The Apprenticeship of Connie Mack – The Hardball Times

I have to wonder how the six-year-olds today look at Mack’s statue when they attend Phillies games. Here stands a man born during the Civil War, whose playing career spanned the Gilded Age and the Gay ’90s, and whose managerial career started in 1894 and carried through the first half of the 20th century. Still, it’s been more than six decades since the A’s left for Kansas City, so small fry today would likely be unimpressed by the statute of the gaunt old man waving his scorecard. I ...

MLB, Fox break impasse in streaming talks - local streaming to come

Welcome to the 21st century.

Several industry sources said the league is drafting deal documents with Fox, which holds the local media rights to 15 MLB teams. An agreement to offer authenticated local streaming of live games is expected to be in place by the start of the 2016 season.

It was a significant shift in MLB’s negotiating position that led to the breakthrough with Fox, which has been in active negotiations with the league for several years over the streaming service. The Toronto ...

Braun ties Yount’s team record for home runs

ryan braun tied robin yount’s franchise record with his 251st home run.  pretty low bar to clear in terms of career homers for a team.

braun’s remarks:

“It’s definitely a special accomplishment, something to be proud of,” said Braun, whose four career homers against Harang are tied for his highest total against any pitcher.

“Robin’s obviously the greatest player in franchise history. Played here for 20 years, accomplished so many amazing things, so anytime you are mentioned alongside his ...

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, August 17, 1915:

Bubble fountains, with pure, clear, sparkling water, are to replace the time-honored soda pop at the Cardinals’ park. This announcement [yesterday] by President Schuyler Britton follows close on the heels of yesterday’s game when some 200 bleacherites shied a multitude of pop bottles at Lord Byron, the singing umpire.
...
“Put a ban on soda pop sales,” [Britton] explains, “and no bottles will be thrown for the simple reason that there will be no bottles ...

Sale Strikes Out 15 as White Sox Beat Cubs 3-1 - The New York Times

It’s like a little league game.

Sale matched a career high with 15 strikeouts while pitching seven scoreless innings, and the White Sox snapped the crosstown Cubs’ nine-game win streak with a 3-1 victory on Sunday.

Cardinals induct four into Cardinal Hall Of Fame

From a historical standpoint, Simmons said there were really only four franchises _ Brooklyn/Los Angeles, New York/San Francisco Giants, the New York Yankees and the Cardinals.

“They’ve got all the Hall of Famers and all the pennants. Those four places are huge,” Simmons.

“When one of them, in this case, the Cardinals, embraces you, brings you forward and lifts you up, along with their fan base, which says, ‘We really think there’s something special about you’. . . it was a little surprising ...

Kyle Schwarber avoids beer can, delivers big hit for Chicago Cubs - Chicago Cubs Blog - ESPN

Somebody picked a weird time to give up drinking.

Schwarber got a taste—almost literally—of the Cubs/Sox rivalry when a fan threw a beer can at him during the Cubs’ 6-3 win on Saturday, their ninth consecutive victory.

“A tallboy,” Schwarber said, laughing afterwards. “And it wasn’t even drunk all the way.

Boston Red Sox turn to Matt Barnes in pitching rotation - Boston Red Sox Blog - ESPN

Matt Barnes is not a major league starter without some big changes to his repertoire. Unfortunately for me, he’s scheduled to start on Monday, when I have tickets. It looks like my personal Red Sox losing streak is about to get a new record.

With Steven Wright going on the seven-day concussion DL after being struck with a batting practice fly ball earlier in the week, Boston Red Sox interim manager Torey Lovullo announced that right-hander Matt Barnes will take Wright’s turn in the rotation on ...

efore revealing his secret to teammates, Denson figured it was time to finally tell his family, and did so in the spring. First, he told his sister, Celestine, a professional dancer married to former Brewers farmhand Jose Sermo.

“She said, ‘I’ve known since you were little,’” said Denson. “I said, ‘How did you know?’ She said, ‘You’re my little brother. I’m around you all the time.’”

Royals magical 2014 postseason is leading to baby boom in Kansas City

Much has been written about the romance of a baseball game: The perfectly green grass like spring in bloom, the highly charged one-on-one battles between pitcher and batter, the foul lines like ley lines laid down by Eros himself.

For Royals fans, this has led to at least one hospital setting a record this July for most babies born in a month with 473—this coming exactly nine months after Royals’ magical World Series run. These newborns even carry reminders of Kansas City’s first postseason ...

Astros’ George Springer cleared for baseball activities - Ultimate Astros

It seems like Springer last played in another season.

Astros right fielder George Springer, who has been out since suffering a fractured right wrist July 1, was cleared to resume some baseball activities Friday morning.

“I didn’t really know what to do, to be honest with you,” Springer said. “I prepared myself for no and yes. I got told yes and it was just kind of a relief. It’s obviously been hard these last six weeks to not be able to play out there with these guys. I’m almost ...
