The international stage is set for Tuesday’s opening of the historic two-game series where newly established “Team Europe” will make its world premiere against the top-ranked Japanese National Team at the iconic Tokyo Dome on 10-11 March.

There will be a live broadcast of the two-game series (Game times: 18:00 Japanese Standard Time). The games will be televised free-to-air nationally across Japan by the Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS). In Europe, Eurosport 2 will broadcast the games live ...

Tigers infielder George Moriarty quoted in the Pittsburgh Press, March 10, 1915:

It happened in our world’s series with the Chicago Cubs—the first one.

Denard Span out at least 4-6 weeks

Washington is the favorite for the pennant? Nat so fast.

Washington center fielder Denard Span had surgery Monday to repair a right core muscle injury and will miss the Nationals’ opener next month.

Manager Matt Williams said the projected time for Span’s return is uncertain and added “you’re looking at four-to-six weeks before he can start doing baseball activity again.”

Span had surgery to repair a sports hernia injury in December and reported discomfort at the start of spring training, ...

“All you have to do is get some smoke out there and, trust me, I’m from the country, I live in the country. You take some smoke out there and you smoke the hive, ‘cause the queen’s in there somewhere, then you get a ShopVac and you suck ‘em all in, take ‘em outside the park and let ‘em all go.”

MLB union chief: Designated hitter in NL still a ‘topic of discussion’

I’ll take “‘80s sports talk topics” for $800, Alex.

For more than 40 years, the National League has remained free of the designated hitter, but that could change in the future, according to MLB players’ union chief Tony Clark.

“That topic has come up independently of us bringing it up,” Clark said to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “It has been a topic, as I’m sure you know, a topic of discussion going back the last two bargaining agreements. Nothing has changed at this point in time. But I am ...

There’s nothing new in preferring the old

F.C. Lane was a baseball writer who in 1907 founded Baseball Magazine and dedicated himself to challenging conventional wisdom about the game. Besides publishing traditional baseball stories and interviews with players of the day, he delved deep into statistical analysis at a time when the lack of computers made such a pursuit fiendishly difficult.

In 1916, Lane published an article headlined, “Why the System of Batting Averages Should Be Changed.” The article can (and should) be read in its ...

R.I. Native Covers All The Bases for Red Sox Players

Take it from three-time All-Star Hanley Ramirez, who met Ferreira more than a decade ago when he was an 18-year-old Red Sox prospect coming out of the Dominican Republic to play in the United States for the first time.
“She (Raquel Ferreira) was everything for us,” Ramirez said. “She helped us with everything we needed. She always was there for us. She was like family to us. She has always been.”
Everything? Really? There’s no way to narrow it down?
Ramirez opened his mouth wide to ...

A’s facing a major power outage in 2015 - Spring Training Blog - ESPN

The A’s certainly won’t be a powerhouse on the position player side. If you look at BB-Ref’s Positional Comparisons it looks like the rebuilt A’s have the potential to put at least similar WAA on the position player side as they did last year. Ben Zobrist (5.0 bWAR) is a big upgrade at 2B (Oakland -1.4 bWAR last year). This one pick-up can have a big impact. The keys, however, are Marcus Semien and Brett Lawrie. If Semien can provide slightly above average play at SS and Lawrie can stay on the ...

Pittsburgh Press, March 9, 1915:

The testimony of several big league ball players will be heard in the Spokane [Washington] county Superior court when the suit brought by M.B. Martin, a local photographer, for damages of $2,540 against “Cozy” Dolan, noted outfielder and baseball comedian, comes to trial.

Martin alleges that Dolan grabbed the crank of his motion picture machine during an exhibition game [in Spokane] last October, between the all-National and all-American baseball teams, and ...

Baseball Ops: Welcome to the Evolution « Our Game

Beane is still a step or two ahead.

Twelve years later, the debate is mainly over. The specific arguments raised by Moneyball have appropriately been adopted or rejected, the best run teams today are using both traditional scouting and evidence-based analytics, and the two schools are working together. Whatever advantage Beane held over his contemporaries in 2003 he holds no longer. Market inefficiencies last only as long as the market stands still, and baseball teams are constantly searching ...

BCB: Let’s Talk About Ballpark Food

Cubs decide to ban outside food from their spring training ballpark.  It was apparently an overnight decision.  Key bit:

I heard from a large number of people angry that they couldn’t bring peanuts or sunflower seeds into the ballpark. Really, Cubs? Really? REALLY? This sort of thing has been a time-honored tradition for decades—you buy a bag of peanuts outside the park from one of the street vendors and bring it inside. Or bring a sandwich from home, as I was going to today.

Beyond the ...

Drew Smyly injury a blow to Rays’ pitching depth | Tampa Bay Times

Having No. 3 starter Drew Smyly sidelined indefinitely, with his availability to start the season in question due to shoulder tendinitis, is bad enough news for the Rays.

“I think it’s fair to say there is a concern,” manager Kevin Cash said Sunday.

Worse is that the depth after their top four starters was already one of the biggest questions, and potential flaws, of several on their roster anyway.

Royals sign 6-10 righty Chris Young and expect him in pitching staff this season

Young, 35, and a former National League All-Star, signed an incentive-laden, one-year major-league contract with the Royals on Saturday. Young, a 10-year career starter with four clubs, will begin the season as a middle and long reliever and provide insurance for the starting rotation.

“He will make the team out of spring training,” general manager Dayton Moore said. “Right now, if things go to script, our rotation is probably cemented with the main five guys, so his role at this point ...

Silverman consulting with Rays players on key decisions | Tampa Bay Times

Much of what Matt Silverman has done since taking over as head of Rays baseball operations is similar to what Andrew Friedman did before him.

But one thing he has done differently — and interestingly — is soliciting opinions from a small group of key players before making decisions on hiring manager Kevin Cash and other moves and changes.
