Mike Schmidt’s Casual Sexism

McCarthy: What were you going to say, Mike? That the throw was a bar of soap that Garcia threw to home plate?

Schmidt: Well, he did kind of throw it a little… I don’t know… are you allowed to say, a little bit…

Stairs: No.

Schmidt: …girlish, so to speak?

This is sexist for a very obvious reason, one which was apparent to all three members of the broadcast booth once the words left Schmidt’s mouth. In fact, Stairs seemed to know what Schmidt was going to say when he interjected ...

Hunter Pence discusses his rehab process, his scooter, Hunter Pence signs and the sights of Sacramento - Giants Extra

On the emotional aspect of his injury:

“Emotions are things you can somewhat control, especially since you can’t control when you get hit by a pitch in a certain way. So I tried to stay in positive spirits. I think I have some unrealistic expectations of coming back, but I don’t think it hurts to dream big. But the process, I just try to take it each moment, each day. Whatever they need me to do, whatever we can think of to intelligently get it going again. A lot of times you have to ...

A’s Jarrod Parker has broken bone in elbow - SFGate

— Jarrod Parker’s hideous injury Friday night was diagnosed Saturday as a fractured bone in his right elbow, right where the graft for his surgically reconstructed ligament is anchored.

Parker will require surgery of some sort, but trainer Nick Paparesta said it is unclear whether Parker will require what would be his third Tommy John surgery. Paparesta said, “As of right now, everything in that regard looks promising, but they really won’t know until they get in to fix the ...

Sunday Notes: Cleveland’s 18-hit CG, Ortiz, Murakami, more | FanGraphs Baseball

As always, good stuff from David Lauria.

I recently asked Dan Duquette how his team is able to keep outperforming projections. He looked at me with a bemused expression and replied, “So, you want the secret sauce?”

The Orioles’ mastermind – his official title is Executive VP, Baseball Operations – proceeded to list a few of the ingredients. He called Buck Showalter “a steadying influence.” He said the team likes “hard-working players who give their best effort when they come to ...

Adweek: 5 Entertaining Uses of MLB’s New Statcast Tracking Technology

While the novelty of knowing how high, far and fast every home run is hit might wear off, the defensive metrics Statcast reveals are, at least, entertaining—and probably useful for scouting purposes. But is the fan experience improved if baseball can quantify exactly how a player makes a great play, or is it more fun just to see it done? (MLB did not immediately respond to a request for comment on how Statcast will affect fan experience or viewership.)

Watch these five Statcast videos and ...

NY Daily News: Madden: MLB denies colluding with MLBPA on illegal A-Rod bonus deal

[Yankee president Randy] Levine presented the [milestone bonus] plan to [MLB Executive Vice President of Labor Relations Dan] Halem, who represented MLB, and Michael Weiner, the late executive director of the Players Association, to hammer out the separate agreement, which included the Yankees and A-Rod sharing any profits.

According to Halem, Orza, who CNN described as having “helped craft the MLB marketing agreement,” was in fact not a part of the direct negotiations nor present at any ...

MLB: Pirates stun Cardinals with first-ever 4-5-4 triple play in baseball history.

Here is a legitimate “you’ve never seen this before” play…because it has never, in the recorded history of Major League Baseball, happened before.

On the first pitch from Vance Worley, Yadier Molina ripped a line drive over second baseman Neil Walker’s head. Peralta and Heyward both expected the ball to clear Walker’s head, and thus took off.

But Walker leaped to snare the liner, and his throw to third baseman Jung Ho Kang doubled up Peralta. Heyward started back to second, but Kang’s toss to ...

BtBS: Has Tim Lincecum version 2.0 finally downloaded?

If the early returns this season represent a conscious change and not just a streak of luck, then Lincecum may have successfully re-invented himself. His FIP is at its lowest value since 2011 (his most recent valuable season), and he’s cut his HR/9 rate by 72.72%.

These positive results likely stem from Lincecum’s new ability to induce ground balls. Up until this season, his career GB% was 46.7%, just above the league average of 44%. In 2015 however, Lincecum has raised his GB% to a career ...

Fangraphs Chat w/ Jeff Sullivan

You are transported back in time to, say, 1960. You have none of your money or possessions. Assume you luck your way in to an assistant GM position in an MLB front office as a way of making a living. There is no Baseball-Reference. There is no Fangraphs. There is no Excel. How do you go about using your present knowledge of advanced baseball statistics to your advantage? How do you go about getting the GM to heed your advice?

Jeff Sullivan: Well, let’s see. Shifts would be easy enough. Very ...

Paine: Willie Mays Was Way Better Than Alex Rodriguez

Mays beats A-Rod by nine lengths.

An easy way to measure Mays’ dominance over A-Rod is to look at the all-time wins above replacement (WAR) leaderboard1. By total WAR, Mays ranks as the fifth most-productive player in major-league history, trailing only Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds and pitchers Cy Young and Walter Johnson. Mays also ranks as the third-best non-pitcher ever, according to JAWS, which attempts to balance a player’s aggregate WAR compilation against the brilliance of his peak. Among ...

A’s drop game on a night filled with losses

A wretched start to the season keeps getting worse for the A’s. In a matchup for last place in the division with the Mariners, Oakland succumbed 4-3 in 11 innings on Friday when Logan Morrison hit the first pitch of the inning from Dan Otero out to center. It was yet another one-run loss — the A’s major-league-leading ninth — and the ninth loss charged to the bullpen, which also wasted the lead in the seventh.

Jeffrey Deckman: PawSox owners’ woes a win for R.I. - Opinion - providencejournal.com - Providence, RI

I am as big a baseball fan as anyone. I’ve also followed the way sports teams have strong-armed and hoodwinked local and state governments to extort money to the detriment of taxpayers. The Pawsox owners don’t need public financing to make money. They only need it to make more money.

A fair deal can get made. The initial proposal is not a fair deal.

Sox ticket promotion a loss for taxpayers

The Ballpark Pass was a chance to watch weekday baseball during April and May this season for merely $2.64 per game.

The Sox, under an agreement with the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority, the public agency that owns The Cell, are required to pay a fee on each ticket sold beyond 1,930,000 in paid attendance. But that “ticket threshold,” according to the agreement, excludes tickets that are given to sponsors or sold for less than $3.

it wasn’t until 2008 the Sox even paid an annual fee to ...

Shoulder tendinitis sending Gausman to DL | orioles.com

So far this year, Gausman hasn’t taken the step to the next level that many, including me, expected. Maybe it’s physical.

“That’s a really driving force in a decision like this,” Showalter said. “That’s why I talk about the nine or 10 guys between Double- and Triple-A that we are excited about—Kevin is one of those guys. You never know what you are going to have next year. These are assets that you can’t afford to abuse in any form or fashion. We’re always going to err on that side. It’s hard to ...
