Dodgers CEO Stan Kasten knows not to rush to judgment after trading deadline - The Orange County Register

Some trade deadline perspective from Stan Kasten, a guy who has been around forever.

“Every stock that has ever been sold in the history of the world has been sold by someone who thought it was going down to someone who thought it was going up,” Dodgers team president and CEO Stan Kasten said. “It’s always a function of an intersection of needs and plans.”

OTP - August 2015: Meet the … Baseball Owner Funding the 2016 Campaign ...

Scott Walker’s Super PAC “Unintimidated” raked in the biggest donation from a sports-associated contributor. The Ricketts family — the owners of the Chicago Cubs baseball team — tossed $5 million dollars to the Super PAC backing the Wisconsin governor. Joe gave $100,000, his wife Marlene gave $4.9 million in contributions and their son Todd gave almost $2,500. According to Forbes, the family is worth nearly $4.5 billion.

Just when I was beginning to like the Cubs again :)

Having the AL’s worst record could benefit Red Sox - Sports - The Boston Globe

Funny. Sonny Gray is the kind of player Beane holds onto.

Take Sonny Gray. If the A’s decide to expose him to revocable waivers, the Sox would have the first crack at claiming him so long as they have either the worst record in the AL or the worst record for any team besides the A’s. If the Sox do claim him, they would then have about two days to discuss what kind of return it would take for Oakland to consider moving the righthander – laying a framework for further discussions in the ...

Grant: Jeff Banister on why he pulled Martin Perez, went with bullpen with AL’s highest ERA in close game | Dallas Morning News

Jeff Banister discusses his thoughts on pulling Martin Perez.

What Banister was witnessing was a bit different. Banister subscribes to the theory that not all pitches are the same. Pitches in the first aren’t thrown with as much stress as pitches in the seventh and later. Pitches in the ninth of a close game against an elite team, when facing the lineup the fourth time through, are ramped in stress level significantly.

When Banister saw a changeup that stayed up and over the plate to Angel ...

Kaiser Carlile, 9-Year-Old Bat Boy, Dies After Being Struck by Player’s Swing

Just awful news…

A 9-year-old bat boy died Sunday evening after getting hit in the head as a baseball player took practice swings in Kansas, his team said.

“With the permission of the family, and with much sorrow and a very broken heart, I regretfully inform everyone that Kaiser Carlile passed away earlier this evening,” the Liberal Bee Jays, an amateur baseball team, announced on Facebook….

A witness told NBC affiliate KSNW that the boy was running to bring back a bat after an out when he ...

Yordano Ventura calls Jose Bautista a “nobody” and accuses him of stealing signs | HardballTalk

Yordano Ventura might be a little volatile.

Yordano Ventura, who was in the middle of the beefing after the benches cleared, had his own words for Bautista. They were also on Twitter but were since deleted. Jeff Passan of Yahoo, however, describes them here:

In those tweets, according to two people who read and translated them, Ventura said to Bautista: “We’ll meet again later and if you do that with me, you’ll see what I’m about. I don’t care about anybody. I used to respect you, but ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-3-2015

Pittsburgh Press, August 3, 1915:

The report issuing from Chicago to the effect that the White Sox had offered several players and $20,000 for the sale of Outfielder Joe Jackson was denied by Vice President Barnard of the Cleveland American league club.

“No one here has ever had the temerity to suggest the sale of Jackson to any club nor has any club made a recent bid for his services,” said Barnard.

Suuuuuuure, Ernest. Sure. And I bet there’s no chance Jackson is playing for the White Sox by ...

Edward Fitzpatrick: With opposition on right and left, will Providence ballpark be out at home?

Larry Lucchino’s new project is trying to screw over the taxpayers in Rhode Island.  His biggest cheerleader is House speaker, Nicholas A. Mattiello. Mattiello is trying to paint the opposition as extremists. Although some of them might be, all it takes is a little knowledge about how these deals work to oppose any deal which transfers taxpayer money into the pockets of owners, who are already making a ton of money.

“The extreme right and the extreme left are opposed to this,” Mattiello said ...

‘He was crying like a baby’: Tempers flare as Royals lose to Blue Jays 5-2 | The Kansas City Star

I guess there is a lot of crying in baseball.

In the aftermath, Royals veteran Edinson Volquez sneered at the behavior of All-Star third baseman Josh Donaldson. After Volquez hit Donaldson in the first inning, Donaldson twice reacted with demonstrative anger when Kansas City pitchers continued to pitch inside.

“He’s a little baby,” Volquez said. “He was crying like a baby.”

The sentiment spread through the visitors’ clubhouse, as members of the Royals pitching staff decried ...

In losing Baseball Hall of Fame vote, timing the only bad thing - Chicago Tribune

This guy is so out of touch he doesn’t even know the years of eligibility has changed to ten years.

That move will delight the anonymous Twitter trolls who have hectored me every year to give up my vote because they apparently are upset that I roundly dismiss the candidacies of players like Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, whose use of PEDs was apparent, admitted or both.

My only regret in losing the vote now is not having a further voice in shutting that crowd out of ...

THE CRAZIEST BASEBALL PLAYER COMMERCIALS OF ALL TIME, RATED

Description: Pete Rose plays baseball against children in some sort of post-apocalyptic wasteland/acid trip. The Cincinnati Reds still exist in this world, as the oldest baseball team will also be the longest-lasting. When Rose hits a long fly to center, the Kool-Aid man destroys the center field wall to get him out. Even in this world of psychedelic baseball, Rose is shocked.

Zack Wheeler: Why I made the call to Sandy Alderson asking to stay a Met | Newsday

Sandy Alderson has a beating heart.

Yet Alderson admitted the conversation “actually had quite an impact.” In all of his years in baseball, the general manager said he had never seen a player in Wheeler’s position take the unusual step of calling.

“Again, if you go back to Wednesday and even this conversation, we’re talking about human beings,” Alderson said. “We all develop an attachment to each other and whatever capacity we serve, so it’s hard.”

A.J. Burnett injured, might be done pitching | MLB.com

Placed on the disabled list following a Thursday night outing when the pain in his right elbow became “a little more than I expected, and more than I could tolerate,” Burnett has an appointment with Pirates team doctors on Monday in Pittsburgh. He expects the diagnosis to be one of two things.

“It’s either [the ulnar ligament],” said Burnett, who had the requisite Tommy John surgery for that in 2003, “or the flexor [tendon]. I’m prepared for both. Either way, I’m not going to be bothered by ...

Nick Cafardo | Sunday Baseball Notes: Assessing the go-getters and do-nothings of the trade deadline - Sports - The Boston Globe

Cafardo is another writer I’m glad isn’t in charge of the Red Sox. Like most fans, he’s 100% rooted in the now, long-term planning and fair deals be damned.

Hamels would have solved the Red Sox’ problems immediately, and given the five-prospect package the Rangers used to land him, the Sox could easily have made a similar deal.

The Red Sox also didn’t obtain a controllable starter, such as Tyson Ross or Carlos Carrasco. They’re both good pitchers, but the Red Sox must pick up an ace. And ...

Larry Lucchino to step down as Red Sox chief executive at end of season - Sports - The Boston Globe

At least Dan Shaughnessy won’t lose the one front office guy who might like him.

Lucchino, meanwhile, remains an equity partner of the Sox ballclub and expects to remain a part of the front office in a different role.

The Sox do not yet have the framework of a new deal with Lucchino, officials said. They have had discussions with him about assuming a different role that moves beyond his current involvement in day-to-day operational details to broader strategic conversations, both with the Red ...

MLB trade deadline losers | FOX Sports

Last winter’s genius is this summer’s dummy, at least according to Ken Rosenthal.

Ken Rosenthal has been a favorite on this site for a long time. His reporting skills are fantastic. He also seems like a very nice guy, a nice guy who would be great to watch a game with at the pub or at the ball park. Like a lot of reporters, however, I’m not particularly enamored with his analysis. Although I like his reporting on my favorite team, I wouldn’t want the Red Sox following his suggestions. Neither ...

Injury to Burnett forced the Pirates’ hand to add pitcher | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

I hope Burnett can come back. He’s been a great story this year.

The addition of Happ, 32, whose first name is pronounced “Jay,” resulted directly from right elbow inflammation that sent A.J. Burnett to the 15-day disabled list Friday. Burnett made the All-Star team because of a 2.11 first-half ERA and 100 strikeouts in 119⅓ innings. In three starts since, he has allowed 32 hits and 18 earned runs in 16 innings. Huntington said Burnett informed the team of elbow pain after his start ...

Diamondbacks GM Dave Stewart: Padres asked for Paul Goldschmidt in trade

If this is true, it’s really a stupid way to conduct business. It’s a complete waste of time. Such an offer is predicated on the stupidity of the other guy. It’s insulting and counterproductive.

On the radio, he said the Diamondbacks “did not get a very positive response” from the Padres in their attempts to acquire Kimbrel, an All-Star closer. He was then asked if the Padres were reluctant to make a deal within the division.

“I don’t know if it was not wanting to trade in the division,” ...
