But in the postseason when you give one up and you lose a game, it can be really hard on you.”

Familia, to his credit, stood at his locker and answered wave after wave of interrogators. Also to his credit, he didn’t look shattered. His head wasn’t covered in a towel, and tears didn’t fill his eyes. In that sense, at least, he recalled Mariano ...

I’ve argued in the past for the idea of “emergent WAR,” which is the idea of teams deriving value, not from individual contributions, but from the ways in which the parts of the roster can interact with one another. For example, putting a groundball-heavy pitcher in front of a good infield defense can be worth several hits turned into outs, and turning a hit into an out is worth roughly three-quarters of a run each time you do it. A good GM could have the wherewithal to execute a plan to ...

Astros minor-leaguer apologizes for tweet criticizing Jessica Mendoza

What Marlow said was stupid. I don’t agree, however, with the idea that any non-specific criticism should be automatically painted as misogynistic. The writer’s decision to paint her detractors with a broad brush as a response undercuts his argument.

But Marlow’s criticism follows the same tired trend we always see with Mendoza. It’s never specific, and it’s more about the fact that she’s a woman than anything else. It’s never anything like, “I wish her hitting breakdowns were more ...

Giants vs. Mets 2016 final score: Madison Bumgarner shuts out New York to advance to NLDS -

His run as really been incredible. Can he keep it going?

Madison Bumgarner remains untouchable in winner-take-all games
Madison Bumgarner hasn’t allowed a run in his last 23 innings in the playoffs. He’s started the Wild Card Game twice and thrown a shutout each time, with the previous one coming in 2014.

Since the Giants had to use Bumgarner for the Wild Card Game, he won’t be able to get two starts against the Cubs if the NLDS goes a full five games. However, Johnny Cueto exists and the ...

Manfred in favor of changing Sept. call-up rules

This guy is in favor of everything.

Asked Tuesday whether he liked seeing games that feature 17 or 18 relievers because of all the September call-ups, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred replied, “I don’t think 18 pitchers in a game is a good thing.’‘

In 33 games this season, Rivera hit .333 and has essentially been the club’s starting second baseman since mid-September. He was 2-for-3 against Bumgarner when the lefty pitched against the Mets in August.

If the baseball magnates, and the National Commission in particular, want to help baseball and restore the confidence of the fans, let them abolish the world’s series.

Pitching guru Brian Bannister has Red Sox staff on upswing | Boston Herald

Brian Bannister needs to get out of his mom’s basement.

The way Red Sox pitching guru Brian Bannister sees it, there’s a war going on in baseball that’s not taking place on the field.

It’s going on in the darkest corners behind stadium walls. And after Bannister helped the staff go from 21st-ranked in the majors to second-best behind only the Chicago Cubs, it sure looks like the Red Sox are winning the war off the field, too.
