Rays agree to deal with All-Star catcher Wilson Ramos, pending physical | Tampa Bay Times

The Rays made a surprising strike to land a potential major impact player, agreeing late Tuesday on a two-year deal with All-Star catcher Wilson Ramos, who will be sidelined until midseason while recovering from major right knee surgery.

The deal, for a guaranteed $12.5 million with another $5.75 million in incentives, is pending a physical and won’t be finalized for a few days.

Ramos, 29, is not expected to play in the majors until June or July as the former National had surgery Oct. 14 to ...

Orioles quietly embark on search for a veteran catcher - Baltimore Sun

“We have a good left-handed hitting prospect in Chance Sisco,’’ Duquette said. “A lot of clubs would like to have Chance Sisco and we’re glad we have him. I’m not sure he’s going to be ready to start the season. We have some other depth behind him, but I would like to see us add another catcher to our club ... another veteran catcher.”

Though Duquette seemed to leave open the possibility that Sisco might be ready at some point next season, that seems unlikely, and he said later that a two-year ...

Yankees To Retire Derek Jeter’s Number On May 14

The ultimate honor:

Derek Jeter’s No. 2 is being retired, the last of the New York Yankees’ single digits. The Yankees said Tuesday the number will be retired on May 14 before a Mother’s Day game against Houston, and a plaque in his honor will be unveiled in Monument Park during the ceremony.

Jeter’s number is the 21st retired by the team. He won five World Series titles and was a 14-time All-Star during a 20-season career that ended in 2014 and he is sixth in career hits with 3,465. Jeter set ...

Brian Dozier makes most of power by pulling | MLB.com

Wherever Dozier ends up, he’s not going to be the strongest player in the lineup. But he may just be the hitter who has learned how to maximise the power he does have more efficiently than most others. It’s good to hit the ball in the air. It’s a lot better to find the parts of the park that are much more conducive to the distance you have. That’s how Dozier become a slugger—and that’s why he’s so valuable.

DRUNK HISTORY WILL EXPLORE DISCO DEMOLITION NIGHT

Tonight’s episode of Comedy Central’s Drunk History is going to look at one of the more infamous promotions in MLB history. Disco Demolition Night at the old Comiskey Park in Chicago happened on July 12, 1979 and was the brainchild of DJ Steve Dahl and the Chicago White Sox’s promotions director Mike Veeck. It happened in between the doubleheader between the White Sox and the Detroit Tigers when a bunch of disco records were blown up on the field.

It led to a bunch of fans emptying the ...

A record $1 billion bet on MLB in 2016

Putting Pete Rose in the pre-game studio is paying off.

Through October, $1.0 billion was bet on baseball at Nevada’s regulated sportsbooks, an all-time record, according to gaming control, and nearly double the amount that was bet in 2010. By comparison, $1.6 billion was bet on football (NFL and college) in 2015.

At a time when more money is being bet on baseball than ever before, Major League Baseball is taking a new approach to how it keeps track of the betting on its games.

A two-hour ...

Heyman: Yankees Remain Focused On Aroldis Chapman

Though it isn’t known exactly where the team stands, the New York Yankees remain focused on bringing back closer Aroldis Chapman, with ex-Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen their primary backup plan.

While Chapman is reportedly looking for a six-year deal, the Yankees won’t go that far; they are, however, prepared to give Chapman a deal in the range of five years and $80 million, which would break the record for relievers just set by Mark Melancon, who received a four-year, $62 million deal from ...

Mets prospects on the table as they mull 3 roads to reliever | New York Post

While the most obvious approach might be to hit the free-agent market for a dependable reliever, the club also is exploring two primary trade routes, according to industry sources.

One involves trading Jay Bruce or Curtis Granderson — a source confirmed reports Monday the Mets have interest in Orioles reliever Brad Brach — and the other centers on using “second-tier” prospects such as Gavin Cecchini and Brandon Nimmo for bullpen help.

As much as the Mets like Brach, who was an ...

Washington Herald, December 6, 1916:

Rules governing the world’s series soon will be revised by the National Commission, backed by the rival major leagues. Several important suggestions will be considered. They include a reduction of admission fees, an increase of the games to nine instead of seven, a curtailment of the players’ share of the money and a plan to give a cash bonus to every player in each circuit, tailenders to receive the smallest sums.

Rockies GM Jeff Bridich eyes first basemen | MLB.com

This makes a lot of sense for the Rockies.

General manager Jeff Bridich said the Rockies are considering the heavy price tag for free-agent first basemen Mark Trumbo and Edwin Encarnacion. Additionally, multiple Major League sources said there have been preliminary talks about White Sox slugger Jose Abreu as the Rockies attempt to boost run production at the position.

Nationals Taken Aback by Bryce Harper Contract Demands

I can’t imagine that Bryce is a great singer so it’s no surprise that they balked at this record deal.

Harper, according to the executive, is asking for a record deal that will exceed 10 years in length, and likely pay him in excess of $400 million.

Agent Scott Boras says the only active negotiations of late have involved a one-year deal in 2017. Harper, who made $5 million last season, is eligible for salary arbitration, and Boras seemed mystified by the Nationals’ stance.

Neyer: Today’s game! Catch it!

Neyer submitted this piece prior to Sunday’s announcement.

Davey Johnson and Lou Piniella have their cases, too.

Are there standards for managers? I suppose you could look at career wins, winning percentage, and postseason appearances and cobble together some sort of formula. But if you just eyeball those lists, it’s pretty clear that 2,000 wins or three World Championships gets you in. Piniella’s got just one of the latter, and only 1,835 of the former. Plus, his .517 career winning ...

Five reasons Texas Rangers could say no to Edwin Encarnacion | The Star-Telegram

So here’s a look at five reasons the Rangers could pass on Encarnacion:

▪ The Rangers don’t want to block Gallo’s path to the majors. They need to find out about him, and soon.

▪ The club doesn’t want to give up on him as it did Davis and miss out on all that power. Who is the only player in the majors the past five seasons with more homers than Encarnacion? Davis.

▪ So, Encarnacion has that kind of power, maybe a tad bit less, at 34. With a bunch of 30-somethings already on ...

New CBA, qualifying offers could impact Royals | MLB.com

Yes, they can. I’m getting really tired of seeing this meme everywhere. The Royals planting this story doesn’t make it true. Let me explain: No, the Royals probably can’t afford to pay $90M to 5 players next year. But that’s not what will happen. What will happen is 5 different players will each separately make a decision on whether to accept a 1 year, ...

OTP: 5 December 2016: Baseball’s New Collective Bargaining Agreement

OTP articles are traditionally whimsical, but not much whimsy is abroad these days.  Since labor relations are always political, here’s an actual baseball-news item for a change:

Word broke late last week of a new five-year CBA as a deadline fast approached. The luxury-tax threshold — officially called the Competitive Balance Tax — and tougher rules surrounding it quickly emerged as a central theme.

Despite those enhanced rules, what’s glaringly evident is that MLB no longer sees the ...

The Royals are in a bind and will have to do something about it soon | FOX Sports

I can’t see how they wouldn’t be able to afford the draft picks. Each player they’d be losing makes more than the draft slot will be. I would think they’d also be tempted to make one last run.

In theory, the Royals could carry all of their potential free agents through ‘17, make each a qualifying offer and collect draft picks following the first round for every one who signs a contract above $50 million — a new stipulation under the collective-bargaining agreement.

Realistically, a ...

Diamondbacks bring framing into focus with catching switch - SweetSpot- ESPN

“His defense has always been his calling card,” one major-league scout said. “His hands are excellent. His arm strength and accuracy are above average. He blocks pitches in the dirt well. He handles pitching staffs well and fulfills the pitching coach’s game plans ideally.”

The numbers back that up. Over the past nine seasons, Mathis ranks fifth among catchers in defensive runs saved. And on a per-inning basis, he rates batter than the leader—Yadier Molina.
