Derek Jeter Was Once the Captain. But Now He’s the Apprentice. - The New York Times

The Marlins aren’t trying to shed salary. Stanton was traded because he didn’t want to stick around. At least that’s the company line Michael Hill was peddling on MLB Network yesterday.

What new Mets regime sees in Matt Harvey for last ride | New York Post

Who doesn’t look good throwing in a gym during the off-season?

“We are really encouraged,” his agent, Scott Boras, said. “Matt was out at our sports fitness institute this past two weeks and the ball was really coming out of his hand at Matt Harvey levels of the past, so we’re really excited about what 2018 holds for him.”

You should be very skeptical of claims the Royals lost over $60 million the last two years - Royals Review

Teams can lose money in specific years. That doesn’t mean an owner loses money over the long term despite some year-to-year loses.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Royals were losing some money. But $65-68 million over a two-year period doesn’t quite pass the smell test. That isn’t to say I think Dayton Moore is lying, but there are many different ways to interpret “losing money” when it comes to sports teams. For that, let’s turn to Shaun Newkirk, who is much better with his money ...

Alex Anthopoulos bringing high-level analytics approach to Braves

“It was eye-opening for me,” Anthopoulos said of the Dodgers’ use of analytics and as much data as available, boiled down for players to consume if they so chose. “Look, it’s not a panacea for anything. You still need great players and obviously Los Angeles has great players and great acquisitions. Most of all, this stuff, it’s up to the players. Chris Taylor made a lot of great changes in L.A.; he made those changes. He wanted to do that, he had a willingness to do it.”

Angels trade for Tigers’ Ian Kinsler

The Angels will take on the entirety of Kinsler’s $11 million salary in 2018, the final year of his contract. The price for Kinsler was outfielder Troy Montgomery and right-hander Wilkel Hernandez, who were ranked as the Angels’ Nos. 20 and 24 prospects, respectively, by MLBPipeline.com.

ESPN: Buster Olney: Judge Should Hit Leadoff For The Yankees

Get the pitcher sweating bullets right from the start?

But Judge can bat leadoff because he has the primary skill of the best No. 1 hitters: He gets on base a whole lot. Judge drew 127 walks, easily leading the American League and breaking Ted Williams’ 78-year-old record for a rookie, and only Mike Trout had a higher on-base percentage than Judge’s .422.

Judge also led the AL in strikeouts, with 208, and between his combination of walks and strikeouts, he averaged 4.41 pitches per plate ...

ESPN: Bob Costas wins Hall of Fame’s Frick Award for broadcasting

He didn’t need a wild card to get in. Congratulations, Mr. Costas.

“Because of my love of baseball and because of the other names that (won the Frick Award), this is at the top of the list,” he said on a conference call. “No disrespect of all the other awards, because they all mean a lot to me, but this means the most.”

Mixing history, anecdotes and analysis, Costas is popular with viewers and listeners, using his words to paint pictures from the parks.

“For almost 40 years, Bob Costas has ...

Cardinals trade for Marcell Ozuna of Marlins

The Cardinals have been viewed as the frontrunners to land Ozuna, according to MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro, and a possible deal is expected to include two of the three of pitching prospects Jack Flaherty (St. Louis’ No. 3 prospect, according to MLBPipeline.com), Dakota Hudson (No. 8) and Sandy Alcantara (No. 9), in addition to a replacement in the outfield in either Stephen Piscotty or Randal Grichuk.

Eric Hosmer will get paid even though the numbers may argue against it

I’d rather have another team jump on this possible grenade.

Even those fluent in scouting and analytics find Hosmer’s case to be infuriatingly difficult to parse. How does one team’s internal scouting reports grade Hosmer’s glove as an 80 – a top-of-the-charts elite mark – while the publicly available defensive metrics regularly rate him among the game’s worst first basemen?

“In my heart, he’s a $100 million player,” one general manager said. “In my head, I’m not so ...

TELANDER: Conflict-of-interest issue in contract was award-winning | Chicago Sun-Times

Voters should take voting seriously. At some point, though, they can take themselves a little too seriously.

And Gordon Wittenmyer, our longtime Cubs beat writer, likes the voting but hates it when “the industry itself attaches itself to it.’’ Remember that, Theo. “Our integrity and our credibility are our brand. The appearance of conflict of interest is conflict of interest.’’

Case closed.

UCL of Los Angeles Angels’ Ohtani is damaged, according to physical

This doesn’t seem as big a deal as the Twitter reaction suggests. Of course, most things aren’t as big a deal as Twitter reactions suggest.

When reached late Tuesday, Angels general manager Billy Eppler told Yahoo Sports: “Shohei underwent a thorough physical with MRI scans to both his elbow and his shoulder. Those are scans we conduct whenever we sign a pitcher. Based on the readings of those MRIs, there are not signs of acute trauma in the elbow. It looks consistent with players his age. We ...

Cardinals Baseball Prez John Mozeliak Is in a Bind. Can He Find a Way Out? - 101Sports.com

But the Cardinals are in a bind… here’s why.

1. At least to this point, the Cardinals have made it very clear that they prefer to add impact talent through trades, rather than take a costly dive into the deep end of the free-agent pool. Of course, their philosophy could shift, based on, among other things, supply and demand and desperation. But if they plan to stay out of the expensive section of free agency, they’re eliminating a way to get better;  putting a limit on their options; and ...

MLB ump Dale Scott retires rather than risk more concussions

Rather than risk yet another concussion, Scott has decided to retire at 58.

“I’m done,” he told the Associated Press.

The veteran crew chief missed nearly the entire 2017 season after a foul ball off the bat of Baltimore slugger Mark Trumbo in Toronto on April 14 caught him hard in the mask, causing Scott’s second concussion in nine months and fourth in five years.

Eight out of 10 pitchers when asked whom they considered the longest hitter, declared without much hesitation in favor of Babe Ruth.
