Commissioner says MLB is open to new Rays stadium in St. Petersburg

The Brinks truck wasn’t big enough.

Manfred said he was “disappointed” the Rays and Tampa leaders couldn’t work out a deal for the Ybor site by the Dec. 31 expiration of the “free look” agreement. He sent a strongly worded letter to Hillsborough officials pointing out how their offer was incomplete in advance of the Rays announcing in December that they were ending talks.

Mets’ Zack Wheeler has the stuff for a Cy Young season

With his injury history, I can’t see the Mets locking him up without a highly discounted price tag.

The right-hander would be a terrific fit for the Braves — he lives outside Atlanta — so the Mets need to make sure they can keep Wheeler in their rotation for the long haul.

“I’m here right now, [and] that’s all I’m worried about,” Wheeler said about his upcoming free-agent status after participating in his first day of pre-camp, at one point throwing a bullpen session alongside ...

Long-suffering Padres fans can’t wait to see Tatis Jr.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — With a mighty bat flip and joyous home run trot in winter ball, Fernando Tatis Jr. stirred a frenzy among long-suffering San Diego Padres fans eager to see the hotshot shortstop prospect make it to the big leagues.

Tatis’ bat flip after hitting a walk-off homer in a Dominican Winter League playoff game in early January went viral on social media. Fans envision the 20-year-old doing it at Petco Park, perhaps with fewer theatrics than players can get away with in winter ...

We Put Bryce Harper And Manny Machado On A Bunch Of Different Teams

We are now less than a week away from almost all pitchers and catchers reporting, and the two biggest free agents on the market — Manny Machado and Bryce Harper — have yet to sign. The rumor mill around them continues to swirl, but we’re tired of not knowing for sure where these two will play this year. So we thought we’d take matters into our own hands, instead of simply waiting around for the latest hot-stove updates.

To that end, we called on our friends at Out of the Park Baseball ...

AP sources: Mets-Nats or Cubs-Cards for London in 2020

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Major League Baseball is considering one of two matchups for its 2020 series in London: New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals or Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals.

Two people familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press of the potential matchups. They spoke on condition of anonymity Friday because no announcements had been authorized. An announcement is expected after opening day this year.

I thought the point of these games was to encourage baseball in the ...

Healthy Wainwright optimistic heading into season for Cards

ST. LOUIS (AP) — At 37, Adam Wainwright remains confident in his ability to still be effective on the mound for the Cardinals.

Wainwright made just eight starts in an injury-plagued 2018 season, giving up 12 earned runs on 22 hits in 22 1-3 innings. He still struck out 25 and walked just four, but it was a frustrating season: He had a hamstring injury and started the season on the disabled list. He came back and made three starts. Then he returned to the 60-day DL with a sore right elbow.

Manfred: No DH or draft changes likely for 2019

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Don’t look for a National League designated hitter this year or for new anti-tanking rules in June’s amateur draft.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said Friday that management is focused on pace-of-game changes for 2019 and bolder ideas proposed by the players’ association are too complex to be put in place for this season.

Speaking Friday after an owners’ meeting, Manfred felt encouraged the union responded to management’s proposal for a pitch clock and a ...

Yordano Ventura’s guaranteed contract still not paid two years after death; estate is broke

Two years after Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura died in a single-car crash in his native Dominican Republic, the $20.25 million remaining on his contract has not been paid.

And his estate is broke.

Ventura’s 5-year-old daughter is listed as the sole heir of his estate, according to court documents. As the executor of the estate, her mother has hired attorneys to pursue the money left on the contract. The matter is currently being negotiated between Major League Baseball and the MLB Players ...

Buster Posey’s praise for Giants ‘win-now’ approach comes at awkward time

San Francisco Giants star Buster Posey isn’t the most outspoken athlete you’ll find on social media, but he certainly had an interesting, if not awkwardly-timed thought to share on Friday.

The post that caught everyone’s attention was a response to a tweet quoting Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler. In said tweet, Kapler discussed how Philadelphia’s trade for All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto cemented that they’re going all-in to win in 2019 and beyond.

Posey, who’s been part ...

CBS Sports:  MLB rumors: Agents for Bryce Harper, Manny Machado still seeking $300M deals; inside Marlins-Phillies trade

This is hilarious.  Hill. Air. E. Us.

Harper’s agent, Scott Boras, and Machado’s agent, Dan Lozano, both are believed to be seeking at least $300 million. Neither wants to sign first, knowing once one of the players goes off the board, the other will benefit from gaining the sole attention of the remaining suitors.

So all of the angst over Harper and Machado not signing?  Their agent’s are behind it, not the teams.

This college pitcher has the most insane pitching windup of all time

Section 8.01 (a) of the MLB Rulebook (sorry, I don’t have a Junior College rulebook at the ready) covers the rules about what seperates a legal windup from an illegal one. Let’s go beat by beat to see if Michael’s windup passes the test.

“The pitcher shall stand facing the batter, his pivot foot in contact with the pitcher’s plate and the other foot free.” Check.

“From this position any natural movement associated with his delivery of the ball to the batter commits him to the pitch without ...

Toledo News-Bee, February 8, 1919:

Buck Weaver points out that as he has a better fielding and batting average than Eddie Collins, who gets $15,000 a year from the White Sox, he’s entitled to a $2000 increase. Buck may be a better hitter and fielder, but Eddie has a million average in coaxing skill.

It takes a remarkable amount of chutzpah for a good but not great player to demand a raise because he’s better than Eddie Collins. If it really went down that way, it couldn’t have gone over well in ...

New Rangers manager has 20-somethings and revamped rotation

The Texas Rangers are not only young, with all those 20-something position players, they go into spring training with a first-time manager and without the retired Adrian Beltre at third base.

Steinbrenner: ‘I Get Hammered Every Year About Something’

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Hal Steinbrenner had heard the constant criticism in New York: Why haven’t the Yankees tried to sign Bryce Harper or Manny Machado?

“I get hammered every year about something,” the New York owner said Thursday. “If you don’t win the World Series, that’s perfectly justifiable.”

Speaking at the owners’ meetings, Steinbrenner would not rule out more moves before opening day but sounded as if a deal for a high-priced free agent is unlikely.

MLB ‘disabled list’ to be renamed ‘injured list’

Major League Baseball’s “disabled list” will be renamed the “injured list,” a person with direct knowledge of the proposal confirmed to USA TODAY Sports.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the league had not yet made an announcement. ESPN first reported the plan.

The new designation intends to reflect that injured players do not in fact, have a disability.

Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem said Thursday the change is being made at the suggestion of advocacy groups.

How To Save MLB Free Agency

So how would restricted free agency help beyond getting players to the market earlier? It should also increase their share of revenue.

Players with more than three years of service time but less than six are eligible for arbitration. The first year of arbitration eligibility is supposed to garner a player about 40 percent of their open-market value, the second year 60 percent, and the third year of arbitration approximately 80 percent, though that estimate does not always apply. While ...
