Q&A: Dan Kantrovitz, St. Louis Cardinals Scouting Director

Some good info on their methods and philosophies.

On methodology and valuation: “When you talk about our methodology, it’s not rocket science. It’s more, ‘Find a reliable metric; see what’s worked in the past and use it as a guide going forward.’ As a scouting director, I need to be disciplined to implement it and sell it to our department of scouts, who might not always agree with what we think the optimal decision is.

“Basically, we translate every piece of available ...

Orioles Reach Extension with J.J. Hardy

Today’s workout at Camden Yards will include an announcement that the Orioles have reached agreement with shortstop J.J. Hardy on a contract extension, according to an industry source.

Hardy, 32, was a pending free agent. Expected negotiations weren’t held during spring training and the sides agreed to hold off discussions during the regular season.

Hardy’s extension covers the next three seasons. FOX Sports is reporting that the value is north of $40 million.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-9-2014

United Press via Toledo News-Bee, October 9, 1914:

George Stallings, manager of the Boston Braves, appeased his desire for punching some one’s head today, when a fan became overserious in expressing his praise of the Athletics in Stallings’ presence. The unlucky fan was P.J. Callahan, who wore a tourist badge.

“We’ll show them,” chortled Callahan, kidding the Brave players in the lobby of the Majestic hotel. Then he ambled over to Stallings and repeated. Stallings grabbed Callahan and threw him ...

How will Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals seize what is left of their championship windows? - NY Daily News

If they are looking for good chemistry in the clubhouse, maybe the Dodgers should exchange Colletti for Kevin Towers.

Good luck trying to get a solid read on the mood of the current team, or Mattingly’s ability to manage the egos. During the season, Dodgers people spoke of a deep disconnect among the players, the old “25 cabs for 25 guys” syndrome and a lack of chemistry.

“I don’t think that’s how you win a championship,” said one Dodgers person.

But team chemistry is highly ...

Heyman: Royals to make run at Shields as free agent; playoff run helps

The Royals were originally believed only to have a shot to keep Shields if they went far in the playoffs, but sources say the team informed Shields’ agent Page Odle way back around the trade deadline—well before their amazing postseason run, which will bolster their revenues big-time—that they would indeed make an effort to keep him with a multiyear deal.

Seeing the headline and the byline I would have bet anything that Shields was a Boras client but apparently not.

Anyway, Shields ...

Report: Dodgers GM Ned Colletti may be on the hot seat

Ken Rosenthal       ✔ @Ken_Rosenthal

Feeling among number of #Dodgers people is that GM Colletti is on hot seat, and that ownership has softer spot for Mattingly. We shall see.

After watching that Cardinal series, Ned isn’t the one I’d be leaning toward firing.  Although he is largely responsible for constructing what turned out to be a pretty useless bullpen.

The so called tuning up process Wednesday of the present world’s champions and the winners of the National league pennant was of a mild character. Neither Connie Mack nor Manager Stallings premitted his men to do any extended work.

How the Cardinals became baseball’s best franchise | New York Post

I’d say we should wait until the end of this year’s postseason to make that determination.

No, the Dodgers don’t rank second behind St. Louis in the “Model franchise” standings, and neither do the Yankees. Maybe it’s the Giants, with their third NLCS appearance in five years, though they haven’t qualified for two straight postseasons since 2002-03. It certainly isn’t the Red Sox, who have registered two last-place finishes in the last three seasons.
You could make a case for the ...

harrrumpphh! (BBC, drop me a line please)

Roger Clemens said it’s time for the Astros to start winning.

“They’re not kids anymore and the learning process is over, it’s time to win,” the former Astros pitcher and current special assistant said at the team’s charity golf event on Monday. “I was in the World Series at 23, 24 years old. Matt Williams and the Great Bullpen Screw-Up | FOX Sports

Ouch.

As an outsider, we can’t know about the internal dynamics of the clubhouse and how well Williams might or might not have handled the aspects of his job that we never see. But part of his job is also to make decisions during the games that give his team the best chance to win, and in the biggest game of his managerial career, he made a series of poor decisions that directly led to the run that eliminated his team from the postseason. The Nationals’ offense didn’t do Williams any favors in ...

Qualifying offer for MLB free agents set at $15.3M - ESPN

That’s a lot of coin to turn down and then get saddled with draft pick compensation.

The price of qualifying offers for eligible free agents has risen to $15.3 million from $14.1 million.

James Shields, who has led the Royals into the ALCS, is one of several big-name players who likely will turn down a $15.3 million qualifying offer and instead elect free agency.
The 8.5 percent increase was finalized Tuesday by Major League Baseball and the players’ association. It is up from $13.3 million ...

Back pain pulls prospect Butler out of AFL | rockies.com

Butler missed time midseason because of a strained right rotator cuff, which showed up after his Major League debut on June 6. Butler rehabbed, then finished the season at Double-A Tulsa before returning to the Majors for two late-season starts—a six-inning, one-run effort in a win over the D-backs on Sept. 20, and a 4 2/3-inning struggle in a loss to the Dodgers on Sept. 27.
After his final start, Butler reported unusual soreness in his upper back/shoulder area. The Rockies made the decision ...

Matt Kemp and the Problem With the Umpire Strike Zone | FanGraphs Baseball

How often exactly is that pitch called a ball? It seems to me Kemp could have easily been called out on strikes on the first pitch but wasn’t. When talking about a 0.2 inch difference, I get that two nearly identical pitches were called differently, two nearly identical pitches which, in isolation, could easily be accepted as either a ball or a strike. Matt Kemp should have swung at one of them.

The setting for you: 3-1 Cardinals, top 9, Kemp leading off against Trevor Rosenthal. With the count ...

AJC:O’Brien: Braves bringing back former scouting chief Roy Clark

An aggressive reshaping of the Braves front office continues with the return of longtime former scouting chief Roy Clark and the promotion of highly regarded scout Brian Bridges to scouting director.

Cardinals Fans Get Ugly In Clash With Ferguson Protesters

·We start off with a bang. At about the 22-second mark, an old white Cardinals fan begins telling the protesters—all of whom appear to be black—that they need to get jobs. He looks right in the camera, proudly, and says, “That’s right! If they’d be working, we wouldn’t have this problem!”
·At the 2:40 mark, they start saying much worse things. The “Let’s go Cardinals!” chant has turned into a “Let’s go Darren (police officer who killed Mike Brown)!” chant. Cool. ...

Sportsnet: Davidi: Lack of trust impacted 2014 Blue Jays all season

A lack of talent also didn’t help.

While some [players] would have been content with Prado and a reliever, others were angry that the Blue Jays couldn’t pull off a bigger deal for someone like David Price, Jeff Samardzija or Jon Lester. When told of the asking prices – it started at Marcus Stroman and Drew Hutchison for the first two, and Bautista for option three – a few players balked, refusing to believe the acquisition cost was so high. “If they didn’t get that, how can they ask ...

Neyer: You can take the boy out of the country ...

“You know, I’ve been working out, eating better. Just wondering if you wanted to get a cup of coffee, Royals. Thinking maybe we should get back together.”

Which of course is the last little piece of this: The Kansas City Royals, for almost exactly as long as I’ve had any sort of opinion about how baseball teams should be run, have been run in almost exactly the opposite way. And the unhappy (for me) truth is that if the Royals win the World Series, it will be taken as absolute proof in ...
