Shelby Miller market is hot; Luis Severino, Marcell Ozuna are linked -

The Diamondbacks and Giants are two more of the 20 or so teams that are said to have expressed interest in Miller. The Braves generally are seeking to upgrade their offense, though obviously in the case of Severino they are willing to look at young pitchers, as well.

One rival GM, while not denigrating the asking prices, said the Braves were “very aggressive” with their proposal.

While there’s no word of anything being close, no one’s exactly hanging up yet. Miller raised his value with a ...

Mariners showing interest in free-agent outfielder Nori Aoki | The News Tribune

After a break for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Mariners are back to stoking the Hot Stove with free-agent outfielder Nori Aoki emerging as their latest possible target.

“At this point,” one industry source said, “there appears to be real interest (in Aoki) from the Mariners. Whether that leads to a deal is anybody’s guess.”

KATOH’s Top 100 Prospect List for 2016 | FanGraphs Baseball

Prospects by the numbers.

I know you probably know this, but I’d like to reiterate that you shouldn’t think of this as “Chris Mitchell’s Top 100 List,” and certainly not “FanGraphs’ Top 100 List.” This is simply the output from a flawed statistical model that fails to take into account many of the factors that go into evaluating a prospect. As always, you should never choose between stats and scouting — or beer and tacos — if you don’t have to.

There are players on this ...

In Baseball, a Sparkling Consolation Prize

Makes it harder to COUNT DA RINGZ if everyone gets one.

Glass wanted to spare no expense. But Uhlich and Moore persuaded him to tone down the ring and keep it to a reasonable size, something fitting of a pennant, not a World Series. They had both companies make sample rings, and they chose Jostens’s design, made of 10-karat white gold, with the “KC” logo. The total carat weight is 1.9 carats.

“We think it’s a beautiful ring,” Uhlich said. “But we did consciously make sure that ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-1-2015

New York Sun, December 1, 1915:

President James A. Gilmore of the Federal League, in a somewhat evasive way, discussed further yesterday afternoon the plans of himself and colleagues for the establishment of an independent team at Lenox avenue and 145th street. Gilmore refused to name the backers of his latest enterprise, but intimated that he might take the public into his confidence in this matter inside of three weeks or a month.
A story printed in the afternoon editions attributed to ...

Barry Bonds is under consideration to be a Marlins hitting coach

Bonds would be the clear choice.

In what promises to be a bombshell move, if executed, all-time great slugger Barry Bonds is under consideration to become Marlins hitting coach.

Team higherups have quietly been discussing this possibility for weeks.

Bonds, known as a brilliant tactician, has worked as a special spring instructor for the Giants on occasion. It isn’t known whether he’s willing to move across the country for such a hitting coach job, but he has been working on brandishing his ...

GM Jed Hoyer: Chicago Cubs not close but moves are coming - Chicago Cubs Blog- ESPN

Hoyer couldn’t pin down whether the Cubs would add via trade or free agency, calling both markets “developing.” Several free agents have signed contracts, including pitcher Jordan Zimmermann, who agreed on a deal with Detroit over the weekend. The big question for the Cubs has been whether to spend a limited increase in their budget mostly on one player or to spread it around to various needs, which include center field and starting pitching.

“Those are the philosophical questions ...

While [Cleveland owner Charles] Somers is in Chicago he’ll probably close up the Joe Jackson deal. When the trade was made it was for $31,250 in cash, with the understanding that three players, acceptable to the Cleveland club, would be sent to the Indians later.

Tigers, Zimmermann reportedly reach deal

DETROIT—The Tigers on Sunday have reportedly come to terms with right-hander Jordan Zimmermann, according to FOX Sports said the deal is expected to be for five years and roughly $110 million. The Tigers have not commented.

FOX reported late Saturday night that the two sides were in negotiations, which were believed to have grown serious. A baseball source later confirmed the two sides were in talks, though no deal was believed to have been finalized.

A Pitch is Framed in Diplomacy in Cuba

Mr. Burns, I think we can trust the President of Cuba…..

More than half a century has passed since the Havana Sugar Kings, a Cincinnati Reds affiliate, played in the Class AAA International League. Since the giddy gunfire of followers of the revolutionary Fidel Castro grazed a shortstop and a third-base coach at a game against the Rochester Red Wings. Since Havana won the 1959 Little World Series against the Minneapolis Millers here at home.

Bidding for David Price could reach 7 years, $210 million - The Boston Globe

Seven years? I’d rather see some other team make that mistake.

The bidding should reach the seven-year, $210 million range and likely include the Blue Jays, Cardinals, Cubs, Giants, and Dodgers. But other teams on the periphery could become engaged, such as the Nationals, Angels, Rangers, and Astros.

Stewart was somewhat ambivalent – and waxed a tad philosophical –when I asked him about the importance of Ks.

David Price would be right move for Red Sox - The Boston Globe

It will be interesting to ultimately add up the cost of letting Jon Lester go.

The Red Sox botched up their negotiations with Lester in during spring training of 2014, making an initial offer of $70 million that was roughly $40 million short of what it should have been. Talks broke down and Lester was traded in July.

The Sox went downhill, Lester was traded for Yoenis Cespedes and that ultimately became Rick Porcello. Ben Cherington was ousted as GM and Dombrowski was hired.

Think about it. ...

Chris Davis and the ‘hometown discount’ - Baltimore Sun

According to sources, the Orioles ultimately don’t believe they’ll be the highest bidder for Davis, who is 29 and has hit more homers than any other major leaguer in the past four years. One source said that the organization would not be comfortable agreeing to a $150 to $175 million deal with Davis, which seems like it could be the market range.

Yet sources also say the Orioles believe they have a fighting chance to retain Davis—and that’s where the hometown discount will have to come ...

Why did Braves trade Andrelton Simmons? | Atlanta Braves blog

This is well worth reading.

Why make the trade now instead of waiting, at least until the Winter Meetings, to drive up the price?

“Take a team like the Angels. They have needs at second base, third base, left field, bullpen. And we felt these were their two best prospects.  If we wanted to wait until the Winter Meetings, there’s a good chance that they are gone and that we don’t get this sort of opportunity again. And that’s just one example. If there’s a good deal….
