A former pro baseball player was arrested Friday in a double murder case in Corona.
Brandon Martin was being sought after the bodies of two men were found inside a home in the 1000 block of Winthrop Drive Thursday night.
Martin once had a bright future as a pro baseball player. Now, the 22-year-old is suspected of murdering his 64-year-old father Michael Martin and 62-year-old Barry Swanson, a sub-contractor for ADT Security.
Neighbors were in shock over the identity of the suspect. ...
What do they do with Holland?
Scarcely 10 minutes had passed since the walkoff hit that sunk the Royals — perhaps ending Greg Holland’s tenure as the team’s closer — fell into left field at Comerica Park. Manager Ned Yost understood the implications of Holland’s latest stumble, which cost the club a 5-4 defeat in 12 innings to Detroit and slimmed the Royals’ lead over Toronto for home-field advantage to just one game.
But Yost did not intend to discuss the fallout of Holland’s ...

Jung Ho Kang was injured because he didn’t clear the bag properly.
“By definition, they are legal slides (at second). Is there a way we can change the definition of a legal slide to possibly ensure better safety?” Hurdle said. “We always want to try to find a way to ensure safety to the best of our abilities without taking away from the game. I think we’ve been able to do that at home plate. The amended rule to home plate (collisions) has turned out to be excellent for the game. Those ...

The fist pound attempt was very awkward.
More than 120 years ago, Simon Hansen Sondergaard left this town in southwest Denmark for the United States. He settled in Iowa, along with four of his five siblings, where he farmed and raised a family.
Four generations later, his great-great-grandson was born in Mansfield, Tex. Noah Syndergaard — with a surname slightly Anglicized from his Sondergaard ancestry — would go on to become a budding star pitcher for the Mets, beloved by the team’s fans for his fastball and, in part, for his ...

Where will Ned Colletti end up next?
With the healthy return of Giancarlo Stanton, will Ichiro be able to get enough AB to reach 3000 hits? He has 89 hits in 368 AB this year. Although he should get a few more in the last couple of weeks, he’ll probably need about 60 hits next year. If he hits .250, he’ll need 240 at bats to get there.

“I think what you see is what you get,” Scott Van Slyke said of Turner. “He doesn’t have the stereotypical red-head, gets-angry, short-tempered thing. Because of that, he makes people around him better. He’ll sit with Joc and talk situational hitting. He’ll lighten the bench. You know there’s gonna be days you hate your job and you’re on the bench and you’re not hitting. That’s when you gotta find a way to enjoy it.”
Attitude over aptitude, that sort of thing. And then, ...

The Twins are one game back of the Astros. The Angels are two games. The Indians are three back. It’s pucker time in Houston.
Oakland’s Sonny Gray (13-7, 2.56) opposes former Athletic Scott Kazmir (7-10, 2.63) when the series continues Saturday. Gray is 4-2 with a 1.88 ERA in six career starts against the Astros. Kazmir, who was traded to Houston in July, allowed seven hits and four runs in a loss to Oakland on Sept. 8.

“I’m really disappointed in what the Cardinals did right there,” Maddon said after the game. “We did not hit their guy on purpose. That was an absolute mistake.
“To become this vigilante group that wants to get their own pound of flesh, that’s absolutely insane, ridiculous and wrong. We don’t start stuff, but we will stop stuff.”

It’s nice to see President Carter at the ballpark. His kiss was just long enough to be uncomfortable.

A minor league baseball pitcher is in very serious condition after being shot in the head in a drive-by shooting early Friday in the parking lot of a Yonkers Burger King, according to police.
A fun retrospective on some of the players and moments that have been part of the New York-New York series since the start of interleague play.

Pitcher Mat Latos will not finish the season with the Los Angeles Dodgers after the team designated him for assignment on Thursday.
Latos, a right-hander who arrived from the Miami Marlins as part of a 13-player trade on July 30, has struggled in almost all of his appearances since the trade. He finishes his time with the Dodgers with an 0-3 record, 6.66 ERA and 31 hits allowed in 24⅓ innings.
Latos is set for free agency this offseason after signing a one-year deal with ...

Not very complimentary.
Is there a viable in-house partner for catcher Mike Zunino?
“Is that a serious question?” one scout asked. “If they had a truly legit guy anywhere in the system, they’d have sent Zunino to the minors in May.”
From another: “They had that guy in (Welington) Castillo, and they traded him (to Arizona). Now, I’m a (Mark) Trumbo guy. I’d rather have Trumbo (than Castillo) unless I really needed a catcher. They really need a catcher.”
From a third: “They ...

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, September 18, 1915:
Umpire Rigler gave the double-header [between the Pirates and Giants] an unusual feature when he chased 19 New York players including Manager John McGraw to the club house for their actions following a disputed strike decision in the second game.
Grant flied out, and as he was passing Umpire Rigler on the way to the New York bench he made some remarks to the official. A few minutes later, Rigler halted the game and gave McGraw the sign to leave ...
His improved play might not be enough to keep him at the position, however.
But it’s really been a tale of two halves for the East Bay native. Just six of those errors have come in the 51 games since the All-Star break. In watching Semien on a regular basis, it’s clear he’s handling shortstop with more confidence and fluidity over the second half. His athleticism has been on display on some highlight-worthy plays recently, including a terrific stop in the hole against the White Sox on ...

Let’s take a stroll around the current Mets infield. That big power-hitting lug Lucas Duda at first base? He was a Minaya-era draft pick, as was second baseman Daniel Murphy, whose hands are iron-coated but whose bat is gold-plated. Shortstop Ruben Tejada, completing a smart comeback year, was a find from Panama.
Wilmer Flores, Citi Field’s own Fountain of Tears, plays shortstop and second and swings a handsome bat. Minaya’s scouts signed Flores in Venezuela when he was 16.

Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang will need season-ending surgery after a takeout slide at second base against the Chicago Cubs earlier on Thursday. He will miss the remainder of the season, as first reported by Dejan Kovacevic of DKPittsburghSports.com.
The play in question was a double play ground ball to second base in the top of the first inning by Anthony Rizzo. Chris Coghlan slid hard into the shortstop Kang as he turned the double play. Kang was removed from the ...
Don’t like having your season decided by one game? Win your division. I greatly prefer this setup to the old one where the only drawback was one less playoff game.
And so the Cubs, even if they end up with a better record against better competition than the majority of division winners, will likely see their season reduced to a single road game in Pittsburgh. And the Pirates, for owning the second-best record in the sport despite playing the Cardinals 18 times, risk seeing their postseason end ...

Milo Hamilton, who was behind the microphone for Hank Aaron’s record-breaking 715th home run and later spent decades as the voice of the Astros, has died. He was 88.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers traded for Johnson, Mat Latos and Wood. Latos still hasn’t won a game, and Wood had pitched poorly before Wednesday night. Johnson’s been a disaster.
Oh, and the Dodgers are 7 ½ games ahead of the Giants.
Their big moves didn’t work at all, and all they’ve done is run away and hide.
Which should be the real takeaway here.
The Mets would have a big lead without Cespedes, the Royals without Zobrist; granted, both teams will probably be thrilled to have ...
