Former Marlin Justin Wayne Sentenced To 4 Years In Prison For Con Involving Drug Addicts’ Urine

Justin Wayne was a bust. The fifth overall pick in the 2000 MLB draft, Wayne appeared in just 26 games over three seasons with the Florida Marlins, putting up an ERA over 6 (but earning a World Series ring along the way). Wayne’s post-baseball career was more successful, and more lucrative, at least right until he got busted for a bizarre insurance fraud which involved purchasing the urine of drug addicts.

Thursday in federal court West Palm Beach, Fla., Wayne was sentenced to 46 months in ...

World Series trophy broken by flying beer can, now fixed

We wrote yesterday about how Mookie Betts had a bit of trouble catching an inbound beer can during the Red Sox’ World Series parade. That can, it seems, was not the biggest problem.

Other fans on the parade route threw cans at players and Red Sox officials, with at least six getting arrested for disorderly conduct. One of them was nabbed after hitting a team photographer, Jason Varitek’s wife and Alex Cora’s daughter. None of them were hurt.

The same cannot be said for the World Series ...

Will Freeze or Frenzy Face 2018 Free Agent Class?

The flame of baseball’s Hot Stove League turns to “high” when the sun comes up Saturday. That’s when free agents are free to sign with any team.

But neither players nor teams are in any rush to sign.

The hundred-or-so players whose contracts have expired are just the first wave in a periodic deluge of athletes who can sell themselves to any team at any price.

A general discussion of free agency for this off-season, and this thread is as good a place for us to have that discussion as ...

DSPN: Carlos Beltran And His Family Dressed Up As Carlos Beltran

Carlos Beltran, his wife Jessica, and his three kids pulled off a stellar group costume for Halloween this year by going as ... Carlos Beltran on all his former baseball teams. Even the cat, dog, and fish participated.

OT - Catch-All Pop Culture Extravaganza (November 2018)

Before she arrived on the Vancouver set of Deadpool 2 in mid-August 2017, Joi Harris had never performed a stunt. She’d never been anywhere near a movie or TV set, for that matter. Producers and studio 20th Century Fox wanted an African-American double for Zazie Beetz, who’d been cast in the role of Domino. They hired Harris, 40, who had done some motorcycle racing, and flew her in a couple of days before the shoot. The sequence was pretty straightforward. It called for a rider, sitting astride ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-2-2018

Washington Times, November 2, 1918:

Larry Chappelle [sic], hard-hitting outfielder, for whom Charley Comiskey of the Chicago White Sox paid $10,000 several years ago, is seriously ill with Spanish influenza at the Letterman Service Hospital [in San Francisco] today.

If it weren’t for horrible luck, Larry Chappell wouldn’t have had any luck at all. He hit .305 with Milwaukee in the American Association from 1912-1913, so Comiskey went out and spent a truckload of cash (I’ve seen at least three ...

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. And Other Top Prospects On Display At Fall Stars Game

The Arizona Fall League has been a breeding ground for some of baseball’s most prized prospects since its inaugural 1992 season, a showcase that plays out for approximately six weeks in half a dozen Phoenix-area stadiums each year. Every August it’s decided who will play in the AFL, with six minor leaguers from each organization making the initial cut.

Historically, over half of the youngsters that participate in the AFL end up on a Major League roster at some point, with many developing into ...

Did Manny Machado say goodbye to Dodgers with ‘thank you’ Instagram post?

Four-time All-Star Manny Machado is ready to strike it rich in free agency this winter. The only question is which team will be willing to pony up perhaps as much as $300 million to sign him.

One team that certainly has the money is the Los Angeles Dodgers. That’s where Machado finished the 2018 season after being acquired from the Baltimore Orioles in July. But many are wondering if Machado’s already closed the door on a Hollywood return based on this “thank you” Instagram post he ...

SportsRadioPD: Barrett: Divorce Was Inevitable For The A’s and 95.7 The Game

The problems with selling Green and Gold in a sea of Orange. Or: why the A’s were never going to get A-grade radio coverage in the Bay Area, and never accepted it.

There was also a public perception that the team wouldn’t spend money to retain key players, the stadium they played in was a mess, and ownership made it worse by continuing to tell the public they wanted no part of being in Oakland. The vibe all the way around was negative. Meanwhile, the teams across the street seemed to have ...

The Dodgers have become baseball’s version of the 1990s Buffalo Bills

“The makeup of the teams is even similar. The Bills were loaded with stars and future Hall of Famers in quarterback Jim Kelly, running back Thurman Thomas and defensive end Bruce Smith. Is that much different than the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw, Yasiel Puig and Justin Turner?”

Charlie Brown | Society for American Baseball Research

Good stuff.

Much of Charlie Brown’s home life also remains shrouded in mystery. What is known is that his father is a barber and his mother is a homemaker. He also has a younger sister, Sally, and the aforementioned pet, Snoopy. His exact place of residence is unknown, but the climate is cold enough for there to be heavy snow in winter. Charlie Brown has been known to stand upon his snow-blanketed pitcher’s mound while dreaming of future glory, only to be rudely brought back to reality by ...

For Orioles, let history be your guide, hire a general manager first – The Athletic

It’s tough to grade Duquette. Peter Angelos wasn’t the kind of owner who gives his GM any real autonomy.

The Duquette era was always about making marginal moves and hoping they turned into gold under Showalter’s direction–and in fairness, sometimes they did. But a lot of this team was built on the structure of what came before — both the 2012 and 2014 teams were stocked with guys acquired by Andy MacPhail, Duquette’s predecessor — and eventually when those guys started getting long in ...

Moose is loose from Brewers; Soria also elects free agency

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Mike Moustakas is becoming a free agent again, and so is reliever Joakim Soria.

In addition, the Brewers exercised a $3,175,000 option on All-Star right-hander Jeremy Jeffress, who would have been eligible for salary arbitration if it had been declined.

Moustakas declined a $15 million mutual option Tuesday.

So, will he have any better luck than he did last year?

MLB Rumors: Giants Interested in Farhan Zaidi for President of Baseball Ops.

The San Francisco Giants have reportedly expanded their search for a president of baseball operations to their archrivals.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, San Francisco is “interested” in Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi for the role. While Morosi cautioned it is “unclear if the scenario is viable,” he noted the interest could be the reason San Francisco’s search has been somewhat slow.

This comes after Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reported the Giants interviewed ...

As expected, Giants exercise options on Madison Bumgarner, Pablo Sandoval

In moves that were expected, the Giants on Monday exercised their 2019 contract options on pitcher Madison Bumgarner and infielder Pablo Sandoval.

Bumgarner will earn at least $12 million in the final year of the long-term deal he signed in 2012. That is the listed salary, but it likely has grown some through escalators based on performance milestones.

The Giants again will pay Sandoval the major-league minimum, around $545,000, in the final year of the five-year deal he signed with Boston ...

In early World Series odds for 2019, Tigers near the bottom

The Boston Red Sox exercised the contract option for ace starter Chris Sale on Tuesday, their first offseason move as 2018 World Series champions.

They’re also favorites to do it again.

Las Vegas says the Red Sox have the best odds to win the 2019 World Series. Bovada puts the Sox at 13:2, just above the Houston Astros (7:1), Los Angeles Dodgers (8:1) and New York Yankees (8:1).

Because it is never too early to speculate on these matters….
