Mets Continue to Act Like Small-Market Team | FanGraphs Baseball

Just finished Frank Cashen’s book. There wasn’t a lot of insight and way too much filler. I did not come away with the impression that Cashen liked the Wilpons much.

Giants miss out on first place — lose 5-2 - San Francisco Chronicle

“There’s a lot of baseball left, and there’s no point in looking at the standings because they don’t mean anything right now,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “The game goes on through September, and there’s a lot of work to do. We’ve been through this.”

PawSox intensify pitch for Providence stadium

When do they start passing around stacks of money to Rhode Island’s elected officials? Historically it’s the most effective way to screw over taxpayers, especially in that state.

The Pawtucket Red Sox have invited business, government, media and real-estate developers to travel with managing partner Larry Lucchino to Durham, North Carolina, on Aug. 5, to meet elected and business leaders there, including the owner of the Durham Bulls Triple-A baseball team, and to attend a Durham Bulls game.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-29-2015

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, July 29, 1915:

Two fights with the umpire marked [yesterday’s Federal League] double-header between Brooklyn and Kansas City…

In the first contest Umpire Corcoran called two Brooklyn runners safe on what [Kansas City] contended was a perfect double play. The argument which followed was punctuated with fisticuffs by George Stovall, manager of the locals, and he was sent to the club house. In the second game Lee Magee, manager of the Brooklyn team, objected to a decision ...

Nationals trade for closer Jonathan Papelbon | MLB.com

Storen reacts like expected. Storen and Papelbon have one thing other thing in common, neither of them are team first players.

Storen didn’t sound like a guy who was happy about the change.

“All I’m going to say is, I’m aware of the move and I’ve talked to Mike about it. I’ve talked to my agent about it,” Storen said. “We’ve had some ongoing discussions. Until those have progressed, I’m just going to leave it at that. No comment for now. But as the situation goes, I’ll keep you guys posted.”

Troy Tulowitzki says trade caught him by surprise, hopes to revive career with Blue Jays - The Denver Post

Yes, it was naive.

“I felt like I got blindsided a bit. I thought I was in the loop, in the conversation,” Tulowitzki said in his first comments since the deal went down. “So it definitely caught me by surprise. I was shocked and it caught me off guard. I think maybe I was a little naive to think I would be so connected to the (trade) process.”

Report: A potential Cubs — San Diego Padres trade still in the works

Stalin Castro in San Diego? That sounds like another disappointment for Padres fans.

According to ESPN writer Jim Bowden, the Cubs still have interest in Padres No. 2 pitcher Tyson Ross and closer Craig Kimbrel. Ross is 6-8 with a 3.45 ERA and 132 strikeouts, while Kimbrel has 29 saves with a 2.73 ERA this season.

Bowden said Chicago would give up a lot for the two pitchers. The Cubs would have to offer shortstop Starlin Castro, minor league pitchers C.J. Edwards and Pierce Johnson, and minor ...

Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia suspended 162 games | MLB.com

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia has been suspended 162 games for testing positive a second time for a performance-enhancing substance, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday. Mejia’s suspension is effective immediately.

Mejia, 25, had not allowed a run in 7 1/3 innings this season. He missed most of the year due to an 80-game suspension for his first positive test.

Braves Take Unorthodox Approach to Overhaul

A year after Arizona gave Toussaint a $2.7 million bonus as the 16th overall pick in the 2014 draft, the Braves assumed about $10 million owed to Arroyo to get Toussaint for themselves.

Arroyo is unlikely to throw a pitch for the Braves; Gosselin was included so the Diamondbacks would get something, besides financial relief, in return.

Clearly, the Braves believe it is more than $10 million. And it should be no surprise that Hart found a way, within the system, essentially to buy a prospect. ...Read More...

The team would then make a decision about where—and whether—to trade him.

The Phillies have continued to speak with a large number of teams—a group known to include the Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox—about Hamels.

Automated Strike Zone Gets Test Run - BaseballAmerica.com

This will be interesting.

There has been a lot of talk about the benefits and drawbacks of automated umpires for calling balls and strikes. Advocates and skeptics. But on Tuesday night in the independent Pacific Association in a game between the San Rafael Pacifics and Vallejo Admirals, everyone will get to see an automated strike zone in action in a professional game.

The two-game automated umpire trial is the brainchild of former big league outfielder Eric Byrnes, who will serve as the ...

Rosenthal: Tulowitzki trade to Blue Jays ‘shocking’ | FOX Sports

Is this trade enough to get the Jays into the playoffs? Can Tulo hold up on that turf?

The artificial turf at Rogers Centre is another concern for the oft-injured Tulo, but generally the surface is more of an issue for players with back trouble. Tulo underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip last August, but had played in 87 of the Rockies’ 97 first games. He was batting .300 with an .818 OPS, with similar splits at Coors Field and on the road.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-28-2015

Pittsburgh Press, July 28, 1915:

Here’s a new one they are starting to pull in the Central association and which is causing many arguments among the baseball rule sharks in this circuit: In giving a Keokuk batsman an intentional pass in a game at Waterloo the Jay pitcher threw four balls to the first baseman instead of the catcher and the umpire told the batter to take his base. The game was played under protest from the Keokuk manager, but as it later was won by this team the protest was not ...

Mets give up too much to get Tyler Clippard - Keith Law Blog - ESPN (INSIDER)

Keith Law does not like this deal.

As far as what the A’s got back, Casey Meisner was my sleeper pitching prospect for the Mets this year, and has indeed had a breakout season in Savannah. He would now rank sixth in the Mets’ system, behind Dominic Smith (who ranked No. 40 on my last updated global prospect ranking), Amed Rosario, Gavin Cecchini, Michael Fulmer and Wuilmer Becerra (although you could argue Meisner belongs ahead of Becerra too). The 6-foot-8 right-hander is consistently ...
