Cardinals loosen reins on Grichuk | St. Louis Cardinals | stltoday.com

“He needs to be Randal,” hitting coach John Mabry said.

That’s something Moss has wanted to talk to Grichuk about.

An unapologetic slugger who was in Triple-A at 27 when he accepted his swing, Moss recently loaded up a bushel of statistics on his phone to show Grichuk. Moss researched information on BrooksBaseball.net (a database of granular pitching data), FanGraphs (a progressive statistical site), and Baseball-Reference.com (baseball heaven, online). The stats illustrated how other ...

No, the Tigers-Red Sox day game on Thursday is not part of a conspiracy theory

The baseball schedule can be tough, especially come August, but some in Boston believe this is more than just some bad scheduling luck. At least one columnist, Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, suggests that the day game in Detroit on Thursday may have something to do with the Tigers former relationship with Sox’ president Dave Dombrowski:

The Red Sox tried to get the Tigers to push the start time back to late afternoon or evening when the times were set in the offseason. Major League ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-16-2016

Arizona Republican, August 16, 1916:

Babe Ruth came out the victor in a 13-inning pitching duel with Walter Johnson today, the Boston Americans defeating Washington in the latter’s final appearance at Fenway Park this season, 1 to 0.

Add that to the list of early MLB games I’d give a significant body part to be able to watch: Babe Ruth and Walter Johnson trading zeroes for 13 innings.

Also in the news 100 years ago today: A fan sues the St. Louis Browns for $15,000, claiming he was wrongly ...

Dave Dombrowski will have a lot to process when it comes to judging John Farrell

When a team keeps underperforming expectations, the manager gets the blame. John Farrell should be on shaky ground.

Coco Crisp ‘hurt,’ believes A’s trying to prevent option

But now the A’s longest tenured player is upset and told The Chronicle he is convinced that the team is deliberately not using him in order to avoid having his $13 million vesting option for 2017 kick in.

“I’m extremely hurt, the way things are being handled,” said Crisp, who did not play in Monday’s 5-2 loss at Texas. “I’m not calling anyone names, but this is really frustrating and disappointing. This has been my favorite organization going back to when I was a kid, because of ...

Puma: Original Met Clarence ‘Choo Choo’ Coleman dead at 80

#RIPChooChoo

Coleman said he received the nickname “Choo Choo” in his youth because of his speed. Mets manager Casey Stengel would quip he had never seen a catcher so fast at retrieving passed balls.

Following his baseball career, Coleman helped run a Chinese restaurant in Newport News, Va. He was among the attendees at the Mets’ 50th anniversary celebration in 2012.

Jonathan Papelbon Subjected His Teammates To Terrible Pro-Trump Music

Whether you’re voting for Trump or not, we can all agree that Rodney Carrington songs are terrible.

The Nationals released Papelbon over the weekend, and that meant it was time for writers and reporters to dish some gossip. The Washington Post’s Dan Steinberg provided us with this gem:

Now maybe players don’t, or shouldn’t, care whether the home fans like them. If a Nationals player did care, though, he probably wouldn’t have wanted to wear a T-shirt reading “Obama can’t ban these ...

Still Pitching and Still Fascinating at 69 – The Hardball Times

As I mentioned in a previous post, one of the first players I ever interacted with was Bill Lee. The 8 year-old me idolized big leaguers, so having one smile, joke around, sign an autograph and spend a few minutes was the greatest thing ever. I stopped idolizing players a long time ago but childhood memories and feelings linger long after we grow up.

OTP 2016 August 15: Amarillo’s Politics Could Cost City a AA Baseball Team

Nelson presented a feasibility study to the Lubbock city council Thursday showing how bringing a major league affiliated baseball team to the city would benefit them not only culturally with downtown development but economically as well.

“Part of the project is to build a stadium with a minimum capacity of 6,000 seats. Nelson said. “Deterime the ideal site for that stadium. Determine the viability of sharing the stadium with the College Baseball Hall of Fame.

Exploring Statcast Data from Baseball Savant | Exploring Baseball Data with R

The future of batted ball data.

There seems to be active research of making sense of this type of data. For example, there is an interesting post by Rob Arthur at fivethirtyeight.com which looks at the relationship between launch angle, exit velocity and a linear weights measure of BIP value. There is a more recent article by Bill Petti on the Hardball Times. I agree with Rob Arthur that these findings are currently preliminary — we have a lot to learn about success in hitting balls in play.

Stephen Piscotty has improved arm strength | MLB.com

Great article.

And Piscotty? Well, we know exactly what he did, because MLB.com’s Cardinals beat reporter Jen Langosch pointed out way back in early April that improving arm strength was a focus of Piscotty’s last spring. As she wrote, Piscotty changed his throwing mechanics when new teammate Mike Leake “identified a flaw that was costing the outfielder some strength,” then worked with fellow outfielder Randal Grichuk on improving his arm action. Two days into the season, Piscotty showed off his ...

Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton likely out for year | MLB.com

Really bad news for the Marlins.

“It’s a Grade 3 strain of his groin,” Hill said. “We’re going to rehab it, and best-case scenario is a six-week return. Obviously, there is still opportunity for G to be back this season’s end. But obviously, it was a significant injury and we’ll see how rehab goes.”

Doctor Strangebat: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb!

Each day’s BP became his chance to let loose, masquerading as a warmup to get loose. He had a swing built for a longest-drive contest. He knew where the pitch was going to be, how fast it was going to arrive, and he wanted to see how far he could send it, picking distant spots out at each ballpark. If there was water out yonder, all the better. He would let fly to see how far it flew. And then, during a BP session at Class ...

Marlins’ Stanton, Conley heading for DL stints | MLB.com

The Marlins suffered a costly 8-7 loss to the White Sox on Saturday night, as right fielder Giancarlo Stanton (groin) and left-hander Adam Conley (hand) sustained injuries that will put them on the disabled list.

Stanton was injured on the final play of the game, attempting to stretch a single to a double. Conley, who started and gave up five runs in four innings, revealed postgame that he has been dealing with a hand injury.

Despite a lineup that has become populated by rookies and other youngsters, an identity has emerged amid the infield dirt.

Boston’s senior baseball analyst was asked to compare Theo Epstein, Ben Cherington and Dave Dombrowski, all of whom he’s worked for as a member of the Red Sox front office. His response (edited here for concision) was as follows:

“Theo was very analytical,” said Tippett. “Very creative, always ...

Bannister saw benefits of PITCHF/x system early on - Sports - providencejournal.com - Providence, RI

Most scientists conduct their experiments in the seclusion of their labs, far away from eyes that might judge their work before they’ve reached conclusions. Back in 2008, when they were pitching together with the Kansas City Royals, Brian Bannister and Zack Greinke conducted their experiments in front of more than 37,000 people.

Bannister and Greinke had come across early data on pitch velocity and movement generated by a camera system mounted at major-league stadiums, a system now widely ...
