Robothal: Old Hoss Epstein?

Consider an incident that occurred Thursday night, when Epstein threw out the first pitch at the home opener of the Cubs’ new affiliate in South Bend, Ind.

As this video clearly suggests, Epstein threw at Cubs’ mascot Clark the Cub.

“Clark and I have a love-hate relationship,” Epstein said. “He got a little upset at a prank I pulled a couple of spring trainings ago and has been a little distant since. “I tried to brush him back — at least move his feet with a two-seamer in off ...

Robothal: Phillies need to get real if they want to deal Hamels to Red Sox

OK, can the Phillies stop asking the Red Sox about center fielder Mookie Betts and catcher Blake Swihart now?

So, is it over? Will the Phillies simply turn their attention to teams other than the Red Sox when trying to move Hamels? Or might the Phils come to their senses and target the next layer of prospects in the Sox’s bountiful farm system?

I would imagine that the Sox’s view of the Phillies’ stance can be summed up in two words: “Their problem.”

Keri: Suit Up: How MLB Mentors Pay It Forward, One Lesson (and Shopping Spree) at a Time

“We’re all in the team hotel, and Trevor Hoffman spreads the word to all the rookie call-ups, ‘Meet me downstairs at noon!’” Axford said. “We were in Chicago, I hadn’t even pitched in my first game yet. And then here we all are at Macy’s on the seventh floor. We get there and Hoffman just says, ‘OK, go get yourselves suited.’”

Hoffman can’t point to a specific suit-buying role model the way Hawkins can with Puckett, but Hoffman was nonetheless happy to carry on the ...

Derek Holland could miss two months with shoulder injury

The last thing the Texas Rangers needed was another injury in their starting rotation. Unfortunately, that’s exactly the hand they were dealt on Friday when left-hander Derek Holland exited the home opener against the Houston Astros with tightness in his left shoulder.

The diagnosis: A subscapular strain, which according to the Rangers means that Holland will be shut down completely for the next 4-6 weeks and may not be available again until late June or early July.

Jimmy Fallon avoids foul ball, chugs beer at Yankees’ game

Given that they play in New York, the Yankees tend to draw a fair amount of celebrity fans. That was the case Thursday, as “The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon sat in the first row as the Yankees took on the Toronto Blue Jays.

In the seventh inning, Fallon can be seen avoiding a foul ball off the bat of Jacoby Ellsbury. Fallon loses his Yankees’ cap during the commotion. Following the play, Fallon took an opportunity to bow to the fans in the stadium. He then took a sip of his beer, toasting ...

Arte Moreno won’t promise Josh Hamilton will play again for Angels

Angels owner Arte Moreno said Friday he might try to enforce contractual language he says protects the team from a substance-abuse relapse by outfielder Josh Hamilton.

The owner also would not say that Hamilton would play another game for the Angels.

“I will not say that,” Moreno said.

An arbitrator ruled last week that Hamilton, who reported the relapse, had not violated baseball’s drug policy and thus could not be suspended. Angels President John Carpino said it “defies logic” that ...

MLB, union prohibit players from daily fantasy games

Who should I start this week, Joe Jackson or Pete Rose?

Major League Baseball and the players’ association have agreed to a deal that forbids players from playing in daily fantasy baseball games that involve a prize, but still allows them to endorse these companies.

Earlier this week, at the IMG World Congress in California, commissioner Rob Manfred said that although he considered daily fantasy different from gambling, playing fantasy for prizes became part of Rule 21, which prohibits ...

Q&A With “Growing Up Pedro” Author Matt Tavares

In your readings, what have you found that resonates most with kids?

Tavares: I’ve been sharing the book quite a bit a schools and store events, and kids seem pretty fascinated with Pedro’s childhood. I think the fact that Pedro was so small makes kids automatically relate to him. In the opening scene of Growing Up Pedro, Pedro is upset because he wants to play ball with the older boys, but his big brother, Ramon, tells him it’s too dangerous because they’re using a hard ball. Kids really ...

Roll Call: Nursing Lounge Coming to Nationals Park?

Stella Baines: “Oh, that’s Joey. He cries when we take him out so we just leave him in there.” :)

Responding to a change.org petition started by an Arlington woman, a spokesperson for the Washington Nationals said there are plans to open a “state-of-the-art space to accommodate nursing mothers” at Nationals Park this July, in time for the All-Star break. Women currently have the option to use a designated conference room, but there is no view of the game from it, and the petition complained ...

What Have New Pace Rules Meant for Troy Tulowitzki?

According to the rule, Tulowitzki isn’t violating anything. He kept a foot in the box, which is basically it. But that didn’t stop him from going through his full and familiar routine… So the rule really doesn’t address this sort of behavior. Maybe you’ll shave off a second or two, but frequently, players would go through their idiosyncrasies while they wandered away from the box. Now they’ll just do them in the box. The rule essentially forces catchers and umpires to watch batters ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-10-2015

Pittsburgh Press, April 10, 1915:

War, politics and spring fashions were relegated to the background today while some 72 athletes in four cities started a 154 days’ battle of their own. The umpires took the indicators away from the judges and summonses gave way to batting lists, the Federal league formally opening its 1915 baseball season.

I had no idea Federal League teams had 18-man rosters. That seems ridiculously small.

Angels Notes: Garrett Richards moves closer to return - The Orange County Register

Good news for Angels fans.

Manager Mike Scioscia had said last week that the plan for Richards after Thursday’s game would be a regular season minor league game on Tuesday. If he pitches for Triple-A Salt Lake City, they are at Fresno on Tuesday.

After that, Richards could be ready to rejoin the Angels rotation. If he does, he would be eight months removed from knee surgery, which had an expected rehab time of six to nine months.

The Astrodome’s 50th Birthday party was supposed to wrap up by 8 p.m. Thursday, but so many people wanted to take a peek inside the Dome the county left the gates open until 8:15.

By 10 p.m., people were still waiting as the lines were still wrapped around the Dome as people waited to get inside.

People came from far and wide to see the Eighth Wonder of the World. Organizers say approximately 23,000 people turned out.

Dodgers acquire reliever Ryan Webb

The Dodgers also got Ward and a competitive-balance draft pick, No. 74 overall, in exchange for pitcher Ben Rowen and catcher Chris O’Brien. That pick, which falls between the second and third rounds, has a slot value of $827,000, according to Baseball America.

So it looks like the Orioles gave up the 74th pick so they could save $2.75m on Webb’s salary. Rowen was a pre-arb player released by the Rangers in December. O’Brien’s upside is a potential future third string catcher. Brian Ward ...

Joe Nathan placed on DL with a strained right elbow

On Wednesday, general manager Dave Dombrowki announced that Nathan is headed to the disabled list with a right elbow flexor strain.

Nathan faced one batter in Monday’s 4-0 victory against the Minnesota Twins, striking out former teammate Torii Hunter to earn the save. But that might prove to be a costly save. On his final pitch, Nathan first felt discomfort, and according to manager Brad Ausmus it was determined on Wednesday that Nathan will require rest before being reevaluated later in the ...

Rangers’ second baseman Rougned Odor plays the role of the willing participant during the workout. Odor is listed at 190 pounds, according to Baseball-Reference.com. Personally, we think Fielder can handle more than that, but he doesn’t have to prove anything to us.

Of course, the special ...

If you aren’t the type who brings a glove to the game, you’re going to come away with a sore hand or two. Well, unless you’re this inventive Mariners fan.

This fan ... no, this hero ... finds a way to make it work. He didn’t bring his glove to the game because he’s not 12, but he still gets the job done in the Mariners’ 2-0 loss to the Angels on Tuesday night. Neyer: Russell tussles with knuckles

Last season, Dickey had a personal catcher: Josh Thole. And it wasn’t just last season. First with the Mets and then the Blue Jays, Thole backstopped Dickey’s butterflies for five seasons.

This season, Josh Thole’s in the minor leagues, at least until the Jays trade Dioner Navarro. So Wednesday night, Russell Martin got the start behind the plate.

I got to wondering about the relative importance of framing knuckleballs, and asked our friends at Baseball Info Solutions to look at some numbers. ...Read More...

Calcaterra: A’s rookie Mark Canha did the “Bull Durham” cliche thing after his debut

Whaddaya know? Meat wrote it down.

This morning in the recaps I noted that I had never heard of A’s rookie Mark Canha. Now I am certain to never, ever forget him, because he is an instant legend.

No, not because he went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI in his debut (though that’s awesome) but because he dropped the “Bull Durham” “Good Lord Willin’ . . .” cliche speech in the postgame interview, basically word for word.
