BP: David Stearns Continues Baseball’s Ivy Invasion

Stearns represents what David Lennon called “baseball’s new executives” at Newsday: young, highly educated white men with advanced baseball experience, but whose training prepared them for Wall Street instead of sports. It’s a new era for the Brewers, who join a seeming ever growing list of teams prioritizing education over experience in front offices.

Peter Gammons: Red Sox could use an “Alpha Dog” to fill top of rotation -

There is a long way to go in all this. Dombrowski may try to move some of the money owed Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval, which may not be simple propositions. Ownership may want to restrict pitching contracts. They may look at the fact that four of the top pitchers in WAR are Jake Arrieta, Dallas Keuchel, John Lackey (the ask-out fallout from the Lester offer) and Chris Archer; the work put in the last two months in developing and finding pitchers has been tireless and creative.

Alpha dogs ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-22-2015

Bridgeport Evening Farmer, September 22, 1915:

There should be a general celebration among the fans tomorrow, for this Sept. 23rd will commemorate the seventieth anniversary of the adoption of the first code of rules to govern the great merican [sic] pastime. While the first baseball contest was played in Hoboken in 1846, under these rules, the code itself was promulgated by the Knickerbocker club of New York on Cept. [sic] 23, 1845.

Blue Jays’ MVP candidate Josh Donaldson features unique inner confidence | FOX Sports

Huh, I guess the new guy at work isn’t really a jackass, he’s a fledgling superstar.

“It was like Day 3, and I was like, ‘Who the heck is that?’” Gomes recalls. “He had a big old knee kick, was hitting moon shots over the scoreboard.

“The guys who had been there were like, ‘He’s kind of a jackass, kind of like in his own world. He does this. He does that.’ I thought in my head, ‘Those are all characteristics of a superstar. That’s how superstars act.’”

Cubs’ Theo Epstein supports Joe Maddon’s stand against Cardinals Way - Chicago Tribune

Most great organizations have a handbook to promote consistency within their systems. If any of you have copies of your organization’s document, I would very much like to get a copy for a project that I’m working on.

Epstein said it was not so much a knock on the Cardinals Way but an affirmation the Cubs aren’t going to back down.

“The way they run their shop and their front office, just because we hate them doesn’t mean we can’t respect the job they’ve done for almost 100 years,” he said. “But ...

Grant: It worked for the 2013 Boston Red Sox…how Mike Napoli and a box of U.S. flag-themed shorts hope to spark a postseason run for the Rangers | Dallas Morning News

“He’s a relationship guy and loves to connect with everybody in the clubhouse,” Banister added. “He brings that intensity and some camaraderie. It’s real. ... You need a guy like that.”

It’s not as if Napoli learned the art of connecting overnight. For the start of his career, he played with well-respected, clubhouse-uniters such as Torii Hunter and Vladimir Guerrero in Anaheim. With the Rangers, he lockered next to—and gravitated toward—Michael Young for two years and was also around Adrian ...

WSJ: Bill James and Billy Beane Discuss Big Data in Baseball

Billy Beane should have never written this article.

WSJ: We’ve seen advances in particular areas of the game in recent years—pitch framing, defensive shifts—that are now better understood. What do you guys see as the aspect of the sport that is most in need of more research, more data and better understanding?

Beane: I’m jumping out of my chair on this one. It’s using analytics—and this sounds sort of non-field-related—but it’s injuries and medical. Even the healthcare ...

Postseason Rotations and Matching Up Aces

In a five-game Division Series, most managers start their ace in Game 1, assuming that he is available to pitch on regular rest. That will optimize a club’s chances of winning Game 1. However, I’ve wondered if that does not necessarily optimize that same club’s chances of winning the series. Would a team be able to, under some circumstances, optimize its chances of winning the series by using their #2 starter in Game 1, and starting the ace in Game 2?

Regardless of what strategy you ...

Royals starter Johnny Cueto rebounds after asking Sal Perez to change his setup behind the plate

Why don’t men ever talk about their problems?

Part of his trouble, Cueto explained to the team, was he tries to throw exactly toward the catcher’s glove. Perez often set the target high in the zone, intending to lower his mitt with the pitch. But the optics challenged Cueto, which may have led to him spinning a series of cutters and changeups at the waist of opposing hitters in recent weeks.

Cueto offered a series of suggestions for Perez. Cueto needed the mitt positioned lower in the ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-21-2015

Grand Forks Daily Herald, September 21, 1915:

An interesting question for baseball fans to discuss during their leisure moments away from the ball grounds is the reason for the failure—almost absolute—of two brothers attaining success on the diamond at the same time. This condition is true of the majority of sports competitions, and only a few cases can be cited where brothers attained success together.

I imagine this is because it’s really, really hard to succeed in a professional sport. ...

CC Sabathia will need knee-replacement surgery |

That can’t be fun to work through.

Asked if he ultimately would need knee-replacement surgery, Sabathia said, “Eventually, but that’s the price you pay.”

With all eyes on Mets starter Matt Harvey—who was pulled after five innings and 77 pitches having allowed only one hit—Sabathia almost quietly made his third start since coming back from missing 16 days on the disabled list. The big left-hander is able to pitch thanks to a brace on the knee that allows him to land on his front leg without ...

Royals’ missing piece is missing what made him a commodity | New York Post

Things don’t always work out according to plan.

The Royals gave up very good prospects for a rental. So Cueto was obtained to start Game 1. Period. Anything less is failure. He was acquired to be the missing piece for a Royals team arguably better than the one that went to World Series Game 7 last year, since Kansas City’s offense is improved while its defense and bullpen remain stellar — though the loss of velocity/effectiveness by Greg Holland is now a huge issue as well.

Yankees rout Mets to take Subway Series |

Watching the game I was struck by three things. ESPN broadcasting team is dreadful. Harvey looked great. It was really awkward when he was removed from the game.

Between then and now, baseball’s media universe will be abuzz with talk of Harvey, who was as dominant Sunday as at any point this season. Striking out seven over five innings, Harvey allowed just one hit. Only four of the 18 batters he faced hit the ball out of the infield.

But the Mets removed Harvey after the fifth in an effort to ...

Milwaukee Brewers hire David Stearns for GM |

David Stearns hadn’t been born when the Brewers went to the World Series in 1982. As the team’s next general manager, his job is to get them back.

A source confirmed to Sunday that the Brewers were poised to hire the 30-year-old Astros assistant general manager to replace outgoing Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin. The choice was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of MLB Network and Fox Sports.

Nick Cafardo | Sunday Baseball Notes: Now that he’s gone, Ben Cherington’s vision for Red Sox is panning out - The Boston Globe

Patience and Boston don’t go together. I blame ownership for losing Theo and Cherington. Cherington had a long-term plan for the Red Sox. Unfortunately, one surprise World Series championship wasn’t enough to keep the baseball jackals at bay.

It sounds like the decision has already been made.

Everyone in the clubhouse can do the math.

Reds notes: Latest on Billy Hamilton’s shoulder

Price said there’s also a chance that the Reds will shut him down so he can concentrate on rehabbing the shoulder.

Sunday Notes: Melancon, Anthopoulos, Tracking Pitches, more | FanGraphs Baseball

Some good stuff in David Laurila’s latest.

Alex Anthopoulos is a big believer in blending scouting and analytics. Many general managers are. The extent to which they balance the two, relative to each other, is a matter of conjecture. Ditto what they value most within each discipline.

The Toronto GM has an idea where his contemporaries lean, but only to a degree.

“You can see certain themes, but I don’t know that we know all that much,” said Anthopoulos. “There are certain GMs who have ...
