‘Trails end, baby, they all end’: Texas removes Augie Garrido after 20 seasons

For someone who has played and coached baseball for the better part of 70 years, Augie Garrido surprisingly says he doesn’t love the sport. After particularly excruciating losses, Garrido has been known to dip into his bank of one-liners and damn the game “a cruel mistress.”

On Monday, he learned just how cruel it can be. At a morning meeting with athletic director Mike Perrin, Texas ended months of speculation and dismissed Garrido, college baseball’s winningest coach, for not winning ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-31-2016

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, May 31, 1916:

Manager Charles (Buck) Herzog of the Reds was struck on the head and rendered unconscious by a thrown ball shortly before [yesterday’s] game started. Ivy Wingo was warming up the pitchers and threw one a little wild which struck the manager on the side of his head as he was running to his position.

Herzog did not regain his senses for 15 minutes, the athlete recoving consciousness in the club house. He told the writer after the game that he would be able ...

WaPo: Could Daniel Murphy Hit .400?

Realistically, the answer is “no, of course not.” But my God what an unexpectedly great signing for the Nationals. 2.5 WAR already and the season is only 1/3rd over.

PHILADELPHIA — Read the headline. Shake your head. Dismiss the notion. Could Daniel Murphy hit .400? Of course not, silly. What a preposterous notion. As crazy as, for example, as the third second baseman the Washington Nationals pursued this offseason turning into the one of the 10 best players in the National League by Wins ...

OTP 2016 May 31: Trump campaign eyeing big stadium for acceptance speech

Donald Trump’s campaign is considering booking one of Cleveland’s big sports venues for his acceptance speech in July, two GOP sources familiar with the planning of the upcoming GOP convention say.

Lohud Yankees Blog: ‘Long run, this should make (Severino) better’

“I think when you look at Luis, you’re looking at long term,” manager Joe Girardi said. “Long term, we have to get this straightened out. This isn’t a guy that’s 34, 35 (years old) that has a long track record. This is a kid with a lot of talent, and we want, the next time he comes up, to be a finished product. He came up last year—some of it was based on need—and did very well. Sometimes when you enter your second season and people have seen you, you have to make adjustments probably ...

They aren’t all coming up this year. At least they aren’t all pitching in the rotation this year.

What you have to like if your office is on Federal Street, or if you’re a fan of the club, is that not only do the Pirates have the third best record in the NL, they have three of the International League’s top nine ERA leaders: Chad Kuhl leads the IL in ERA (1.03), Jameson Taillon is fourth (1.82), and Tyler Glasnow (2.25) is ninth.

Cwik (BLS): A 92-year-old WWII vet threw our favorite Memorial Day first pitch

Rumor has it a Braves scout was checking out the southpaw.

While a number of our veterans acquitted themselves well when it comes to the national pastime, our favorite Memorial Day first pitch came courtesy of Burke Waldron. Waldron, a 92-year-old World War II veteran, threw out the first pitch prior to Sunday’s Seattle Mariners game.

As the Mariners announced just prior to Waldron taking the field, the 92-year-old navy veteran began his military service in 1943. He served at Pearl Harbor for ...

Cardinals notes: Punishment for hacking ‘unlikely’ before this June’s draft | St. Louis Cardinals | stltoday.com

The sentencing hearing for former Cardinals executive Chris Correa has been delayed several times, and as a result the commissioner’s office has not resolved its investigation into Correa’s admission that he illegally entered the Houston Astros’ database. The Cardinals have been braced for punishment of some kind, but the timing has been unclear. Two sources with knowledge of the commissioner’s thinking said it would be “unlikely” that any punishment could be exacted before this ...

Ryan Braun out with neck injury vs. Reds | MLB.com

On the same day the Boston Globe quoted one National League scout as saying Ryan Braun is “the hot name out there” on the trade market, that name was again absent from the Brewers’ starting lineup. And this time, it’s a new physical ailment.

A stiff neck sidelined Braun for the start of Sunday’s series finale against the Reds at Miller Park, marking the eighth time in the Brewers’ last 14 games that Braun was on the bench for the opening pitch.

MLB has lost its way with replay, Chase Utley Rule

“Prince of Darkness” Tom Haudricourt with some valid criticism of the demise of the neighborhood play and instant replay.

So, in the top of the ninth inning Saturday night with the score tied, 6-6, the Reds had the bases loaded with one down. Adam Duvall, whose three-run homer capped a five-run rally in the seventh that erased the Brewers’ seemingly safe 6-1 lead, grounded into what appeared to be a routine 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

But, wait a minute. The Reds’ video replay ...

Yu Darvish wins in return to Major Leagues | MLB.com

Darvish showed up before a sellout crowd and pitched like he had never been away. The only tangible difference was that the outing was a little shorter than normal, but other than that, Darvish looked to be at his best in holding the Pirates to one run in five innings. He walked one, struck out seven and left after 81 pitches.

“Physically I could go more innings, but mentally I was done,” Darvish said.

Terse Clay Buchholz doesn’t appear happy with move to bullpen | Boston Herald

If he pitched better, he’d still be in the rotation.

Clay Buchholz didn’t belabor the point as he does innings.

The Red Sox righthander for the second straight day on Saturday declined an interview about his move to the bullpen, telling the media waiting for him near his locker that he got moved to the bullpen and they should write it down, with a curse word mixed in as he walked away.

Red Sox bring back good memories for Ruben Amaro Jr.

Wow!

The numbers associated with the Red Sox that are really impressive? Those of groundskeeper Dave Mellor. He was in severe pain for years, but Mellor is finally feeling better. The reason? A medtronic spinal cord ...

How are you liking the decision to keep Matt Wieters now? - BaltimoreBaseball.com

Things can change in a hurry. Yesterday, the Indians stole five bases on Wieters (Jimenez 4, Givens 1), including SB by the speedy Lonnie Chisenhall, Mike Napoli, and Carlos Santana. So, I guess respect only goes so far.

Flash forward to now: Thanks to a torrid recent run, Wieters headed into Saturday slashing .292/.333/.451 with four homers and 16 RBIs. More important, he’s playing more often behind the plate and his defense has been noteworthy. His catcher’s ERA is 3.28, which is 13th ...

Syndergaard ejection exposes MLB’s lack of consistency | FOX Sports

What made Syndergaard’s pitch to Utley different?

“The ruling was that he intentionally threw at the batter,” crew chief Tom Hallion told a pool reporter. “And with that, we have a judgment of whether we thought it was intentional. And if it was, we can either warn or eject. And with what happened in that situation, we felt the ejection was warranted.”

Fine. Just tell me why Bush and Hughes were not ejected, along with many other pitchers who have commited similar acts. Just tell me why a ...

Padres discussing potential James Shields trade with White Sox | SanDiegoUnionTribune.com

The Padres are discussing a potential trade of right-hander James Shields with the Chicago White Sox, and it appears those talks have significant momentum, sources familiar with the discussions said Saturday.

It is unclear if a deal is imminent, but one source described the discussions as having “energy” at this current stage. While Shields has pitched well this season, posting a 3.06 ERA through 10 starts, the Padres are 10 games under .500 after Saturday night’s 8-7 loss to Arizona and would ...

Did the Tigers throw games in 1917 to help the White Sox win the pennant?

It’s likely that most players on both sides were aware of the arrangement, but most of them were not directly involved. In that era if a key player, a pitcher for example, wanted to make some extra cash he might “Have a bad game.” A pair of players: Detroit pitcher Bill James and White Sox shortstop Swede Risberg later claimed that as many as three Detroit pitchers were promised a reward if they were to perform poorly in the four-game set. Those pitchers were probably James, Bernie ...
