Blue Jays, Rangers throw punches during game | MLB.com

I usually don’t care about this kind of stuff. This fracas was pretty stupid though.

Feud reignites in Blue Jays-Rangers finale

That changed two batters later, when Justin Smoak hit a grounder to third baseman Adrian Beltre, who tried to get a forceout at second base. Bautista came into the base with a hard slide that was ruled a violation of MLB’s new slide rule and made contact with second baseman Rougned Odor’s leg. And even though Odor’s throw sailed wide of first, the Rangers were awarded an inning-ending double play because of Bautista’s illegal slide.

Before the play was over, Odor shoved Bautista with both ...

Townsend (BLS): Houston paper apologizes for quoting Carlos Gomez’s broken English

He Hate Me was unavailable for comment.

What’s not arguable, though, is that Smith should have used better judgment in quoting Gomez within his article. Gomez, who comes from Santiago in the Dominican Republic, does not speak English as his primary language. He speaks well enough English though that his words are understandable and translatable, yet Smith elected to quote Gomez’s broken English word-for-word.

“For the last year and this year, I not really do much for this team. The fans be ...

Former Angels and Dodgers pitcher Dan Haren opens up about the inner turmoil that led to his retirement from baseball

Dan Haren repeated a ritual after the miserable outings, and during the last four years of his baseball career the miserable outings became too numerous to count. He trudged off the mound and through the dugout, embarrassed by the reassurances from teammates, so he could find his phone in the clubhouse and text his wife, Jessica.

I quit, Haren would write after games for the Angels or the Dodgers or whoever employed him.

I don’t want to do this anymore.

I’m sick of the stress.

I quit.

Full Count » David Ortiz after walk-off win: ‘Just say I’m a bad [expletive]’

Some people are clamoring for David Ortiz to renounce his decision to retire at the end of the year. I’m not one of them. Ortiz keeps talking about the problems he has with his legs and the amount of work he needs to do to play. He has also talked about missing time with his family. So, although I am enjoying his final season, I’d rather see him go out at the top of his game as he enjoys his last season rather than watch him try to force another season, which might very well turn into an ...

10 players that should earn your All-Star vote | MLB.com

One of my favorite things about baseball is seeing players advance their games unexpectedly. Which of these guys will continue their hot starts?

Maybe they weren’t on our radars on Opening Day. Who knew if all of them would even stick around? As for All-Star consideration, no, that wasn’t part of the conversation.

Things have changed now as we consider our All-Star ballots. They’ve earned our consideration. One of the coolest things about every All-Star Game is watching the players who are ...

Yankees’ Luis Severino exits with injury | yankees.com

The Yankees may finally have an explanation for Luis Severino’s sophomore slump. Forced to leave his start in the third inning on Friday, the hurler has been diagnosed with a mild strain of his right triceps, which will necessitate a stint on the 15-day disabled list.

The Yankees are expected to call up right-hander Chad Green from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take Severino’s spot on the roster, according to MLB.com’s Jon Morosi.

Severino struggled mightily in a 7-1 loss to the White ...

MiLB: Rangers call up former top pick Bush

Nearly 12 years since being drafted, Matt Bush is finally getting the call he’s dreamed of.

The former No. 1 overall pick was promoted to the Majors on Friday by Texas after starting the season with Double-A Frisco, where he was 0-2 with a 2.65 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 17 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander will join the Rangers after signing with the team this past December following a three-year prison sentence from a nearly fatal DUI incident in 2012.

The Rangers optioned outfielder ...

Baseball Prospectus | Life at the Margins: Swing, Batta Batta

This is more about math than insight.

This means—and this is the really important part—that while a big-league hitter, on average, is just as likely to swing on a 3-1 count achieved after a 2-1 count as he is on the same count achieved from a 3-0 take, certain big-league hitters are far more likely to swing in the second count than the first. It’s those batters, I assume, that Zaidi and the Dodgers are targeting. Just something to watch out for, as you take in the game of baseball during ...

Connie Mack, quoted in the Pittsburgh Press, May 13, 1916:

“I am going to start Elmer Myers against the St. Louis team today…There are three reasons why Myers will pitch. First, I think it will help to improve his control, and with control he will be one of the best youngsters I have uncovered in many a moon. Again, he is what I have been hunting for—a fellow who thrives under work, who loves to pitch and who can stand it and improve under it. The third reason is that Myers asked me if he could ...

No, Jose Ramirez’s Helmet Doesn’t Defy The Laws of Gravity

The Internet loves a great video. In today’s clip we see José Ramírez of the Cleveland Indians sliding into second base. But wait! His hat (I’m calling it a hat, not a helmet, because no one has a magic helmet) flies off and hits his foot. Magically, the hat appears to fly backward yet still end up hitting Ramírez on the back as he reaches second base.

What’s realistic to expect in the end from .409-hitting Murphy? - Nationals Pastime

The purpose of this exercise? There are two conclusions worth drawing: 1) Murphy deserves a whole lot of credit for what he’s done to date, because not many have been able to do it over the years, and 2) Barring a complete collapse from a guy who has been a very good hitter his entire career, Murphy should end up with a batting average well north of .300 by season’s end.

After his team secured a fifth consecutive win with a fourth straight game of at least 11 runs on Thursday night at Fenway Park, Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts compared Boston’s unstoppable offense to a video game.

“This is kind of like Playstation,” Bogaerts said after hitting his third home run of the season and driving in three runs in an 11-1 rout of the Astros. “Only teams on Playstation score this many runs.”

Bernie Williams hits right notes in pursuit of music degree

I’ve always admired athletes who have interesting post-playing careers. Especially one like this, where a former superstar had to humble himself by going back to school. Well done, Bernie.

Remarkably, in a city where he remains a huge celebrity and ran with the likes of Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez in a former life and earned over $100M in ...

Tigers’ Steven Moya in left field; Justin Upton in center

BALTIMORE—The Detroit Tigers did not promote outfielder Steven Moya to sit on the bench.

Moya will start in left field and bat seventh tonight when the Detroit Tigers open a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles. Justin Upton will make his first big-league start in center field.

There is much less room in the outfield at Oriole Park at Camden Yards than at Comerica Park, which might explain the willingness of Brad Ausmus to give Upton a shot in center.

Just what in the heck is ...
