“He can’t pick up a ball until he’s completely pain-free and no fluid in the area,” manager Brad Ausmus said.
And until the soreness in his strained right triceps subsides, Ausmus said, he will be sidelined. There is no timetable for him to throw a ball again.
The fluid in the area, Ausmus explained, is inflammation, which was found by an MRI last week.
“My understanding is that it wasn’t fully recovered which is why it became sore again,” Ausmus said. “We have to have him completely free of ...

The Brittle Bunch wasn’t even an option?
The newest nicknamed bunch, the “Coors Shield,” plays in the dirt in LoDo. The name, nominated by a fan, Drew Baker, in an online poll at the fan website Purple Row, beat out two other finalists. The infielders, though, might not be ready for a nickname. They’re more focused on groundballs than on brand names.

Iwakuma informed club officials after his start last Monday that his shoulder felt “fatigued.” He then began taking anti-inflammatories in hopes of alleviating the problem prior to his scheduled Friday bullpen workout.
When Iwakuma reported the same symptoms in that workout, the Mariners moved quickly by placing him in the disabled list for what they characterized as a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle in his back.

Koji has not looked good. Fastball around 86 MPH. His splitter has looked good but he’s throwing it an unsustainable rate. Eventually teams will stop swinging at it, get ahead in the count, and tee off on his very hittable fastball.

I haven’t had much time to read so I am still working on this book. It’s excellent and very well researched.
A fascinating tidbit from Mark Armour and Dan Levitt’s excellent book In Pursuit of Pennants.
In October 1962, the St. Louis Cardinals hired 80-year-old Branch Rickey as a consultant. One of Rickey’s first recommendations was that 41-year-old Stan Musial, coming off a .330/.416/.508 season, should retire. His advice wasn’t taken. Stan the Man returned for a final season and hit ...

His absence had a very different cause than Harvey’s, and his best years are long past. But when A-Rod steps into the box against the new king of New York baseball, we will see two men, born elite and gifted at creating buzz, competing for the first time. It will be riveting.

This sounds workable.
Sources said Friday evening that the Angels and Rangers had yet to agree on all terms of the deal, meaning it could be several days before the full matter is resolved. But under the deal’s general parameters as of Friday, the Rangers will not send any players to the Angels, and the Rangers will take on less than $15 million in financial obligations to Hamilton. He is owed $83 million over the 2015, 2016 and 2017 seasons.
One key element of the trade is that Hamilton will ...

I am not a fan of Casey McGehee, who only has 42 plate appearances. The Giants will give him more time, though, as they should.
1. How long will Bochy go with Casey McGehee when Matt Duffy is raring to go on the bench?
You know the Bochy/Giants drill by now. McGehee was targeted in trade to be the third baseman. The front office wanted him for a reason, and they certainly are not make a statement against McGehee by benching him one-eighth of the way through te season.
There is a pecking order ...

No info in the article about how this will be accomplished.
Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton, who in February admitted to relapsing and abusing drugs and alcohol, may never play for Los Angeles again and could be gone from the team in a matter of days, according to an industry source.

Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, a native of Santa Clara, Cuba, become a U.S. citizen Friday and was the keynote speaker during the ceremony for 140 other South Florida residents.
“This is a dream that I’ve had since I was little, and actually achieving it is really amazing,” Fernandez said. “Having my family here and so much support from this amazing country, it’s really fantastic.”
The Marlins presented Fernandez with an American flag that had flown over the team’s stadium….

I don’t know how whether this is very odd or not but I noticed Andrew Miller has yet to face a lefty batter in the seven games that he’s pitched. 29 plate appearances, all against right-handed batters. Even without facing a lefty, he’s been dominant. .

Syndicated columnist Hugh Fullerton in the Milwaukee Journal, April 24, 1915:
Here is Ty Cobb’s newest play—and his most daring one.
Cobb is on first when the ball was bunted. The throw is made to second, but Cobb beats it and, without stopping, starts for third. The batter meantime turns first. Cobb reaches third by a narrow squeak and the batter lands in safety on second.
Every time Cobb has tried it so far this year—it was quite a part of the training trip—he has been put out by a foot or ...
When wasn’t he right?

The Dodgers need to find a way to ride out Guerrero’s hot streak, even if the thought irritates Mattingly.
Asked if he considered making Guerrero the starting third baseman and Uribe his late-inning defensive replacement, Mattingly mentioned Turner again.
“Where does J.T. fit in your plan?” Mattingly snapped. “Does he not play? Should he not start and then somebody come in for him? I know the people are chanting for Alex right now, but there’s other guys too that probably have swung the ...

Before and after throwing out a ceremonial first pitch, with gusto, on Thursday, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn chatted with team president Brian Auld and other Rays officials.
That level of banter is about all they can do for now, at least until St. Petersburg and the Rays work out a deal for them to discuss stadium sites on the other side of the bridges. Those talks are on hold, likely until after the season, after the St. Pete City Council rejected the last proposal.
“We still are willing to ...

Seats with touchscreen monitors? Sorry but what is this guy smoking? There is barely room (and sometimes no room) for cup holders. With smartphones, why would you even need a monitor?
Nor does NYU sports business professor Robert Boland. But he can envision seats with touchscreen monitors being installed, giving spectators access to the producer’s feed from the truck along with more statistics and maybe even bringing gambling to the stands.
“Or some sort of interactive community where (you can ...
