Continue to think like a GM. Some used to play. - Beyond the Box Score

There is a difference between saying “we can’t quantify it yet” and “it doesn’t exist”. Most sabermetricians I knew over the years believed the former not the later.

In the same way, the “grizzled scout” would have bet presumably large sums of money that pitch framing did exist and was worth something. Sabermetrics, still young and finding its place in the baseball world, bet against the grizzled scout. That was until Mike Fast—a ‘sabermetrician’ for the purposes of Corbett’s essay and this ...

Curtis Granderson: How Mets’ winning compares with Yankees’ | New York Post

The Mets have two world championships in their history — they last won it all in 1986 — and the Yankees have 27. But Granderson says the Mets can take back New York, at least for the moment.
“There is a lot of [Yankees] history that won’t be forgotten,” Granderson said. “Twenty-seven championships, the length that organization has been around, this organization has only been around since the 1960s. There is still a long time before you get to that point, but at the same time, you ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-29-2015

New York Tribune, September 29, 1915:

Night baseball at the Brooklyn Federal League grounds, which was to have been introduced to the public to-night in a scheduled game between the Brooklyn and Buffalo teams, has been deferred, and it is doubtful if the fans will have an opportunity of seeing a contest under novel conditions this season.

Lack of time for the completion of the towers and emergency lights and the difficulty in obtaining competent workment have delayed the project. The three ...

Rawlings, Minors announce Gold Glovers | News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

“Congratulations to the nine outstanding Minor League Baseball players who deservedly won the 2015 Rawlings Gold Glove Award,” said Mike Thompson, executive vice president and general manager of baseball for St. Louis-based Rawlings. “Minor League Baseball is and will always continue to be a great partner of Rawlings, and we knew the Rawlings Gold Glove Award would be a popular goal for many young players when we decided to rekindle this award platform in 2011.”

Changes are coming to the Nationals after disappointing season, brawl - The Washington Post

Thomas Boswell eviscerates the Nationals.

If Matt Williams had been at Ford’s Theatre in 1865, he would have loved the play. Did something go wrong? Nope, didn’t see a thing. Nobody said anything, either.

Vicesports-Gordon:hThe Revolution Will Be Meticulously Tracked: Welcome To The Statcast Era

Statcast measures every activity on the field down to the microsecond, including the very spin of the ball as it hurtles towards home plate. This is the first season the technology is active in all 30 stadiums, marking what several MLB employees referred to as the beginning of the Statcast Era. It could revolutionize the way baseball is watched, analyzed, taught, and even thought about, because it will give spectators and general managers alike a view of the game unlike ever before…..In the ...

Nationals suspend Jonathan Papelbon 4 games |

The Nationals acted on Monday after a dugout altercation between two of their players on Sunday. Washington announced that closer Jonathan Papelbon has been suspended for four games without pay after his confrontation with outfielder Bryce Harper in Sunday’s game’s against the Phillies.

The Nationals also said that Papelbon has elected to drop his appeal of a suspension issued by Major League Baseball last stemming from his actions in a game on Wednesday against Baltimore. Papelbon was ...

Jake Arrieta’s dominance deserves the NL Cy Young Award

Pitching under a blood moon, Chicago Cubs right-handed ace Jake Arrieta didn’t change into some kind of beast. He was his normal every-five-days self on Sunday night, which is to say he was almost perfect, almost unhittable and the best pitcher in baseball.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-28-2015

Seattle Star, September 28, 1915:

Ty Cobb stole third while Ownie Bush was standing on the bag in yesterday’s game with the Senators. Players of both sides were so astonished they were helpless. Cobb was first to realize his mistake and started back for second, Shanks tagging him out. Cobb was so angry he was ruled off the field.

I imagine Donie Bush probably realized Cobb’s mistake before Ty did: “Wait, what? Does he not see me standing here on third base?” ...Read More...

CJ Nitkowski: In Jonathan Papelbon-Bryce Harper fight, media has lost objectivity; players overwhelmingly support pitcher | FOX Sports

A different take and some great points by CJ Nitkowski. Papelbon is a wildcard but Harper seems like the kind of guy who, if he doesn’t change, won’t be around long when his talent starts to diminish.

Papelbon is everybody’s favorite punching bag but it’s not deserved here. This is a game that governs itself; it always has and always will. No one is above giving his full effort every time. When you don’t, there will be a veteran teammate there waiting to remind you. Sometimes that might ...

red sox - Don Orsillo keeps taking high road, and NESN keeps insulting him - WEEI | John Tomase

Between all the negative leaks when people are headed out of town and the bungling of the broadcast team, it’s not a reach to think there are some real jerks at the top in Boston.

(As an aside, with Larry Lucchino forced into an emeritus position, Werner seems intent on filling the power vacuum. If his handling of Orsillo – a TV matter that’s supposedly his area of expertise – is any indication, how should we feel about him having more of a say in decisions impacting the on-field product?)

Harper vs. Papelbon a precursor to offseason shakeup in D.C. | FOX Sports

The Nationals are a mess.

Yes, Harper risked a reaction—and elicited an overreaction—first by failing to run, then by appearing to tell Papelbon, “let’s go,” after Pap confronted him. Tell another player, “let’s go,” and maybe he drops it or resumes the discussion later. Utter those words to a pit bull— er, Papelbon—and it’s game on.

Whatever, Papelbon vs. Harper was a mere symptom of the larger disease. This is the fourth straight year that the Nats’ season will end in ...

Boswell: Fight between Papelbon, Harper turns Nationals wake into a public viewing

If you’ve lost even Boz, you’ve lost.

Of course, the ruckus started in the Nats’ favorite inning for disasters involving relievers: the eighth. Why rewrite a polished script? The bullpen’s trashed everything else this year, why not fight the likely NL MVP? Fan Appreciation Day, indeed.

After the game, the Nats had their annual “Shirts Off Their Backs” promotion with each player handing his game-worn jersey to a contest-winning fan. The Nats should make sure two fans receive the first ...

Brewers’ New G.M. Looks to Change Story Line - The New York Times

“Every organization and every situation needs to plot its own course,” he said. “No two situations are exactly the same, and the Astros’ was about as unique as you could possibly find. This is a different situation with different challenges.”
“Player development and scouting — and acquiring controllable major league players — is really the priority of the organization,” Stearns said. “So the energy and attention that perhaps in the past was given to a certain level of ...

Cardinals Insider: Heyward’s value adds up in many ways : Sports

Heyward will likely join a market that has outfielders with more power, Yoenis Cespedes and Justin Upton, and some standout aces, lefty David Price and possibly Greinke. No standout will be as young as him. Not one can invite bets on his upside like he can.

Among his peers in right field, Heyward ranks sixth in average, 16th in slugging percentage (.433), and 11th in OPS (.785). The corner outfield positions have traditionally been power sources. Five of the top 10 in homer totals this season ...
